A Whole Lot of You

Angie ran through the HQ door that was being held open by Catherine. "Walking feet, please," her mother said with an amused head shake as she watched the almost four year old exercise serious restraint to slow herself down.

"Daddy! We here!" She called while her mother caught up as they walked into Steve's office. Realizing all the offices were empty, she asked, "Where ever-body at, Mommy?"

"Daddy's not back yet. Everyone is out catching some bad guys, but they'll be here soon."

The little girl pulled herself onto Steve's desk chair and swivelled in a circle before stopping to face the laptop. "I work like Daddy." She grabbed a highlighter from the holder. "I have paper, please?"

Catherine smiled and grabbed a blank pad from the shelf. "Here you go, can you write your name for Daddy?" Tongue peeking out as she concentrated, Angie pushed a curl out of her face and donned an intense expression that was all her father's.

Minutes later the team entered the offices and she bolted out to greet them. When the hugs and kisses were done, she pointed to the tac vests they'd hung up upon entering. "I wear one?"

Danny laughed as Chin kneeled to her level. "They're a little too big for you, but how about if you come with me and get some peanut butter crackers from the break room?"

"Yes!" She took his hand and practically skipped alongside him while Steve and Catherine shared a look.

"Not gonna distract her for long," Danny confirmed, grinning as he pulled out his phone. Kono chuckled when the two returned shortly and Angie, wiping the crumbs from her face with a little hand, strode right up to her father and said, "I need one of dat so I can catch da bad guys with you." Once again pointing at the vests.

Lifting her for a hug, he said, "You have your badge to catch bad guys," and tapped the one she wore on her Mickey Mouse patterned shorts. She and DJ often wore their plastic badges when they visited HQ.

She touched it and nodded. "But you gots one of dat and Uncle Danno an' Uncle Chin, and Auntie Kono…" she listed. "What's it, Daddy?"

"It's a tac vest, and Uncle Chin was right, it's too big for you … here." He placed her down and moved to lift Kono's vest off the hook. Knowing his daughter, he held it and she immediately put her arms out as the vest enveloped her body. "See? You can't walk in it, it's too big, and too heavy, baby girl."

"I can have a little one?" Her eyes caught Steve's and held. "Pleeeease, Daddy?"

Danny smiled as he turned his phone to face his partner. He'd scrolled to a local store with an item that read, Kid's Tactical Cross Draw Vest. "We're wrapped for the day, let's go."

Catherine laughed. "Looks like you have the afternoon mapped out. I'm going to pick up DJ and drop him at Mom and Dad's before I go to the reception. She knelt to hug and kiss Angie. "Have fun, I'll see you later." Standing to peck Steve's lips, she added, "I'll be home by nine."

Angie tugged her father's hand. "I can have a tacked vess?"

Lifting her and heading for the door with his best friend bringing up the rear, Steve set off to outfit his not quite four year old daughter with an unmistakably proud grin. "Tac vest. It's short for Tactical. Can you say that?"

"Tac vess."

"Tac vest." He repeated slowly, his grin breaking into a full blown smile when Angie repeated, "Tac vest. I get one?"

"You can get one. Let's go."

"I'll be right with you guys," the fifty-ish man with high and tight cropped blond hair said as he came from the rear of the store at the door buzzer. "And little lady, sorry, ma'am," he looked more closely, then did a movie-quality double take. "Holy s… uh moly, McGarrett?"

Steve passed Angie to Danny as he reached to hug and back-slap the other man. "Brian Murray, what are you doing on Oahu?"

"This is my brother-in law's place. We got in yesterday and his one employee called out with a broken foot. So while he's touring my wife and kids around I said I'd keep an eye on the store today. It's been what? Fifteen years?"

"At least." He turned. "This is my partner, Danny Williams. Danny, Brian and I did a joint mission in Kabul."

The men exchanged greetings and Angie held out a hand. "Hi!"

"Hello there, honey."

"I'm Angie Lizbef McGarrett."

"And I have no doubt who your mommy is; you're her spitting image." Brian smiled at Steve. "I heard you ran a task force here. How's Catherine?"

Steve's eyes glinted. "She's great. She's got a work thing tonight so she's dropping our son at my in-law's."

"And my beautiful goddaughter here was at HQ this afternoon and decided she wanted a tac vest." He bounced her in his arms before placing her on her feet.

"I need one," Angie said seriously.

"You do, hmm?" Brian asked.

"To catch da bad guys with Daddy. Auntie Kono's don't fit." She held up both hands. "I's too big."

"I googled kids tac vests and the store came up," Danny explained.

"We'll then let's find you one, Miss Angie McGarrett. Because you are clearly your father's daughter."

"Yay!" She clapped and slid her hand into Steve's and they followed Brian through the store to the childrens' section.

Steve was on the sofa and Cammie moved to the door from her position at his feet when Catheirne let herself in just after 9 o'clock. "Hey, have fun?"

"Loads. Three droning speeches and rubber chicken, but we definitely raised some money for the initiative." She kissed him, pulled back, and kissed him again. "Is our three year old the proud owner of her very own tac vest?" She kicked off her shoes and sat next to him, leaning into his side after bending forward to kiss Cammie's snout.

He grinned. "She is. And so is DJ." He lifted an arm to wrap around her. "Guess who I met in the store? Brian Murray."

"How's he doing?"

"Good. He's here for two weeks with his wife and two kids. I invited them over for something on the grill. He's gonna call tomorrow and we can pick a date that works for you."

"Sounds good." She tapped his chest. "I know you have pictures. Let's see."

Grabbing his phone off the end table, he passed it to her and she scrolled through several shots of her daughter in the store wearing an Angie-sized tac vest and later, of both kids running around the deck wearing them. "Those actually look … pretty real."

He smiled. "600D nylon, tensile wear-resisting ability, carry handle, hook and loop in back to attach accessories and a velcro stick for a name tag."

Her brows rose. "Which you ordered."

He shrugged. "Didn't have to."

"Steve. You totally ordered them name tags."

"I gave them a couple of mine."

She laughed. "Of course you did." She pushed up and stood to check the kids. "Wait … is she sleeping in hers?"

"No." At her expression he laughed and acquiesced. "Not without trying, though."

"Ha! I knew it. Was there a negotiation involved?"

"She negotiated sleeping with the name tag under her pillow. DJ's idea, actually." His smile widened. "Negotiating at three - and coming up with a compromising solution at eight. Which should be a surprise to no one, they are your kids."

Catherine laughed as he rose to follow her upstairs. "Our kids own tac vests, Commander." She turned and patted his cheek before leaning up for a kiss. "I'd say that's a whole lot of you."
