Modern AU : Two weeks after spending the night with John Thornton, Margaret Hale suddenly decides to leave Milton, Connecticut and return to England—and no one knows why or if she'll ever come back.

When John Thornton struggles to concentrate at work, his already fleeting focus is filched by the sight of his workers scurrying past his mill office window as if to avoid something. Inspecting the disruption, the master soon cottons on to the source of the commotion, and after swiftly returning home, John is determined to play the part of a supportive husband and devoted father.

When John and Margaret are forced to attend a tedious dinner party at the Watson's, they both grumble and gripe as they impatiently count down the minutes until they can make their excuses to go home and return to the private paradise that is their happy marriage.

As Henry Lennox takes his son to walk through the fields of Helstone, he points to the old parsonage, and as the man reminisces about days long ago, he tells the story of how a goddess from the south ended up marrying a mere mortal from the north.

This 2-part story follows The Thorntons as they have a family night out at Milton's first 5th of November festival extravaganza.

After an unexpected encounter on the night of the dinner party, Margaret tries to understand her new feelings for Mr Thornton amidst the trials of life in Milton. A mid canon retelling of North and South with more kissing.

Then, one morning, they unexpectably stumble upon a private and precious ritual that will last throughout the fifty years of the Thornton's happy marriage.
