Long ago, the fauna of 4546B lived in harmony under the rules of the generations of Sea Emperors. As tensions rise however, and the latest Sea Emperor's rule becoming increasingly violent, it seems as if there won't be any Sea Emperors left to guide the ways of the planet in the future.

When the deadly Kharaa bacterium rears its ugly head upon humanity, Ryley Robinson and many others, are sent on a desperate mission to the watery world of 4546B to find and retrieve the substance known as enzyme 42 before the Kharaa plague decimates the human civilization like the precursors before them. But of course, something goes wrong.

Riley Robinson is an engineer aboard the construction starship, the Aurora. Not content with the state of his life, he spitefully performs janitorial work aboard the ship while his colleagues do all the science without him. However, during the Aurora's eighteen month trip, something goes horribly wrong, and Riley learns that there are things much worse than being a janitor.
