Well, this broke my heart to write. I used lyrics from the Maddie and Tae song, Die From a Broken Heart (which obviously isn't mine) and I tweaked them just a bit. It is also inspired by one of my favorite scenes from Supernatural. This starts at the end of 4x13, and there is a major character death. This is a tearjerker. Enjoy.
Disclaimer: Not mine.

The gunshot came out of nowhere.
One second Eddie was laughing and talking to him, and the next blood sprayed all over Buck's face and clothes.
Eddie's blood.
For a breath they both stood there, the pair trying to puzzle out what had just happened. Then Eddie wavered before crumpling to the ground, and Buck was dragged to the ground behind the firetruck. His eyes never left Eddie's face, even as he was pinned to the concrete and Eddie's blood slowly pooled around him.
The wind had been knocked out of Buck but it didn't register with him. All he could see was the pain filling Eddie's eyes, and the way the injured man's hand came out, reaching for Buck.
How could life be this cruel?
The moment Eddie's eyes slipped shut, Buck let out an animalistic scream.
"Eddie!"
Despite the weight pinning him down, Buck shoved the other man off of himself and scrambled to Eddie. In the moment he didn't give a damn about the sniper or Bobby yelling at him to take cover.
He had to get to Eddie.
The second his fingers touched fabric, he grasped onto it and began pulling Eddie back toward the safety of the rig. A bloody path was left in the wake of the movement, and Buck carefully laid Eddie on his back, trying to get a look at the wound. "Stay with me, Eddie," he said softly, immediately applying pressure. His gaze swung up to Bobby, whose expression was somber. "Bobby-"
Shaking his head, Bobby motioned Hen over. "The second it's safe, we'll move him."
Color drained from Buck's face as another shot was fired. "He's already lost too much blood-"
"And we can't help him if we get shot in the process," Bobby reluctantly pointed out, helping Buck put pressure on the wounds.
"Buck…"
For a moment, Buck thought he had imagined the whisper. But when he looked down and saw Eddie's eyes, his heart jumped into his throat. "Hey… I'm here," he breathed, running a trembling hand over Eddie's mussed hair. "We're taking care of you…"
"Chris...Christopher…" Eddie's eyes were glazing over and Buck weakly shushed him.
"I know. I know. I'll look after him until you go home," Buck promised, watching in horror as Eddie's blood continued to spill. "Just stay with me."
Eddie peered up at him with tired eyes, and Buck felt his own heart stop when Eddie stopped breathing.
"Eddie, stay with me!"
Buck hated hospitals.
He had ever since he was a kid and had his first broken bone and concussion from falling out of a tree after Brian Shucker had dared him to climb to the second limb. His parents had barely reacted and it was Maddie who had looked after him when he came home.
He had had too many close calls in the last few years, usually with himself being the cause of it. Chimney had joked that they needed to name a wing after him. Surely he gave them enough business.
Buck raised his head and peered around the packed waiting room. Maddie and Chimney were on either side of them, their daughter at home with Chimney's surrogate mom. Bobby and Athena were close by, looking equally worried. Hen was on the phone, ordering coffee and food from the sound of it. He vaguely remembered Maddie telling him that Christopher was with Carla, who was prepared to look after the boy for as long as possible.
A doctor in blue scrubs stepped into the room, and suddenly everyone was on their feet. "Are you all here for Eddie Diaz?"
Bobby stepped forward, nodding. "We are. We're his family," he replied gruffly.
The doctor cleared his throat, looking uncomfortable. "The damage was considerable, and the blood loss...it was simply too severe."
Buck swayed on his feet, barely feeling Maddie beside him. This wasn't happening. It wasn't happening.
"We did everything we could, but…"
Buck hit his knees as the room dipped and spun around him.
Can your knees give out
from praying so hard?
Can you go blind
from crying in the dark?
The days that followed were tainted with rage and disbelief. Buck had to be the one who broke the news to Christopher, and the one to hold the boy as he cried himself into an exhausted sleep. He spent two days and nights in Eddie's apartment, trying helplessly to comfort Christopher while burying his own grief.
The night before the funeral, Carla insisted on staying with Christopher for a few hours so Buck could go home and get himself cleaned up. Buck argued but he didn't stand a chance against the kind hearted woman.
He should have fought harder.
When he arrived at his empty apartment, the silence suffocated him. Everywhere he looked, he saw Eddie. It was the first time he had been alone in two days and he didn't realize he was sobbing until he gasped and rubbed his wet eyes.
Suddenly impotent rage filled him. How dare Eddie leave him alone? They had been on the cusp of something, and now he had to face the world without his best friend.
Without the man he…
Letting out a cry of pure grief, Buck swept everything off of his kitchen table with his arms. Then he grabbed the closest dining room chair and broke it over the table, letting the pieces scatter.
His entire apartment was wrecked before he realized he wasn't alone. Maddie was suddenly beside him, tugging on his arm. "Buck?"
Shaking his head, Buck slipped to the floor and buried his face in his sister's abdomen as sobs overtook him. He felt her fingers thread through his hair as she shushed him, but he couldn't breathe. He was unaware he was even speaking until Maddie answered.
"He loved you, Evan. I promise, he loved you."
A new wave of grief and guilt crashed into him as he clung tighter to his sister.
How was it possible to hurt so badly?
Maddie, the nerve of this guy
To leave me so easy
Am I gonna be alright?
I wanna kick myself
For falling so hard
Maddie, can you die
From a broken heart?
Finis.
