The Beginning of A Journey

Dawn Berlitz, the three-time grand festival winner, and top coordinator became a full-fledged baker. She had won her third grand festival a year ago in her home region. It was a surreal moment for her, being the first female to win three grand festivals after her struggles throughout the years. When the excitement and euphoria died down she didn't know what to do with herself.

Participating in contests was all she knew growing up and then she became bored of it. It was by chance that she saw an opportunity online. It was an ad from the Galar Region. A local baker was looking for an apprentice and with her mothers urging she accepted the apprenticeship. It was a chance for her to expand on her decent baking skills and explore a new region.

She left with only her Piplup and Pachirisu, leaving her other pokemon with her mother. She spent two years training under her master who was a real slave driver. He was getting older and wanted to pass on his skills to someone that was worthy and even though she was worked to the point of exhaustion on some days, she was happy, as was her pokemon.

When her apprenticeship was over, she tearfully said her goodbyes to her master and randomly boarded a ship that was headed for the Hoenn region. She had a new goal on her mind and it wasn't contest-related. Her goal was to travel across the regions, learn and create new recipes, and spread her tasty treats to both humans and pokemon.

Only her master and mother knew of her goal and they both supported her. She was out of the spotlight for two years and she was already prepared to be on the news. She hated reporters but she was actually going to use them to promote her treats.

"Piplup, we arrived in Lilycove City!" Dawn expressed to Piplup who was on her shoulder. Gone were her regular traveling clothes, instead she wore an Alcremie themed outfit that was completed with a baker's hat.

"Piplup!" He shouted excitedly.

"It's been a while since we came here and look," Dawn pointed at the contest hall, "it seems there is a contest today."

"Pip piplup!" He said, waving his arms and pointing at the stands.

"You think so too, buddy!" Dawn smiled, walking over to where the booths are, "we arrived at the right time. We should set up our booth before the contest finishes!"

"Piplup!" He said excitedly.

Dawn suddenly stopped and frowned. "It's not that easy though, Piplup," The bluenette sighed and turned away, "we need a permit to be able to sell in front of the contest hall or we would be forced to move by security."

"Pip pip lup lup!" Piplup jumped off of her shoulder and started to run.

"Piplup, where are you going?!" Dawn shouted, running after her pokemon.

Piplup led her to the beach and started jumping up and down on the sand. Dawn eyed her little blue pokemon with a grin. "You want me to bake here?" Dawn questioned the pokemon and he nodded, "then it's settled!"

Dawn grabbed her remaining five pokeballs and threw them into the air. "It's time to cake it up!" Dawn yelled as her pokeballs erupted in a burst of light.

"Piplup..." Piplup shook his head at her new catchphrase.

Dawn playfully glared at him. "You don't like it? I thought it was pretty cute." She pouted.

He shook his head and patted her shin with his fin and walked over to the other pokemon. "Brat," Dawn muttered with a smile and looked at her pokemon that were looking at her expectantly.

"Alright guys, today is the first day of our journey as a traveling patisserie!" Dawn exclaimed at her team of pokemon happily cheered, "Machamp and I will set up our portable kitchen, and Piplup and Alcremie will assist in sanitizing our tools. The rest of you can play until we are finished."

Thus began the arduous task of her setting up the portable kitchen. She was glad that pokeballs could easily store items which made things much easier for her but it was still difficult. When she felt the heat of the sun disappeared she was relieved at how effective Machamp was at setting up the tent.

"Great job, Machamp!" Dawn sent her pokemon a thumbs up and a wink.

"Machamp!" Machamp shouted happily and began to flex his muscles.

She set up the table and portable sink by simply releasing them from a Pokeball. Next was the tools she needs to make her treats. She placed them inside the sink but not before blocking the drain with the metal stopper.

"Piplup, fill up the sink using Whirlpool and Alcremie use Mystical Fire to heat it up to a boil."

Piplup conjured a mini whirlpool and filled up the sink and then Alcremie conjured purple flames underneath the sink and in no time the water began to boil. Dawn walked over to the steaming sink and observed the water before signaling for Alcreamie to stop.

"Alright everyone, huddle up!" Dawn recalled her pokemon whom she loved dearly.

She had traveled to Galar region with only two pokemon and ended up catching more. Her beloved pokemon each had a role to perform on her patisserie team and they enjoyed what they do because they get to eat her treats afterward.

Piplup was the clumsy self-appointed leader of the group since he was her very first pokemon. Her other pokemon looked up to him despite his clumsiness. His control over his water moves made him effective in cleaning as well as providing water for them.

Pachirisu was the hyper ingredient berry finder and his role was essential. He can smell berries for miles and easily track them down. He was fast and nimble when gathering berries to store in his fluffy tail.

Alcremie, one of her newer pokemon, was the quiet and shyest pokemon she ever had and it made her super adorable. Her role was to help in decorating pastries with her move "Decorate" and assisting Piplup in scalding her tools for use.

Vanillite was her cheerful little ice cream cone that plays a large role in keeping some of her ingredients frozen. He is able to use his freezing breath to chill some of her pastries and turn them into frozen treats.

Combee, her little honey gatherer, was super sweet and loving. She helps Pachirisu in finding ingredients but her main role was to provide honey for the honey glazed treats or recipes that involved using honey. However, she had another role in attracting pokemon and humans with her move "Sweet Scent".

Machamp was her physical laborer and secret foodie but he also acted as a self-appointed bodyguard for her and the other pokemon. He doesn't really care about the process of creating the treats but he loves to eat them.

Despite all of this she didn't forget to train them and would occasionally join a tournament or contest for fun to keep her skills and her pokemon skills sharp. Especially for Machamp who loves battling and contests the most out of all of her pokemon.

"The special for today is Underwater Strawberry Tart!" Dawn told her pokemon excitedly. Her pokemon looked at her with hungry eyes and drool running down their mouths. "This recipe is the one I was working on before we left Galar and it's specially made to cater to people and both water and ice type pokemon. Since Hoenn is known for its beautiful oceans and beaches I thought it would be fitting to make this our first recipe!"

"Piplup!"

"Vanill!"

Dawn looked at her pokemon that were happily cheering while the others wore a sad expression. She smiled. "No need to worry guys, this is not the only treat we will be making today. We are doing treats for all pokemon types today, so let's get started!"

Dawn set out all of the tools and ingredients she needed. Only Piplup, Alcremie, Pachirisu, and Vanillite would be helping her for now. Combee was happily buzzing around Machamp as he looked around with cautious eyes.

She preheats the portable oven to 350° before she grabbed the flour. In a large bowl, she whisked together flour, sugar, and salt. She melted the butter with the help of Alcremie and stirred it in until dough forms. She pressed the mixture into two 11" tart pan with a removable bottom, pressing it with a plastic spatula until the dough is smooth. She pricked it all over with a fork and placed them in the oven to bake until golden for 25 to 30 minutes.

While that was doing she looked at the contest hall and knew she had some more time before it would be finished. She began to prepare to make her modified poffins for every type and some other frozen treats.

When some more time had passed she moved to the oven and took out the two tart pans using pink mittens. "Vanillite, can you cool these down please?"

"Vanillite!" Vanillite hopped across the table and blew its icy breath across the pans which rapidly cooled down the two pans.

"Thank you, Vanillite!" She thanked her pokemon before turning to Alcreamie. "Alcremie, use Decorate!"

"Cremie!" Alcremie raised her hands that glowed and held them over the two pans. Dawn and her pokemon watched in amazement as cream strawberries appeared on the surface of the baked dough. However, the real seller of the tart was how it was completely covered in deep blue gelatin as if underwater.

"Awesome job, Alcremie!" Dawn praised her pokemon who easily remembered the way she decorated the first tart she had done.

Alcremie couldn't just use decorate on cakes just like that. She needed to have a reference before she was able to copy what she had seen. That means, that she had to be the reference for her pokemon. She had the task of being the first one to decorate any pastry before Alcremie could copy her.

When she was finished making all of her frozen treats, she and her pokemon made a magnificent display for them on the table. The two Underwater Strawberry Tarts were the centerpiece of the table, delicately placed on a miniature Gyarados cake-stand made of ice which was the work of both Piplup and Vanillite, and surrounding the cake-stand were plates filled with cupcakes of many different colors and designs which was the courtesy of Alcremie and honey glazed poffins.

"We are finally done everyone and before the contest is finished!" Dawn cheered happily as did her pokemon, "Now, for the finishing touch, Combee use sweet scent!"

"Bee!" Combee buzzed around the table, where all of the treats were, before releasing a pink wind that spreads throughout the air, going in the directions of the sea and the contest hall.

Within minutes, Staryu, Krabby, and other pokemon emerged from the water. Some of them eagerly coming onto the sand and approaching the tent. Wingulls swooped down and landed on the sand, watching the tent carefully.

Machamp chose this time to step in. "Machamp champ Machamp champ champ!" He spoke to the slowly approaching pokemon with folded arms. The approaching pokemon quickly formed a line as the intimidating form of Machamp worked like a charm.

"Good job, Machamp!" Dawn said before handing Piplup and Pachirisu to bowl full of honey glazed poffins for water types, "You both are in charge of handing out the poffins to the pokemon, alright?"

"Woah, this looks amazing!"

Dawn turned around at the voice and instantly recognition filled her eyes. "Welcome to the Travelling Patisserie, Champion Brendan!" She replied with a smile.

Brendan looked at her with a lopsided grin. "You're Dawn, right?"

Dawn was surprised. "How did you know?" She knew she was somewhat famous but she didn't expect him to know her.

Brendan blushed. "How could I not know the Angel of Sinnoh and the first person to woman to hold three grand festival titles?"

Dawn's cheeks reddened in embarrassment at the coined nickname she hadn't heard in two years. "Well...that's me, I guess."

"You were under the radar for two years and now I see why." He replied, looking at the table with astonishment, "Are you still in the contest circuit?"

Dawn shook her head. "I may do the occasional contest but it isn't my passion anymore," She quickly said, "anyway, how can I help you?"

"What do you have?" Brendan asked, almost drooling at the treats that covered the entire table.

Dawn began to explain the contents of her treats before showing him the main special. "And finally, we have the main special of the day, the Underwater Strawberry Tart!"

"I will have a slice of that please," He said before looking at her Alcremie on the table, "Wow, I have never seen an Alcremie in person. She is adorable and you have pokemon I haven't seen you use before."

Dawn, who was slicing the tart, smile at his words. "She definitely is, isn't she?"

Alcremie blushed and covered her face with her hands. "Creamie." She softly said.

Brendan laughed and looked behind Dawn at the line of water pokemon. "You cakes and stuff must be really tasty if you have a line of water pokemon eager for food."

Dawn plated the slice of the tart and handed it to him. "I enjoy seeing the happy faces of pokemon when they eat my stuff."

"What about the happy faces of people?" He winked before taking a bite out of the tart. His eyes were wide as saucers as he chewed the piece he bit off slowly. When he finally swallowed he looked at her in amazement.

"This is the best thing I ever tasted in my whole life and how much is it?!" Brendon exclaimed before devouring the rest of the tart.

"It's free of charge." Dawn simply said, shocking him.

"Free?!" Brendan shouted, looking at her like she was crazy.

"The smell is coming from over there!" A voice cut through the crowd exiting the contest hall.

"Looks like the contest has finished," Dawn commented, "Vanillite give everything on the table a round of your icy wind! Combee give us another round of your sweet scent!"

"Oh my god, is that Dawn, the Angel of Sinnoh?!"

"Dawn and Brendan are together, oh my god, let's go over there!"

"You have a big crowd coming," Brendan said, looking at the approaching crowd worriedly, "Do you need a hand?"

She shook her head and smiled. "Machamp can handle it, isn't that right, Machamp?" She said, looking up at her big and sturdy pokemon.

"Champ!" Machamp replied, standing in front of the tent with his hands folded.

"He looks pretty strong." Brendan whistled, stepping aside as he looked at the Machamp.

Dawn ignored him and started serving the patrons as Machamp successfully got them into a very long uniformed line. Not even an hour had passed before the majority of the treats on the table were disappearing quickly. Luckily, she kept a separate batch for her pokemon so they could eat when work was finished.

When the last patron was gone, the table was completely empty, leaving Brendan who was supervising with Machamp flabbergasted.

"If I knew everything would get taken up so quickly I would have gotten more!" Brendan cried out.

Dawn laughed. "To be honest, I didn't expect things to go so quickly. I expect that it would be like this or worse in the future due to the reporters that were here earlier." She told him as she started to clean up.

"I can help you clean up," He offered.

"It's alright," Dawn said, "this won't take that long." When she was finished packing up everything she fed her pokemon who were happy to receive the treats she made.

"So, what are you going to do after this?" Brendan asked, looking at her with reddened cheeks.

"I plan to travel all over the region and share my treats with people and pokemon," Dawn said excitedly.

"Travelling alone?" He asked, surprised.

"I'm not alone," Dawn replied, "I have my pokemon with me."

"Still, it can be dangerous," Brendan took a deep breath, "So please allow me to travel with you!"

Dawn was surprised at his request and raised an eyebrow. "Why do you want to travel with me? We barely know each other and don't you have champion duties are something like that?"

Brendan shook his head. "I am free until the Pokemon League starts. If anything, me traveling with you is like me doing a personal inspection of every city." He said, sweating profusely as Dawn watched him with a critical eye.

"Fine," Dawn accepted his offer, "I am sure you have another reason for wanting to travel with me but I guess it couldn't hurt. I haven't traveled with another person in a long time." She said before turning away and walked to her pokemon.

Brendan pumped a fist when Dawn turned away. He looked at her longingly as she interacted with pokemon. "By the end of this journey with you, I hope I can get to know you better and gather the courage to tell you I love you."
