My Girl

AvalonReeseFanFics

A/N: Well hello my wonderful readers! I know I should probably be waiting to start yet another story but I honestly just could not wait to share this story with people. It's literally one of my favourites. I've been having so much fun writing this one. This story is basically if Wo met Ro when she was a child and how he adopted her and raised her, and the chapters are all going to be ridiculous long. Like ten pages or more on average. Like Rewrite style length. Don't forget to tell me if you enjoy it and I'll see you guys next Monday!

Chapter 1

On one ordinary day, quite entirely out of the blue, the most dangerous man in the world adopted a child.

In stories such as these ones, this is done in some peculiar fashion, but not in this story. There was no meet-cute, no accidental assassination that left him morally forced to take in a child. No one died and gave him custody of their children. In fact, all data on him implied that if any of this were to happen, he wouldn't have cared.

But on this day, the most dangerous man in the world surprised everyone when he walked into an orphanage in Zhouzhuang, and walked out with a little girl.

Okay. So actually, he didn't really adopt her. He didn't sign any paper work, he wasn't taking custody, he was just… taking her.

To the people watching his every move it seemed entirely uncharacteristic, and unexpected. He had no business in the town, in the first place, no reason to be there. He had detoured quite drastically from the original itinerary he had planned. There was no interview. No paperwork. Nothing was signed or witnessed. For all they knew he had never met this girl before.

He simply walked into that orphanage and came out with the six-year-old girl in tow.

Here were the things they didn't know.

1. Wo Fat most certainly did know that little girl.

2. That for the last month, each and every calculated move he made had been dedicated to finding this little girl.

3. That this adoption was not actually supposed to be an adoption, but was just him keeping a six-month-old promise he had made to her.

You see, Wo Fat had told that little girl, once upon a time, that if no one came to collect her in a year he would come back and bring her home. Personally. Himself.

When he looked into the situation four months later, just to see where she was, he had been horrified to find her in an Orphanage and had gone to collect her.

It's just that no one, not even him, knew that home would forever be with him.

Not yet anyway.

But that's not where their story starts. It not where our story starts either. Our story starts with a phone call.

H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O

Wo Fat, with phone to ear and cigarette in mouth, stood leaning dapperly against a wall, waiting for the call to connect.

And No, that's not the phone call I'm talking about.

He had been calling this particular number every day for a week, and today, every hour. They had yet to pick up.

He didn't know if this was because she was still mad at him or if something was wrong. But he was promised updates on her progress, and even if she wasn't technically his, and it had only been a few days, he wanted his updates.

When they failed to pick up the call once more, he left the warehouse he had been working in and went to the car. He drove to their address trying to calm him self down. He had been trying to be patience, but it seemed to have finally worn out.

Patience was something that he was usually good at. Caring was something that had never existed inside his body before. And here he was impatient and very much caring.

He knew better then to buzz the gate when he got to the stately home. He parked his car a block away, double back to the house and merely hopped the fence.

He also knew better than to ring their doorbell. If they were screening his calls, they wouldn't open the door to him, even if he knew they were home.

So he went around he house and scaled the back wall and up to her bedroom.

It was almost her bed time, so she should have been around, in her pjs putting up a fight about going to bed. Because that was what she did when she was with him.

But she wasn't there.

The room was empty. It didn't look like a little kid had been staying there. All of her things were neatly packed away, not in the dresser or closet but in boxes. None of her mess was there. She was fond of piles.

But the glaring red flag was her bunny, sitting on the dresser.

She never went anywhere with out Mr. Buns. And if she did, he sat on the bed waiting for her. Never on a dresser she was too tall to reach the top of.

Something was wrong.

Grabbing that bunny, he stormed out of the room that should have been hers and down into the living room startling the two residents.

They jumped to their feet when they realized it was him, that he was in the house.

They had been so desperate for a child, so desperate to have his child, why wasn't she with them?

"Where is she?"

"Uh… she… she has a sleepover…"

Lies. Ro didn't get along with other children, she had no idea how to socialize with them. She just stared at them with her wide blue eyes as if they were foreign or she didn't trust them not to attack her.

She also would have pitched a screaming fit if they had tried to leave, she always did when he tried.

But the glaring evidence to prove their excuse a lie was in his hand.

"Ro doesn't go anywhere without Mr. Buns, and she definitely can't sleep without him! Where. Is. She?"

The husband exchanged glances with the wife and then finally cleared his throat. "Well, you see… she was so difficult…"

He knew they were having problems with her. They had her for one day before calling and asking him for advice. He had asked to speak to Ro on the phone but she had hung up on him. She was mad, they said. She hadn't wanted to leave, felt as if he hadn't wanted her, so she did what upset kids did. She was acting out.

She was just a little bit craftier and uh… violent, then most normal children.

But he had told them to expect that!

"I told you she was difficult. You said you were fine with difficult!" Wo thundered and they cringed. He knew it. He should have looked harder, found a different family, a better family. "What orphanage did you drop her in?"

They exchanged glances once more and something akin to fear flushed through his system.

They hadn't put her in an orphanage.

"What have you done?"

"You see… she was so hard to manage, and she was clearly unhappy… I recently lost my job and… and he offered us such a good price… "

Zhao.

"Zhao? You gave her to Zhao?" They nodded and that fear kicked up another ten notches. "Zhao is a human trafficker… do you know what he wants her for?" he shouted, because Wo Fat did. That man was never ever supposed to get his hands on Ro. The husband cringed again, the wife hid herself behind him sobbing. "How long has he had her?"

"Two days…"

Two. Days.

That was two days too long. He should have broke in to see his girl the first time they ignored his call.

With bunny in hand, he whirled around and left their spacious mansion.

Angry was an understatement.

He was furious.

As he stalked towards where he left his car, he pulled out his massive cellphone and called Zhao.

He figured the man would ignore his call but he must have figured that Wo would have found out eventually. That there was no point in ignoring the call coming in.

Though he should have been afraid he wasn't. He confirmed that he did have the girl, that he had no intention of giving her back, that he had a buyer set up already. Wo Fat could be upset, and that was fine, they could discuss what cut of the profit Wo Fat was entitled to when he calmed down.

By the end of the call his eye was twitching. Wo Fat never did anything without thinking it through first, but this time, time was of the essence and he didn't have the time to really put together much of a plan.

All he knew was that Zhao had something that belonged to him and he was going to get it back.

Now see. That's the call. That's the call I was talking about. That's the start of the story. But I told you that part so you'd understand the next part.

Are you ready to find out what he did?

H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O

The agents in charge of her stared at her, mouths both set in firm frowns. They were trying to mask the fact that they were afraid by acting angry. Her dad did that a lot.

"So… which one of you called him and told him you had me?"

They exchanged glances and her smile twisted in a cruel way.

"He never responds well to threats. Specially if they're made against me."

"That man is a sociopath, he's not capable of love," one of the agents growled at her.

True. And before her he hadn't. She was his anomaly, his exception.

"Whatever makes you feel better," she said with a shrug.

"We both know the only thing he cares about is what you know about his operation and what you'll tell us about it."

"Well, that's silly, because I know nothing about his operation," she said. "And he knows that. And he knows I won't talk either. Well, that's not true, he knows I talk a lot but never about important things."

"You know something. You know where his bases are, you know his movements, and you are going to talk. You're going to talk because as suspected terrorist you have no rights. Not to a lawyer, not to a fair trial, and I can do anything I have to to make you talk."

Wow. See, if she didn't know any better, she'd be scared. But she did know better, and she knew, she knew that they were bluffing, because no one who hurt her survived. Everyone knew that.

So she just rolled her eyes.

"You guys haven't heard the rest of the story. Go on. Ask what he did," she said shooting them a grin.

Neither of them answered her though.

"Fine, I'll just tell you."

H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O

After he dropped her bunny off at home so he wouldn't get him all bloody he went straight to get Ro. He got to Zhao's base of operations, which was a little office in the Tianjin Port.

It was empty.

Fair, he was probably expecting to ship people tonight, there was a big ship leaving in the morning. And if he was smart, which he was, he would want to move Ro as soon as possible. Before Wo found out he had her.

Except he had found out.

And if he had found out after, when she was already in that shipping container, he would have gone after her. So really, it wouldn't have mattered either way.

But this way was easier.

He left the office, heading towards the ship he knew Zhao was putting his cargo on.

He knew he was walking into a trap but he didn't care. He didn't care because he had a plan, and part of that plan was making sure that Zhao knew he was coming.

If the man was smart, he'd have Ro with him. She'd be a hostage, but that didn't matter, because Wo needed eyes on her.

When he got to the ship Zhao was there and with him was his little Ro.

She was in a set of light blue denim overalls that he had bought her, and a white knit sweater, well it was white when he bought it for her, it was grey now. She was in her white shoes and the white socks with the lace around the cuff, those too had a grey tinge, which meant that she was kept somewhere ridiculously dirty.

Her long brown hair was in messy braids, messy because they probably had been done two days ago and there were falling out without the retouches.

Her pale face was tear stained was pointed at him, her way-too-blue eyes wide and on him. Her hands were tied up but when she saw him she tried to go to him. Zhao put a hand to her shoulder and jerked her back.

Wo smiled the second he saw her, smiled in illogical relief. He couldn't see a single sign of physical trauma on her and that made him happy.

But the second he was out in the open the rest of Zhao's men appeared. All of them with a gun trained on him, semi-circling him. He was out-manned and out gunned.

Zhao was smiling at him, smug, like he already won. Like it was wonderful to see Wo Fat with his hands raised in surrender.

But he didn't care about Zhao at that moment all he cared about was Ro.

"Hello Ro," he said and his girl just stared at him, clearly confused as to how he could be so happy whilst surrounded by guns all pointed at him. But this was exactly where he wanted to be.

He might have played into Zhao's plan but Zhao had definitely played into his.

He took his eyes off of the little girl and turned them back to Zhao. "I'd like her back now."

Zhao took in that request and then threw back his head and cackled.

"Do you really think you're in a position to boss me around?"

Wo Fat just calmly shrugged. "It's easy. You give me the girl and I won't kill you. Perfectly fair, perfectly reasonable. Now let her go and hand her over."

Zhao laughed again, the gun jutting into the little girl's head causing her to wince. Those tears were falling again and a jolt of discomfort and anger ran through him.

All these emotions clamouring in his chest, trying to claw their way out, were so very new to him. But he didn't have time to figure out what was going on with him, all that mattered was getting Ro back.

And honestly, he was done playing nice. He turned his focus back onto the girl in front of Zhao and tried to smile encouragingly at her.

"Close your eyes," he ordered. The little girl blinked those big blue eyes of hers clearly too panicked to listen to him. "Ro. Close your eyes. And don't open them no matter what you hear."

"That's right. Close your eyes, you don't want to watch your daddy die, do you?" Zhao taunted almost cruelly. "Oh, except he didn't want you. What's the plan Wo? Take her back and find her a new family? Or are you going to put her back in some orphanage? At least if you give her to me, you can get a cut of the profits."

Ro sniffed, but she did as she asked. She closed her eyes.

Now it was Wo's turn to smile.

And then he put a bullet in every person on that dock with us.

H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O

"That's different," the man in charge snapped. Interrupting her story. "This is a government building. He's not going to storm a government building for you."

"Are you sure?" she asked with a wince? "Because he's a pretty determined and focused man and his singular focus for the last 20 years has been me."

Outside the room came the sound of shouts and gunshots. Both agents turned towards the door.

"Uh-oh."

The explosion was next, and it shook the room, and had the agents jumping out of their seats.

"Well… that doesn't sound good."

"Shut up!" one man shouted whirling around probably to hit her, but the door came down and with it came a hailstorm of bullets and the whisps of smoke.

Ro half ducked the best she could behind that table as the two men in front of her took the brunt of the bullets.

When the person in the doorway was done shooting, he stepped into the room. Outside, the chaos continued but Ro smiled as the man calmly stepped over the dead bodies to get to her.

Ro Fat smiled up at him. "Hi Daddy."

Despite the worry that had no doubt wreaked havoc through his system her father smiled.

Upon first glance it wasn't obvious that they were related, because they weren't. They made an odd pair. Her a little white girl who had dyed her brown hair blonde, and the ex-MSS assassin and current Crime boss. They didn't look like they went together, but they totally did. Like white on rice.

"One of these days I'm going to leave you," he warned as he leant over to uncuff her from the table.

"That's not true, you'd miss me too much."

With her hands free, her father reached over and ruffled her hair. He didn't confirm that statement as true but she knew it was.

"Come on, let's go home."

And just like he did on that night when he first met her, he outstretched a hand for her to take.

And, just like that first night, she took it. Without a single bit of hesitation.
