Occasionally, when you consume a piece of media, you are struck by the feeling that this is something great. The Mona Lisa, a New Hope, the Lord of the Rings, 1984, Dragon Ball, etc. While you can dislike these works, while you argue against the fact that they are of high quality, the fact of the matter is, these pieces of media have had such a large impact on the world that without them, it would be a completely different place, that is something that you cannot argue against. Berserk, is one of these. A great work of art, in my opinion, is something that is of obviously high quality, and has pure human emotion put into its creation, both of which perfectly describe Berserk. It is a work that shows the darkest and lightest sides of the human condition, the pain and rage of betrayal, the horror of war, to the joy of civilization, and the grief that comes with loss. It is a piece of media that defines, what it means to be human. To struggle against forces that seem all powerful, to grieve, at the loss of people, ideals, a way of life, and to be in the hell that is total solitude. It is a work that has influenced millions, and will influence millions more.
I am a reader, not a writer. I fear putting words out in a world that can seem so daunting at times, to show my deepest thoughts to others. But because Miura died, because his work will never be truly finished, I wish to grieve, for a man who was able to do something that I was not, and show the world a side of himself that many would consider to be private. So, with my whole being, thank you, Kentaro Miura.
