Response to Challenge #313 Murder Mystery Stalag. In order to get important information from the Underground, the team must first solve the murder of eleven people, two pigs, and a canary.

Vignette (But I might be inspired to go somewhere with it.) The boys have been captured and tortured horribly by the Gestapo. While they sit waiting in their cell, Carter has a question.

Nobody would have suspected things would turn out like this. Takes place after the episode "The Well". This is my first time publishing, so please be kind.

Hogan and his men have any number of challenges to face. On a daily basis, they must grapple with the Gestapo, with the guards, with Klink's violin, with double agents, with Marya, with hunger, cold, danger, boredom, hardship, and celibacy. And then there's the worst, most fearsome, implacable, and cruelest enemy of them all. The one they can't ever hope to defeat. Bureaucracy.

In the midst of an ordinary day, mail call brings unexpected news for Carter. The sunny optimist of Stalag 13 must lean on his most cynical friend in his sorrow. Based on an idea by Tuttle 4077 and written as her prize for decimating all comers in the Winter Reviewathon. A bit longer than promised.

It was just one mission. They both knew what to do. Carter would distract them with his angered officer routine. Newkirk would crack a safe in the meantime. But, when things begin to unravel, what will happen to our heroes? (A/N: The temporary hiatus is a result of technical difficulties. :/ I hope to post again soon! Sorry for the wait!)

Post-series. Hogan, long since retired, has a brief telephone call with an old friend to discuss the events of the day. A reaction to and meditation on the terrible events unfolding on the television screen today. I just don't have a witty comment for this. Not this.

Colonel Hogan may have been more amorous than he let on whenever he had Newkirk dress as a woman for a mission. He was good at hiding his intentions behind his rank and his sense of humor. Hogan investigates another unit's failed mission and fears the Underground might be compromised. Further complicating matters, London sends in a new team that rejects cooperation while Hogan is stuck with an unwanted new resident. Is there enough room in District XIII for two espionage units? Can he trust an old nurse? Rating changed effective Chapter 26 to M.

What happens when Newkirk finds out that his sister has been writing letters to Colonel Hogan-and that the Guv has actually been writing back? Letters from an irritable British corporal happen, that's what. In the season of giving, the moment eventually comes along not to repay a kindness, but to pay it forward. This story is connected to "In the Name of the Father," but it's not necessary to know that story to understand this one.

This is the second in what may become an annual tradition. My first story was done last year and called "Hidden Chanukkah." The stories are not related, and the dates are not meant to be cohesive.
