Fireflies was still looking for the cure to a world-wide scale fungal pandemic spanning over 20 years. One day they discover a case of immunity in a girl, only to meet retaliation from the girl's protege after attempting a lethal approach. The leader and head surgeon-researcher were murdered. In the face of utter defeat and humiliation, one of the researchers never gave up.

This is a sequel to "The Good Fight." The Fireflies have produced enough of the vaccine that protects against the infection to begin distributing it to survivors all over the country. Ellie and Abby are sent on a mission to vaccinate the entire city of Jackson. But Jackson's residents have a long memory, and they aren't exactly greeted with open arms.

Against his better judgement, and as a show of good faith to start rebuilding his and Ellie's bond, Joel lets Ellie and Dina take the route meant for him and Tommy.
