Hey guys! So this story is a little different from what I usually write. I'm writing it with my friend, and I can't wait to see where it goes. Anyways... on with the story!
Disclaimer: How would I own PJO?
Things were pretty quiet around camp these days. Well, by demigod standards at least. Sure the sun was barely up and yelling already filled the air, but that was normal. The ares cabin was probably just stirring things up like always.
Orion on the other hand, was in his blissfully empty cabin, trying to drown out the noise with his pillow. It was times like these that reminded him of New York. Not that he missed it. It's not like he had any friends in the city. Sometimes he wondered why he even bothered going back, until he remembered his mother. She was probably one of the few good things to come out of the mortal world. A star in a cloudy sky.
He remembered when he was younger. She taught him about the diamonds that littered the sky. Their names, their stories. He used to stare up at them and think about his namesake. Imagine what it would be like to hunt among the stars, to be so loved that after death, you were set in the sky, to be remembered for eternity.
He remembered begging to go to the harbor. He loved to watch the boats come in, cutting smoothly through the murky water. He stayed far away from the fishing boats though. He went near one once and thought he was going mad. Tiny screams had filled his head. He still had nightmares sometimes, although those had recently been replaced with ones much worse. He guessed that should have been the first clue about his heritage.
Things had been so much simpler back then though. Yeah monsters came, but-
"Oreo! You're gonna miss breakfast!" Theo banged on his door.
"Yeah yeah. I'm coming. And don't call me Oreo!" He grumbled, rolling out of the bed. He hated that stupid nickname.
Most of the campers were already milling around the dining pavilion when Penny got there, but of course Orion wasn't among them. She got her breakfast, sat at a table, and waited. And waited. And waited.
Finally after what felt like ages, she finally spotted his inky black hair in the crowd. He looked as if he had just rolled out of bed, which he clearly had. It was kind of endearing though.
Scraping his breakfast into the fire, he made his way over to her table. There were so many campers at this point, that Chiron had given up trying to enforce the table rule.
"Hey starfish, glad you finally decided to grace us with your presence," sarcasm dripped from her voice.
"Oh, so she can call you starfish, but I can't call you Oreo? I see how it is." When did Theo get here?
He ignored them both. Dark bags hung under his usually bright eyes, the sign of another sleepless night.
"So..." she decided to try again, "are you excited for tonight?"
"Yeah, I guess."
"You guess? You get to meet him for the first time and you guess you're excited?"
"What about you? You don't seem overly excited either."
Ugh, maybe she should just throw him in the lake. That ought to wake him up. The nightmares need to stop too. A few more nights like this, and he won't be able to function at all.
"That's different and you know it. And for your information, I am excited, I'm just good at hiding my emotions."
He met her hard gaze that dared him to argue. Grey eyes against sea-blue. Even sleep deprived, he refused to give in. It was one of the things she liked about him. He was almost as stubborn as her, but nobody could beat the will of a child of Athena.
She didn't know how long they stayed like that. It could have been seconds or hours. Time seemed to slip away when you stared at those sparkling blue orbs, matched only by the Caribbean Sea itself. Sometimes she wondered if-
Theo cleared his throat. "Either way, this is going to be an awesome game of capture the flag."
