Chapter 382
Michelle Shioma was on the boat when the guns started popping off. With the screams about ghosts.
They had radioed back to the beach to ask, what the fuck they were talking about.
And the answer she got back was more freaking out, more panic and someone saying that the murdered men had come back for them.
That just raised more questions than answers.
But when more guns started to go off she figured that meant Five-0 and Wo Fat and his Rabbit had gotten out of that damn cage. And she was not going to deal with them. Steven McGarrett might not kill her out right, but Wo Fat and Sin Nombre would and she didn't not think that McGarrett had any control over either man.
She had argued with the men she had on her boat, they had wanted to go back to shore, but she was ordering them to leave. One of them, argued that he wasn't about to leave his men behind. That was a commendable thought. But it wasn't happening.
So she shot the man advocating for the return the hardest.
Mostly because he questioned her, and tried to boss her around. Like he had any authority over her.
Then the police helicopters showed up.
They were truly caught then. They all stood there, with their hands up as the helicopter hovered above them. And then the shots rang out.
Right away Michelle had ducked, but then turned, turned to the captain's box, were Rowan Pierce was standing, flanked by her two brothers. Both carrying guns.
How in the flying fuck had they gotten on the boat?
Her two brother's edged forward, pushing Rowan back behind them, but they were still out of sight of the helicopters circling above them. There was something weird about there appearance, not just that she had no idea how they did it.
She could have sworn that, behind them, wasn't the captain's box. Or the helm. It looked like a living room.
But that couldn't be right.
And she still had Wo Fat and Sin Nombre staring her down, with their wicked sister hiding behind them. She didn't know what she was going to do but she knew this wasn't good.
"I told you it would have been easier to just surrender to me, Shioma," Wo Fat called and she scowled at him. Why? She was in no hurry to die.
"There are cops everywhere," she snapped. "You can't kill me in front of all of these people."
Wo Fat actually looked around. But he didn't seem worried or afraid. He never seemed worried or afraid. It was like the man knew he was untouchable. Which was ridiculous. He was still very much a criminal, people just didn't want to deal with his sister and Five-0.
"You came after my family."
"And don't think that we didn't figure out that you were behind that dirty bomb. We know that you were going to plant it outside the Palace," Con added.
"I just said that she went after my family, didn't I?" Wo snapped to him.
"Oh, we're counting Steve now?"
"Well, we're kind of stuck with him since someone married him…"
"Boys!" Rowan cried and they both turned back to Shioma with their serious-business faces donned. Above them the helicopters were whirling but that wasn't going to mater, though they could see that she thought they'd be her saviour.
"They can't see us Shioma. They're not even going to know we were here," Wo said. "It'd be an easy way out, letting you get arrested, letting you rot and die in prison. But as long as you're alive you're going to be a threat…"
"And no one threatens our family," Con finished for him.
Then both of them opened fire.

Everyone was safe.
HPD showed up just in time, Duke had told him. Jerry had been worried that Steve would be mad at him, but Rowan and her two brothers had gone missing and he was not happy about that. So that had basically distracted him from being mad at Jerry.
Thank you, Rowan.
Jerry had made sure that everyone had got back okay, he made sure that they knew that the only reason he disobeyed a direct order was cause he was worried when they went no contact. He didn't want anything to happen to them, and Duke was certain that the people he could get to go with him were legit. And Jerry trusted Duke. Duke was ohana.
He was told again that Steve wasn't mad, that they were all grateful that he got the help that they desperately needed. He wasn't sure if he believed it.
Then Steve came back into the office on the phone arguing with whoever was on the other end about what they did and Jerry figured it would be a good time to bolt.
Cause he looked pissed.
He knew that Shioma had been found dead, and that Rowan and her brothers had been unaccounted for during that time. Jerry figured, if Steve was that mad, one of them had something to do with it and it meant that Steve was arguing with either Rowan or Wo Fat. And considering how mean he was getting he was going to guess it was Wo Fat.
He went down to his office to start on his end of the paperwork and when he was rounding his desk, he spotted something strange on it.
It was a badge.
Specifically a Five-0 badge.
It was just sitting their neatly as if waiting for him but he didn't know why it was there. He had been practically begging for the badge even before they brought him in as a special consultant, but Steve had never relented.
So why was it there? On his desk?
Was this a test?
Was he supposed to bring it upstairs and ask who it was who had lost their badge?
"Go ahead. Pick it up."
Jerry turned to the doorway where he found Chin standing there with that proud smile of his pointed right at Jerry.
"It's mine?" But Chin just continued to smile. "Does McGarrett know?"
Chin turned back to the door just as Steve walked in asking: "Does MCGarrett know?"
"About what?" Steve asked.
They had all changed since they had come back. Once Steve had determined a location on his wife and her two brothers. Both back home. Jerry wasn't sure how they did it, but Steve just seemed relieved so he figured he wasn't going to ask.
Chin was in a grey tee shirt and jeans. Steve was in a dark blue button up and black cargo pants.
Kono and Danny both came in too. Danny had changed, but his outfit was practically the same as when he left. Kono was in a black halter top and jeans.
Steve pointed to the shield on the desk and said: "Oh, yeah, yeah. Yeah, I know about it. You... uh… I mean you disobeyed a direct order, but you saved our lives, Jerry. It's been a long time coming, you deserve it."
Jerry said nothing. He couldn't find it in him to say anything, he was just so overwhelmed and over emotional. He picked up the shield and tired to pin it to himself, only to end up pricking himself instead.
"Here, let me help you, let me help you," Chin said stepping forward to do just that.
Chin got it pinned onto him and they all started clapping. Chin hugged him tightly and he just smiled. He couldn't believe that it had happened.
He finally had a badge.
He should have disobeyed a direct order from Steve months ago.

After celebrating with his team, Steve drove back to his house. He tried to have fun but his mind was still on his wife and how she just up and vanished with her brothers after she especially said she wouldn't. Then Michelle Shioma got shot in front of a helicopter filled with cops and though they didn't see who it was who did it, Steve knew who it was. He was worried that their investigation into what happened would turn up his wife or her brother's presence which could not be explained. But luckily they hadn't found anything yet, which meant her goddamn powers were definitely involved.
And he was not impressed.
He also shouldn't have been surprised.
He celebrated with his team and Jerry who had just gotten his badge, for as long as he could. But with all of that on his mind he just wasn't good company. So he had excused himself early and gone home.
He drove all the way back to try think of way to articulate what exactly he was mad about, but the more he thought about it the angrier she got.
So, he parked his truck beside her GTO, stormed up the driveway and into the house.
"Rowan Hazel Pierce!" he shouted after he slammed the door and his wife's head poked out from the kitchen doorway. "You are in so much trouble!"
"Me?"
"Oh, don't give me that!" he snapped storming towards her. "Are you out of your mind? Do you know what I'm going to have to do to explain what fucking happened today?!"
He got to the doorway that Rowan had backed out of, he pushed the door back open and immediately had Con in his face.
He hadn't even known that her brother was still there.
"Is that how you talk to her?" he snarled. "Really? You are literally the text book example of an abusive partner. You know that?"
"I am not!" Steve growled but Con refused to back down. "Why are you even here?"
"We were worried you'd yell at her for doing as we asked. And it seemed we were right to be worried," Wo Fat said from where he was standing, which was dapperly leaning against the stove with his arms crossed over his chest.
Great, so this was because he yelled at Wo Fat on the phone. He yelled at Wo Fat and they worried about Steve taking his anger out on Rowan.
"I'm not pissed you killed Shioma!" Steve snapped and when all three people in that kitchen cocked an eyebrow of disbelief at him he relented with: "Okay I am, but only because I don't know if you left DNA evidence, and if you did I don't know how I'm going to he explain that, but that is not why I'm pissed off!"
"Then why are you mad?" Rowan asked.
"I'm mad because you used your visions against me. And I don't just mean me, I mean all three of us."
Steve watched that realization land first on Con and then on Wo Fat and then the two men turned onto Rowan.
"Actually… yeah, you did, didn't you?" Con said. "You withheld information and sent us into a situation where you knew we'd get captured."
"I got all of that info after you left," Rowan said after blowing a raspberry at them and trying to wave it off.
"No, you fucking didn't," Steve snapped. "You said it yourself. You let us get captured to keep me contained and safe."
"Seriously, Rowan, what the actual fuck," Wo Fat asked and Rowan frowned.
"Right, so not my best choice, but… I unno… I was mad you guys were leaving me out! Like now that you've got Steve you don't need me anymore" she cried. "And… he's supposed to be on light duty! And you've never picked him over me before and… and…"
And then she started crying.
"Why are you crying?" Steve cried but Wo Fat and Con both his her with an aww and Wo Fat went to hug her.
"Dude!" Steve cried. "She is playing the both of you and you are letting it happen!"
Wo shot a glare back to him. "Your wife is crying!" he hissed.
Steve sighed heavily and leant back against his counters watching his two brothers-in-law fawn over their sister who he could tell right away wasn't really crying. Oh there were tears streaming down here cheeks, just not real one. Crocodile tears, that's what those were.
"I'm sorry," she cried into Wo's shoulder, while Con had a hand on her shoulder to comfort her. "I just figured it wouldn't be that bad. You guys would get captured and I'd intervene before you got hurt. I figure that's no different then using me as bait."
"Whoa!" Steve cried going from leaning to standing asap. "You used her as bait?!"
"I mean yeah," Wo said. "For you for starters."
Steve sighed heavily. "Okay, you know what," he said reaching in and tugging his wife out of Wo's arms and to his chest. "Go home."
"Why so you can yell are her some more?" Con snapped but Steve just glared at him.
"I'm not going to yell at her."
"You came into this house shouting and yelling…"
"Why are you guys arguing?" Nahele said and everyone jumped and turned to serving window where they could see their son standing on the stairs glaring at them with narrowed eyes. "Was dad yelling at mom again?"
Con turned to Steve. "Vindication!" he shouted pointing at him.
"Oh my god," Steve groaned. "Nahele, it's fine…"
"I can hear the lot of you through my headphones," he said.
"See, I told you, noise cancelling headphones…" Steve said but Rowan shook her head.
"That you want to buy with my money," she snapped. "Plus, what if we need to run, we be calling him and calling him and he can't hear us through the headphones. What happens then huh? He can barely hear us with regular headphones!"
"You argue with my sister so much that the kid needs noise cancelling headphones?" Wo Fat asked dryly.
"No, it's mostly cause they get loud when they're… you know… going at it," Nahele said and both Steve and Rowan winced as her two brothers stared at them.
"Gurl. Can you just not keep your hands off of him?"
"No!" Rowan cried. "I'm weak," she then took a hold of his shirt and lifted it up so they could see his chest and abs. "I mean look at this! He walks around shirtless all the time and I am weak!"
"Right, I'm going back upstairs," Nahele said turning away and pounding up the stairs. "I want pizza for dinner, one of ya'll better order my favourite!"
As soon as Nahele was back upstairs Wo Fat turned to his sister and said: "Use our codeword in the next sentence if you're being abused by him and you're afraid to leave."
Rowan narrowed her eyes at Wo Fat. "We don't have a codeword!"
"Right," he whispered. "We should have a codeword."
"Well not chicken salad, cause that's Steve and Danny's codeword."
"Really? Not very romantic," Con said and Steve rolled his eyes.
"Rowan and I yell when we argue, but that's just cause we're loud arguers. We all know that if I actually came at her she would void me so fucking fast and yes we do know that cause she doesn't use her powers against you two like she does to me!"
"It's true, I shocked him once, and he's hasn't held onto me when I said no, since," she said and Steve nodded.
Wo Fat's eyes narrowed as if trying to determine if Rowan was really okay or if he needed to intervene, and Steve knew he would if he had to.
"I'm fine, really," she said. "I promise."
His eyes stayed narrowed at her but eventually he said: "Alright, if you say so."
"Whoa, hold on, you're not gonna listen to her, are you?" Con asked. "He literally came through that door ready to fight."
"She says she's fine, so I believe her. Would you like to stay with me and Jian? We can go for noodles my treat," Wo said.
Food always had a way of making Con happy but it didn't work, not this time. Well not all the way, as he was still glaring at Wo Fat.
"Ask Ro for a loan, I'm gonna need a lot of food."
Wo sighed exasperatedly as Con went for the door. Usually Ro needed to be by the door the portal into it, but she was always opening portals in that particular doorway and she opened portals to Wo all the time, that and apparently she had been practicing opening portals form a distance.
Because of how often she did it in that doorway and to Wo in particular it was easier for her.
"Bye, sorry we didn't get to do our sibling day stuff," she said before leaning in to hug each boy. As she got to Wo, Steve heard her whisper: "I'll e-transfer you."
When the two men finally left and the door and portal was closed after them she turned to Steve and who was just glaring at her.
"What's going to happen if they find DNA evidence of you guys on that boat?"
"They can't, I made sure."
"So the void can wipe prints now?"
"No, but we shot from the other side of the portal. We never actually went onto the boat."
Oh wow, she really did take care of it. Onto problem number 2.
"I told you to stay put."
"I never listen to you."
Steve sighed. That was right, she didn't listen to him. Ever. She only listened to Wo Fat. Actually, today proved she didn't even listen to him. Neither he nor Wo had any control over his wife and that was frankly terrifying.
"You didn't think I'd maybe be worried?"
"No?" she said. "Steve, what could have happened? I mean really? You are a very skilled detective. You couldn't have reasoned that with the appearance of HPD I would void my brothers somewhere safe?"
"Fine!" he snapped. "Fine, yes, alright that is what I assumed, but you know, you know I don't like it when you're in situations where bullets are flying around, and levitating objects is a thing now. Why didn't you tell me you could do that?"
"Its uhm… it's a shield," she admitted and his heart stopped. "Pop a shield around the object and then toss it. Shields are becoming invisible now so yeah, I guess that's new."
New, she was still evolving. When exactly were her powers going to stop evolving?
"You're freaking out. I can tell."
"It's a lot to take in, but I'll get it. I promise. Just let me get used to it, okay?"
She nodded and he nodded too.
"Can I get my hug now?"
Rowan moved right away, pressing into his embrace and hugging him back as tightly as he hugged her. They stood for a while in that hug before she finally said: "One of us better order that pizza or we're going to have a grumpy teenager."
And she was right. So he let her go to let her order the pizza.
Right so maybe he wasn't as mad as he thought he was. Maybe all he really needed was the hug.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
Steve woke up that night to his skin burning, his head pounding, his stomach roiling and the world spinning around him.
He managed to lurch up and out of bed. He stumbled across their bedroom to the bathroom just in time to hurl.
This wasn't the first time this had happened. This had been happening on and off. He was in pain sometimes, he got winded when he was at work, this wasn't good.
He was in that washroom for maybe five minutes before he felt Rowan's presence. He hadn't even heard her leave the bed, but the second she was in their washroom he was aware of her, because she was taking the burn out of the air around him.
When she draped herself across his sweat slicked he felt nothing but her calm soothing presence radiating down into his bones. She stayed there, her arms wrapped around him until the burn left his body, until his stomach settled and the ache in his bones was leeched out.
And then she just sort of collapsed to the ground beside him.
"Are you okay?" he asked, simply because that wasn't normal but she just smiled, a hand reaching up to cup his cheek.
"No, no, baby, I'm okay. What about you? Does your stomach feel better?"
He nodded, reaching down to pull her up and into his lap.
"I just need to hold you," he whispered.
Because he did. Holding her made him feel better, having her near him took the sickness away.
After this he'd go get some water for his bile-burned throat. After this he'd curl up in their bed and hold his wife close and push aside any lingering worries that something was wrong.
After this…
"You should go to the doctor, Steve."
She broke the silent spell between them to say that and another beat of worry hit his system. Had she noticed the signs and symptoms of something more serious too? He thought he had been hiding it well, you know, except the vomiting.
"Babe I was just there, I'm fine," he said instead because he wanted that to be the truth and he didn't want her to be worried.
Except she didn't believe him, he could feel it. But she exhaled that disappointment out of her, snuggled into his side and simply said: "Okay."
Steve held her a little tighter. He was fine. He had to be.
