I've been considering another Buffyverse crossover with Supernatural or Charmed and this is something that had been bugging me for a while. Takes place obviously during Supernatural series finale and after BTVS series finale. Again, Buffy and Dawn had met the Winchester brothers before in one of my one-shots.
Disclaimer: I do not own Buffyverse or Supernatural.
Buffy and Dawn were on the road as they were in a bar before they noticed a familiar face at the counter.
"Buffy." Dawn pointed as she and Buffy approached.
"Sam? Sam Winchester?" Buffy called out and Sam turned his head and smiled.
"Hey." Sam said as he hugged both Summers sisters. "Didn't think I'd see you here."
"Small world, isn't it? Been a long time." Buffy said.
"Where's Dean?" Dawn asked and Sam's face suddenly shattered as he pulled away.
"What's going on?" Buffy asked as Sam leaned onto the counter and grabbed his bottle tightly, silent for a minute, but it felt like an eternity before he spoke up with a haunted look full of grief and loss in his eyes.
"Dean's dead." Sam said lowly as Buffy and Dawn stared.
"Wait, like… for good dead? Permanent—"
Sam nodded. "Hunter's funeral. I burned the body. No coming back this time."
Buffy and Dawn looked at Sam in sympathy, their eyes getting wet.
"What happened?" Dawn asked as Sam took a breath.
"We followed an old case Dad had been going after for years. Vampires. We managed to kill them all but…" Sam sighed, holding back tears. "Dean didn't make it."
In a barn, Dean was impaled on a hook on a pillar from behind as Sam held him, both brothers on verge of tears after they had taken care of the vampires.
"You knew it was always gonna end like this for me. It was supposed to end like this, right?" Dean chuckled. "I mean, look at us. Saving people, hunting things, it's what we do—"
"Stop! Just… stop." Sam begged, almost on verge of tears.
"It's OK. It's good." Dean assured. "We had one hell of a ride, man."
Sam's breaths started to become shaky, not believing he was going to lose his brother again. "I will find a way, OK? I will find another way—"
"No, man, no, no, no, no bringing me back, OK? You know that always ends bad." Dean reminded.
"Dean, please…" Sam begged as Dean struggled to stay awake.
"I'm fading pretty… I'm fading pretty quick, so…" Dean held Sam by his shoulder and pulled him closer. "Come here. Let me look at you." He smiled at his younger brother. "There he is. I'm so proud of you, Sam. You know that? I've always looked up to you. When we were kids, you were so damn smart… you never took any of Dad's crap. I never knew how you did that." He looked at Sam with pride he had not ever shown before as Sam struggled to hold back tears. "And you're stronger than me. You always have been." He looked down before meeting Sam's eyes again, both of them on verge of tears now. "Did I… did I ever tell you I came back that night, when you were at school… when Dad hadn't come back from his hunting trip?"
"Yeah." Sam nodded, remembering. "The Woman in White."
"The Woman in White. That's right. I must've stood outside your dorm for hours…" Dean coughed. "Because I didn't know what you would say. I thought you'd tell me to… to get lost or to get dead." He looked down before meeting Sam's eyes again. "And I didn't know what I would've done… if I didn't have you…" He groaned in pain. "Because I was so scared. I was scared, because when it would come down to it, it was always you and me. It's always been you and me."
Sam nodded, sobbing. "Then don't leave me… don't leave me… I can't do this alone."
"Yes, you can." Dean assured as Sam shook his head.
"Well, I don't want to." Sam sobbed.
"I'm not leaving you." Dean assured as he tapped Sam's chest. "I'm gonna be with you here… every day, every day you're out there and you're living and you're fighting. You always keep fighting, do you hear me?" Sam nodded as Dean continued. "I'll be there every step. I love you so much. My baby brother." He smiled in pride at Sam as he struggled to keep his eyes open. "Well, I did not think this would be the day, but it is. But that's OK. I need you to promise me… I need you to tell me that's OK."
Sam shook his head, not believing he was going to lose Dean for good, barely able to hold back tears anymore as the floodgates were slowly opening as he and Dean held Dean's chest, where his heart was.
"Dean… it's OK… you can go now." Sam said and Dean nodded as they leaned their heads onto each other.
"Goodbye, Sam." Dean whispered as he slumped his head and his hand went limp and Sam sobbed, pulling his dead brother in for a hug, mourning for him.
Sam finished telling Buffy and Dawn what had happened and the sisters were in tears themselves, remembering themselves what had happened.
"Buffy… no…" Dawn protested, when Buffy was about to jump off the tower.
"Dawnie, I have to." Buffy said.
"No!" Dawn exclaimed as Buffy held her.
"Dawn, listen to me. Listen." Buffy said. "I love you. I will always love you. But this is the work that I have to do." Dawn nodded, while on verge of tears. "Tell Giles that… Tell Giles I figured it out. And… And I'm OK. And give my love to my friends. You have to take care of them now. You have to take care of each other. You have to be strong. Dawn, the hardest thing in this world… is to live in it. Be brave. Live... for me." She kissed Dawn on her cheek as Dawn sobbed, while Buffy turned towards the bridge and jumped off, diving into the portal and sacrificing herself.
"The worst thing is that even though I can bring him back, I know now that it's not what he wants. He always knew it would end this way for him." Sam said as a stray tear fell off his cheek.
"I'm so sorry, Sam." Buffy said, holding Sam by his hand.
"Look, if there's anything you need…" Dawn offered and Sam nodded gratefully.
"Thanks."
"What do you want, Sam? I mean, what do you really want?" Buffy asked. "What would Dean want for you?"
Sam sighed. "He'd want me to move on. We always knew I would never cut into the hunting life forever, unlike him."
"You're retiring?" Dawn asked as Sam considered.
"You know, I had this fantasy that one day, I'd finally live in peace now that it's over. No strings on me anymore and it's not specifically my and Dean's burden to face another globally threatening supernatural piece of work this time." San mused. "You know, a suburban house, wife, kids, playing baseball, helping with homework… and there are other hunters out there, asides from me or Slayers asides from you." He turned to Buffy.
"We're kind of taking a break from it all. We know the other Slayers and Scoobies need us but…" Buffy trailed off and Sam nodded.
"So, who would your wife be?" Dawn asked.
"I don't know yet… but I hope she won't be someone who has to take the crap like you two or Anya or Cordelia." Sam said as he turned to them. "No offense, it's just that…"
"Normal life. We get it. I don't think I'll ever get that but I think you could. Maybe it's time to move on." Buffy said.
"Maybe." Sam said as he bought two bottles of beer for Buffy and Dawn.
"To Dean and to everyone we've lost." Buffy toasted.
"To Cordy, to Tara, to Mom, to Jenny, to Anya, to Doyle, to Wesley and to Fred." Dawn said as they all drank.
Where one story ended, another one would begin.
Supernatural at least did a better job of giving the main characters the ending they deserve, with Dean dying doing what he wanted to do the most, hunting monsters and saving people and Sam later retiring and settling down and having a family, until he died of old age and reunited with Dean and their deceased family and friends, like John, Mary, Bobby, Rufus and others in Heaven and Arrow should take notes from it. And again, screw Whedon, considering what he did to Jenny, Joyce, Cordelia and Tara.
Please review and let me know if you have enjoyed this one-shot.
