A New Dawn: Remastered

Bella's Point of View

There wasn't a second that went by that I didn't regret moving to Forks. The weather was bleak, rainy and cold. All things that I had a strong distaste for. But I knew this was the right thing to do. Rene and Phil deserved their space and freedom to be happy. I was a pretty independent person, but my sister on the other hand was a lot like my mother, she was a handful. I loved her dearly but I couldn't for the life of me connect with my sister. I often felt like her mother.

Even now, as I was waiting at the bottom of the stairs, impatiently looking down at my watch, I had the urge to head on up and start helping her get ready. She was a year younger than me, but sometimes I felt she was much younger.

"Alida, come on we're going to be late for school." I called up the stairs with a sigh.

"Coming Bella." I heard her voice float down to me from the bathroom. I could still hear the faucet running and the sounds of vigorous brushing. In my opinion she was taking her time up there, stalling. We may be two very different people, but what we have in common is the fear of new places. You could call it just first day jitters.

We should have left ten minutes ago. I still wasn't completely sure where the school was, that's why I had wanted to leave early. But I should have known to remind Alida to set her alarm clock the night before.

To distract myself from the growing anxiety I scanned over the living room. Alida and I arrived over the weekend, it was pure chaos trying to get our rooms fixed up, I didn't really get a chance to settle in yet.

There were old pictures hanging on the walls, mostly of the time Charlie and Rene had been together. There were even some pictures of Alida and I as young children. Some of the pictures were a bit embarrassing, I would have to do some decorating when I got home from school. In general the house was pretty clean, I hadn't expected Charlie to keep this neat of a house. I guess I expected beer cans lying around and a bunch of half eaten microwaved lunches piled up in his kitchen. The typical divorced man. I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't the case in this house.

Alida's loud thudding down the stairs got my attention immediately. I put a look of open disapproval on my face as she approached me. Not only was she making us late, but she was also wearing some pretty revealing clothing.

"What? Is something wrong with my outfit?" She pouted, doing a little spin to show off.

I wasn't sure if it was intentional, but Alida always seemed to pick out the outfit that would bring unwanted attention. Alida had a little more curves to her body then mine, which honestly annoyed me a little. My baby sister shouldn't have bigger breasts than me, but it was a noticeable difference between us.

"No, no nothing is wrong with your clothes, can we please get going already." I said making my way to the door. My patience was already thin.

"Can I drive?" She begged, following after me using her famous big puppy-dog eyes. After years of her using that to get whatever she wanted, that stopped working on me years ago.

"Mom said we can take turns, I drive today and you can drive tomorrow." I said sliding into the driver's seat before she had a chance to argue.

She sulked as she got into the passenger side seat, folding her arms across her chest. "You always get to drive." She muttered.

That wasn't a lie, I usually was the one that drove us everywhere. My sister was a disaster on the road. I think the town of Forks will thank me for keeping my sister off the roads as much as physically possible.

"Cheer up," I sighed after the truck went into complete silence as I drove down the road. I casually looked out the window, taking note of all the rustic homes and quaint little shops. Forks had a very strong rural feel to it. Completely different from Phoenix.

"Whatever you say," She huffed, refusing to meet my gaze.

I knew exactly how to get her attention. "So, I wonder if there will be any cute guys at school." Even saying those words caused my cheeks to flush. I've tried a million different ways to prevent that from happening, but I couldn't manage to control my anatomy when the topic was about boys. It was such a foreign concept to me. Yes, I've dated a boy once, in like seventh grade. I was a child.

Alida glanced over at me, raising a brow. "You want to talk about boys?"

I nodded weakly, forcing to keep a nonchalant smile on my face. But even I realized that my face was an open book. And know one knew me better than my sister.

She laughed at my expression, shifting in her seat more to face me. "I'll believe that when hell freezes over."

"Okay, maybe not. But still, I need you to talk to me, the closer we get to the school the more nervous I get."

"I'm nervous too, but it's a good kind of nervous. We are going to walk in there, be the talk of the town for a week or two, then we will nicely fade into the background." Alida said with a calming tone.

I knew she was probably right, the first day is the hardest, we just have to get through today as gracefully as possible.

It wasn't long before we were pulling into the high school, I resisted giving a reaction to the building. But I was stunned at how small it was. The parking lot was almost completely full, we ended up parking at the very back, right next to a shiny, silver Volvo.

"Hey, this is probably the nicest car in the lot, don't you think we should park somewhere else?" Alida said, glancing at the Volvo with curiosity.

"This is fine, it's not like I'm going to hit it." I shrugged, and carefully got out, trying to not let my door swing too wide.

"You better not so much as breathe on it Bella, I'm sure the jerk who can afford this would sue us just for standing too close." Alida said, rolling her eyes as the two of us walked around the car and in the direction of the school entrance.

I couldn't help but laugh at the idea of that. You wouldn't expect to find people like that here in Forks. It was such a small town and that Volvo stuck out among the over cars. I wonder who drove it. It surely had to belong to a teacher, no parent would let their kid drive a car like this to school.

Alida excitedly looked around, meeting each piercing stare that turned in her direction with the biggest smile she could possibly muster. There wasn't a single person in the parking lot that wasn't watching us closely. You would have thought we were world famous actresses, showing up to the school and walking down a red carpet.

Alida began to gravitate towards the picnic table area that sat just outside the doors. "We have like ten minutes before class starts, I don't know why you were in such a rush to leave." She whined, taking a seat.

"Calm down, I'll go to the office and get our schedule." I said with a heavy sigh.

I could spend time explaining to her why arriving at school on time was the responsible thing to do. But we both knew that would be a waste of breath. Alida and I have very different definitions of responsibility.

"I'll wait for you right here." She said pointing to the picnic table that she had sat down on.

I nodded, and patted her head before taking off to the office.

You could plainly hear Alida grumble under her breath and I turned around at just the right time, to see she was attempting to fix her hair. I would probably pay for that later.

Entering the school was like taking a step back in time. Everything looked pretty old and outdated. I wouldn't be surprised if they still had dial-up. The smell was odd as well, it had a very pungent odor of wet, rotting wood.

My first impressions weren't very high, I really didn't want to be in this building any longer than I needed to so I quickly got our schedule from the front desk woman, and went back outside to find a group of boys was in a circle around her, but she looked at all of them with no interest. Alida had pretty high standards when it came to boys, at least that's what she wanted everything to think.

I knew better. It would most likely take a few sweet words to get my sister swooning.

As I approached I noticed the boys eyeing at me now. They kept pleasant looks on their faces. But I could see through all the deceptions.

"This must be your sister," The one boy greeted me with a wide smile and an outstretched hand. "I'm Mike. Newton. And you are?"

I shifted our schedules in my other hand to take his and give it a timid hand shake. "Bella Swan. Nice to meet you."

"It was nice meeting you all, we need to g find our lockers." Alida said cutting in between Mike and I. She linked arms with me and had me pulled into the school in a matter of seconds. I turned back to glance at the group one more time. Their expressions were a mix between shock and disappointment.

"Thanks." I chuckled as we safely made it to my locker, we looked at our schedules, comparing them closely. We had almost all the same classes except for three. My sister is a year behind me, but she took advanced courses. She was really smart. Her locker would have been next to mine if she was in the same grade as me. She would have to find her locker further down the hall.

"No problem, I'm really kind of disappointed, I thought there would be at least one hot guy here. This is just sad." Alida sighed, folding her arms across her chest.

I laughed, and patted her shoulder. "I bet there will be some, we haven't even made it the whole way through the school."

Was boys the only thing on this girl's mind?

"Well I better go find my locker, I'll meet up with you in a little bit." She said with a wave as she began down the hall. She obviously wasn't paying attention, because almost instantly she went running into someone. The force of the impact only seemed to affect Alida, she nearly fell back on her bottom, but the strange had caught her.

"Hey, watch where you're going." Alida muttered with a glare at the stranger, but as she got a closer look at him her jaws dropped.

He was the most beautiful man I had ever seen, so perfect, with bronze, messy curls and eyes that were so strange, I'd never seen eyes like this. They were a brilliant topaz. Surely those had to be colored contacts.

"I'm so sorry, I didn't see you." The boy said with a voice that made me want to melt.

Alida's face instantly flushed pink."Well I think you at least owe me the pleasure of knowing the name of the man that nearly trampled me over"

Amusement danced in the stranger's eyes as he looked at my sister, however he quickly subdued his emotions, pulling a mask of disinterest on his face. "Edward, Edward Cullen." He said sticking his hand out to her.

A pang of jealousy hit me as they both took hands, and my stomach clenched as they froze at each other's touch, and let their hands drop.

"I'm Alida, and this is my sister Bella." Alida said looking at me with a smile, then looked back to Edward.

Edward remained neutral throughout Alida's introduction, but I could see Edward glancing between the two of us with increasing frustration. I wasn't sure if he was annoyed with getting sidetracked from class, or if he just isn't interested in knowing either one of us. The thought of that sent a jarring stab to my chest.

"It was nice meeting the both of you." Edward bowed his head, before swiftly turning his back to us and pretty much racing down the hall to get away. That was a first. Alida had never managed to cause a man to run away from her. I wonder if this had wounded her pride at all.

Alida turned back at me, her face red.

"He was really… interesting… wasn't he?" She asked, appearing to be in a daze, as she leaned against the lockers.

I nodded, attempting to hide my envy. Alida had been able to speak to Edward. It came out effortless for her. He was just so dazzling, I doubt I would have the strength to form a complete sentence to the guy.

"Come on, let's find your locker." I said with a weak smile, and pulled her in the direction of the lockers.

I'm not sure what I was feeling after meeting Edward, but for some reason I didn't feel comfortable with Alida having a crush on him. As weird as that might be, I never felt like this with her other crushes, what was different about Edward, other than him being the most perfect guy in the world.

Edward's Pov

The Swan girls, it was so strange, I couldn't read either of their thoughts. I had heard the news last week that we would be getting two new students. I also knew it was Charlie Swan's daughter. But I couldn't anticipate the complete silence I experienced when I was close to either one of them. I couldn't put my finger on it, but there was something about Bella and Alida that fascinated me.

I would have to warn my family about them. Maybe we would skip lunch for today and regroup. Having two people in school that I can't use my powers against was a moderate risk. Could this mean that they are immune to Rosalie and Jasper's abilities as well? We would have to find out this crucial information.

As I walked down the hallways to my class Alida and Bella was the only thing I seemed to be able to think about as much as this confused me. What were two humans to me?

Thank you for taking the time to read my remastered version to A New Dawn. As you can see a lot was added and modified. I'll be attempting to update this bi-weekly, because I'll be remastering all my stories between Fan-Fiction and Fiction-Press.
