The von Trapps had finally arrived in their destination.
It had been a long hard month, trying to escape the Nazis. They had gone through a lot. Georg had spent endless nights worrying whether or not they will be able to find a safe haven. Fortunately his oldest daughter and son, Liesl and Friedrich, was always there and willingly helped him support the younger children. He could not thank them enough.
Georg managed to have some of his money transferred here in America, but it was not enough for all eight of them. With the help of some good samaritans - an old couple who were living all by themselves - they got a temporary shelter.
The old couple had been so willing to welcome them in their home, brought by the fact that there were only two of them there and the nearest neighbor was a few miles away. It was a very isolated town, perfect for the von Trapps to hide in case some of Hitler's men had followed them. Georg simply could not let them out of his mind. He might sound paranoid, yes, but it was all for their safety.
Georg found a stable job in a nearby town as a carpenter. He also had let his oldest two work for the family after their consistent pleading. He let Friedrich work with him, and Liesl worked as a babysitter.
A month had passed, and no news from the Nazis. He realized that they are free.
Georg had eventually made contact with the US Navy. They were able to provide him a home at Vermont but due to some circumstances, he was not yet able to work for them. They prepared to move again, but not before Georg insistently giving the old couple some of the money he got after giving him and his family a temporary home (the old couple never wanted the money, but only took it when Georg accepted the food the couple prepared for their journey).
They traveled for a few hours in a rented cab until they arrived in Vermont.
By the time Georg opened the car door, he almost fell after being pushed by his children excitedly running to their new home. He chuckled and shook his head.
"Kurt! Friedrich!" He shouted while the cab driver opened the car compartment where their baggage were. "Don't leave your old man carrying all these heavy bags!"
The two hurriedly came up to him and carried some bags, obviously excited and already talking about which room they are taking.
Georg paid the driver and carried the remaining bags, smiling as he walks to the doors of their new home.
It was only a small home, but it can fit all eight of them.
There is a small farm behind in which he can make a fortune out of. He did not know a thing about farming as he grew up from an aristocratic family, but thanks to Brigitta - who had a green hand and knows so much about plants, Georg thought that he can at least make some money out of it.
He can feel his children getting giddy around him as he pulled the keys out from his pocket. He turned the key and pushed it open, and that was the second time in that day he almost fell because of his children's excitement.
He shouted again, "Hey! You left all your bags in here!" He waited and shook his head, knowing that his words fell on deaf ears.
It took a few minutes for Georg to take all the baggage in, not minding the shouting all around the house talking about how beautiful the view is and arguing what room they wanted to slept in.
He went back out on the porch and closed the door, covering his children's noises inside. He sat and leant his back on the chair, sighing with a content smile on his face.
His family is finally safe.
