A/N: This is the prologue to the main plot. Next chapter will be added soon
February 13, 1985
She woke up knowing exactly what day it was. Happy as can be, now four-year-old Luna Lovegood dashed down the stairs, feeling the smell of freshly-baked chocolate chip cookies coming straight out of the oven.
Walking into the kitchen, she saw her mother. She wore thick glasses with a jet-black rim, along with a floral sheer dress. Her hair was long and wavy, identical to her daughter's.
"Happy birthday, my little Loony!" she said with a grin. Luna grinned too- she loved it when her mother had called her that.
"Cookies for breakfast?" Luna asked. She was happy, but confused- her mother never, ever, not in a million years, would let her have anything sugary for breakfast.
"Of course! It is your birthday, after all!" Luna was suddenly excited, quickly nibbling down every cookie with glee.
After five minutes, her father came in.
"Happy birthday, my wonderful Luna!" he said in his usual optimistic voice, kissing every inch of her face. Luna giggled as she tried to shove him off.
Luna's mother smiled to see her husband, but then frowned when she saw his outfit: A pale pink suit and a dark, leather briefcase.
"Xeno, don't tell me you're off to another job interview! It's Luna's birthday, shouldn't you stay home and enjoy some family time?"
"I assure you, Pandora, I will get this job. It's for The Quibbler. To be an editor. As soon as I get the job, I'll come straight home,"
"So you're saying you're not coming home since you won't get this job, like every other job you've interviewed for for the last, oh I don't know, six months?"
"Daddy's leaving us?" bewildered Luna asked, looking up at her mother.
"Oh, of course not, Luna!" her mother reassured her. Then she looked up at her husband. "I guess she'll only turn four once! We shouldn't argue on her birthday. Come back as soon as the interview is over, Xenophilius," Even though she wasn't old enough to know the ways of the world well, Luna knew that whenever she called her father Xenophilius instead of Xeno or Phil, she was serious.
Luna's father grabbed a handful of Floo Powder and left toward the living room.
"The Quibbler Headquarters!" he said loudly, then he let the Powder fall from his hand.
"Bye, Daddy!" Luna cried, as she watched her father disappear in a flash of green fire.
After Luna finished her dish of cookies, Luna's mother peeked out the window.
"Oh, would you look at that!" she said excitedly. "Your gift must have arrived!"
A barred owl flew through the window and landed on Luna's head, then dropped the letter into her outstretched hands.
"Get off of Luna, Sasha," the owl obeyed her owner's orders, flying toward his cage.
Luna's mother opened the letter then frowned. "Oh. This is just a letter saying the delivery was canceled. What a shame!"
"Can we go to Ginny's house, instead?" Luna asked, ruffling her hair back to the way it was.
"Of course! Do you want to take Floo Powder or the portkey?"
"I like the portkey," Luna said excitedly, bouncing off her chair and running off to the living room. Most magic parents would have never let their children take portkeys anywhere, typically they'd hug them tightly while using floo powder or, but Luna's parents always thought she was perfectly capable.
There was a shelf of portkeys that led to several places that the Lovegoods visited often. To Muggles, it would've seemed like a messy shelf of junk. Luna had never seen or met a Muggle before, therefore she didn't know for sure how one would react to a portkey. Probably how Luna had felt when she had taken one for the first time.
Luna knew exactly where each portkey took them: the copy of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them took them to Diagon Alley, where she occasionally followed her mother to buy potion ingredients and ice cream. The tissue box sent them to the library, where Luna'd spend hours with her mother, reading The Fountain of Fair Fortune. And of course, the fluffy pom-pom hat would take her to the Weasley's, Luna's favorite destination.
Luna shoved a stool to just under the shelf. She could reach the shelf when she stood on her tippy-toes and barely be able to touch the portkeys.
"Ready?" Luna's mother asked slyly.
"Ready!' Luna replied excitedly.
Both of the girls touched the hat, and their feet elevated from the ground. Luna squealed with joy, and her mother laughed next to her. They landed in front of the front door. Luna's mother knocked with her golden ring. Luna had neve known what it was for.
Ginny's mother opened the door.
"Pandora! Oh, and Luna! Happy birthday!" she crouched down to give Luna a quick hug.
"Hi, Molly. Luna wanted to come and see Ginny," Luna's mother said. "Unsurprisingly," she added under her breath, while grinning.
"She's playing with the twins… or the twins are playing with her, apparently… FRED WEASLEY, GET THAT RAT OFF YOUR SISTER THIS INSTANT!"
"It's just Scabbers, Mum!" Luna heard George's voice through the doorway. Ginny had always found it amazing that Luna knew the difference between the two voices, but Luna knew: Fred's voice was just barely more high-pitched.
Luna poked her head in through the doorway to see: Scabbers, Percy's pet rat (Who was a hand-me-down pet rat from Charlie, who had decided he didn't need him after having him through his first two years at Hogwarts) was creeping up Ginny's chest, toward her face. She seemed terrified, and the twins were laughing so hard their cheeks were bright pink. Percy poked his hand in between the twins, trying to grab his rat, and Fred held Scabbers with a loose grip, trying to pull him away from his older brother, while still keeping it on his sister's chest..
"Scabby!" Luna cried excitedly, dashing by to snatch the rat out of Fred's hands. She outstretched her hands and spun around and around until she got dizzy.
"Accio Scabbers!" Mrs. Weasley said, pointing her wand at the rat. Scabbers flew out of Luna's tiny hands and toward Ginny's mother. Fred, George, and Percy all tried desperately to grab the rat while it flew midair, but he flew just barely above their reach.
"Mum! They stole my rat! I should have it back!"
"Percy's going to ditch Scabbers like Charlie did in his first year at Hogwarts, anway! Why can't we have it?" Fred protested through gritted teeth. Luna led Ginny to her room, running away from her brothers.
"So, um, happy birthday, Luna!"
"Thanks. What's it like with siblings?" Luna asked curiously.
"Siblings?" Ginny replied. "Well, I'll say you're lucky to not have any,"
