Dexter never celebrated mortal holidays. Most sorcerers didn't, not unless they had mortal lovers or children. However, when Valkyrie invited him to celebrate Mother's Day, he accepted. Today was march 27th. Valkyrie assured him that Mother's Day wasn't as big and celebrated as Christmas, and he wouldn't be a bother. They drove to Valkyrie's childhood home together. For the entire drive, Dexter's leg bobbed up and down. Valkyrie noticed, but she didn't say anything. She didn't want to make him uncomfortable, and she knew that he hadn't been with his family in a long time. She wasn't sure exactly how long; he never talked about it.
They have a medium sized driveway and a medium sized house, very modern-styled. Valkyrie's little sister, Alice, was playing in the front lawn, making mud balls. She was gathering mud from the puddles; it had recently rained. Having heard their car pulling in, her head shot up. She smiled and waved at the sight of them.
"Oh my god, she is covered in mud," Valkyrie muttered. Dexter laughed. He got out of the car and met Alice half-way down the path to the front porch. He kneeled down to the small girl's level. Hi," he greeted, "I'm Dexter."
Alice reached her hand out to him, "I'm Alice. Nice to meet you." Dexter took her hand and shook it, "Likewise."
Alice didn't let go of his hand, "Come meet my mum!"
"Dad is out at work right now," Valkyrie noted.
Alice pulled Dexter along the path.. His hands were large, nearly tripling in comparison to Alice's. In his other hand, he held the bouquet of flowers. He tried to let go of Alice's hand to knock on the door, but she shook her head, "It's okay. I live here too so I can let you in."
"No, no, it's alright," he waved her away and knocked. Though, Valkyrie pushed him over a bit, "She's probably got her hands full. We don't need to knock."
"Oh, right," Dexter smiled half-heartedly. He was clearly on edge.
Alice pulled him through the door impatiently, "Mom!" Alice called, "Look who's here!" Melissa was standing in the kitchen, cutting vegetables. Water was boiling in a pot. She looked up, and when she saw Dexter, she smiled welcomingly. She put her knife down and walked over to him, "Hello, I'm Melissa. Nice to meet you," She hugged him, although she kept her hands off of him, "Sorry, I've got messy hands."
"It's okay," Dexter held out the flower bouquet, "Where should I put these?"
"Oh, thank you! This will help brighten up the house a little bit. Steph, find a pretty vase to put these in."
"I think your house is already very lively," Dexter assured her. It was true, for the most part. The house was modern and minimalistic, with a lot of grey and blue tones, and books were piled everywhere. At the same time, there were family photos framed and hung on the wall, messy drawings that Alice had made, and toys laying about. There was even some music playing from the television. These small things made their home welcoming and cozy. It looked like any healthy, loving family. It was something Dexter hadn't experienced in a long time. He hadn't realized how much he missed it.
"Oh, you're just being nice!" Melissa hummed. She had gone back to cutting vegetables.
"Come see our new puppy!" Alice interjected.
"A new puppy?" Dexter gasped, exaggeratingly.
"It's technically Stephanie's puppy, but I play with her too."
"What's her name?" Dexter asked.
"Xena," Alice said.
"That's a very pretty name," Dexter remarked.
Alice grinned, "Valkyrie named her."
"Valkyrie?"
"I'm supposed to call her Stephanie around my mum, but I'd rather call her Valkyrie."
"Your mom doesn't like it?"
"She gets scared that Valkyrie will get hurt," Alice explained. She looked up at him, "Will you show me magic?"
Dexter laughed, "No, I don't think your mum would be very happy with me."
Alice frowned, "I won't tell her."
"Well, I think we should listen to her anyways. Usually, moms are right."
"Do you still listen to your mum?" Alice asked skeptically.
"All the time," Dexter lied.
Alice sighed. There was a room blocked off by baby-gates. Dexter stepped over it, but Alice was too short. He picked her up and pulled her over the gate.
A little German Shepherd pup bounced over excitedly. She was adorable.
