Prologue

I awoke that morning with a start, my fur bristled in fear and my eyes were darting around the den in a panic as I tried to calm my racing heart. My two childhood friends, Nightflame and Shadowmist, were still sound asleep in their mossy nests, I sighed softly and quietly patted out into the warm Newleaf air. As a young kit, I could never decide if I wanted to be a medicine cat or a warrior, but in the end I became a warrior, I was also a medicine cat apprentice, Silverstar, the leader of our Clan had allowed me to train to be both a warrior and a medicine cat, so I headed into the medicine den to help my mentor, Mistyflower, sort herbs and treat some of the sick kits.

"Hi, Mistyflower. How's Moonberry?" I asked, and Mistyflower's expression turned somber as she stared me in the eyes.

"I'm going to be honest with you, Cinderwing. She's old, and I don't think she has long before she leaves to hunt with StarClan." Mistyflower meowed, and I lowered my gaze and stared down at my paws. I shut my eyes tightly as I held back my tears that threatened to fall, I knew my mother was growing old, but I felt like I still needed more time to rekindle my relationship with her.

"She-she can't go, Mistyflower." I mewed, as I gently licked the top of my mother's head, her neon yellow eyes slowly opened and she let out a soft purr as she looked at me.

"Don't be sad, Cinderwing, I'll always watch over you. You'll be a wonderful warrior and an even better medicine cat, I don't blame you for what happened to Silverleaf, she's always been hard to control, even I wouldn't have been able to stop her." Moonberry meowed, a raspy laugh bubbling up in her throat, as she stared at me with nothing but love and admiration shining in her eyes.

"But, Moonberry. You can't leave me, please, don't leave me!" I cried, as I barried my muzzle into her fur, my mother just smiled softly at me as her eyes began to close, a shutter passed through her body and then she was still, and it was then that I knew, my mother was gone. She was now hunting with StarClan.

"I-I don't have any family members left, my sister, Silverleaf, was hit by a Monster on the Thunderpather during a harsh Lead-bear season. And my father, Ravenfeather, was killed in a battle against HeatherClan." I quietly meowed to Mistyflower, once I I had finally calmed down and I slowly lifted my head from my mother's soft and silky jet black fur. My voice was horse and my eyes ached from crying.
