drop everything now

meet me in the pouring rain

kiss me on the sidewalk

take away the pain

'cause I see, sparks fly, whenever you smile

"Okay, what the heck is going on," Lizzie cried at the car in front of her coming to a halt. It was only five in the afternoon and her and William Darcy were on their way to their dinner reservations.

"It's just some traffic, I'm sure it's nothing," Will replied, trying to look around the car in front of him. He was driving the two and it seemed his tallness wasn't doing him much good. All he could see were several cars in front of his own also stopped. In fact, the traffic wasn't moving even a tiny bit. Cars were bumper to bumper, all headed across the bridge to the city. The sun was about to set and the sky was actually quite beautiful as the blue melted into bright oranges and yellows, all reflected over the clear water that filled the bay. Lizzie looked at him skeptically, she too could see the traffic didn't look like it'd be moving any time soon.

"Agh!" Lizzie let out another frustrated groan as the cars ahead of them each shut off their engine, all resigning to the disheartening knowledge they would be stuck for a while. Willtoo shut his own engine off, rolling down the windows to let in a cool breeze.

"Lizzie," Will said calmly, turning to her. With a sigh, she turned to him and smiled. "If we don't make it, we don't make it. It's not that big a deal."

"But I was really looking forward to it. I mean, it's our first year together, I wanted it to be special, you know?"

"It already is." Will said, taking her hands in his and staring deeply into her eyes, long enough to cause a blush to creep up her neck. She was used to this kind of stuff, it seemed like everyday, he was finding new moments in time to remind her how much he loved her and how happy he was with her. Lizzie melted into pure happiness whenever he said something so sweet and reassuring to her. She continued to blush, grinning and looking for something to distract herself from having to look at him and the sincerity in his eyes. She found she was still struggling to communicate with people, and experiencing so much pure joy and unbridled happiness at once might cause her to explode, she was sure of it, and therefore, she found her hands immediately reaching to play with his tie. Despite the middle console separating the two, it seemed they couldn't be closer. Will brought his hands to her face, slightly nudging her chin up forcing her to meet his eyes. She used the tie to pull his face to her. No matter how many times they kissed, the butterflies were constantly there, fluttering around in her chest. Her fingers still held tightly to the tie as his hands continued to trace invisible circles onto her cheek. The two pulled inches apart to take a breath. With a blissful sigh and a satisfied smile, Lizzie finally looked into Will's eyes, communicating everything she found so difficult to speak.

"I love you too," Will whispered back, smiling as well. Lizzie sat back, still playing with the end of Will's tie and remembering those many months ago. A time when the sight of a crooked bow tie only infuriated her. She cringed at the memory of the terrible way she behaved, the misjudgement and pride she showed towards him, when all he did was see her and love her. Sure, he was more than a bit unbearable at the time, but she had been too. Every so often she'd hear an echo in the back of her mind, typically at the most inconvenient times, that would remind her of the words she had spoken. The last man in the world…

"What are you thinking about?" Will asked, noting the silence and weird facial expressions Lizzie was making.

In a mocking tone, she replied, "you are the last man who I could ever fall in love with." Will only smiled at the remembrance of a time before they truly understood each other.

"What the heck?" Lizzie nudged him. "That's your response to me claiming I could never love you?"

"No, I'm remembering my stupid choice to call your family an embarrassment while professing my love." he playfully nudged her back and she looked at him, scrunching her nose up at the embarrassing snapshot of their history. The two faced the windshield, gazing out over the water as night began to settle in. Both were lost in thought, running over the events of the last year and a half. The highs and lows of their growing relationship. Slowly, their eyes met again and Will was again overtaken by the urge to kiss her. She was his and he was hers. No matter what the past was, in the here and now, they were each other's, and at that, Will couldn't contain himself, he pulled Lizzie to him again. He could feel her mouth turn up again into a smile as their lips met. No matter how many times she reminded him that she had been so wrong that day, he loved the reminder her soft lips gave him.

"Lizzie Bennet," He whispered, burying his hands in her hair and pulling away slightly. The two had their foreheads together, soaking in the moment.

" Yes?" She looked down at his tie again. It seemed whenever she was overcome, adjusting his tie was the perfect release of pent up emotion. It was almost like an anchor, keeping the two of them connected.

"I love you."

"I know-"

"No, I mean I love you. With my entire body and soul, forever and always, love you." His voice took on a rougher tone, he seemed to struggle to get the words out. He wasn't looking at her, his lips were by her ear and his eyes were closed.

"William Darcy," She began pulling back to look at him. "I love you." despite her nervousness, she looked at him again, she saw the mixture of emotions in his eyes and the wheels turning as he tried to figure out how to respond.

In the silence, a pitter-patter began hitting the car. The sky seemed to open and rain began pouring down, through the open windows that had once been letting in a nice breeze. Their concentration broke. Will tried to get the car started and the windows rolled up but in his haste, he hit the open top button instead. He tried to jam the close button, but it was no use. The top would have to open all the way before it could reverse the mechanism and shut again.

"Perfect." Will said as the roof slowly opened, letting the rain fall onto his leather seats. He gave Lizzie an apologetic look and found her giggling. Her hair was falling limp from the water but her eyes sparkled even in the light of traffic headlights. Finally, the top reversed and was closing up again, but at that point, the two were pretty much soaked through. Lizzie's dress clung to her skin and Darcy's white shirt beneath his dress coat was rendered see-through, which Lizzie was not quite opposed to but nevertheless, they were both fairly uncomfortable. With the top closed, the two assessed the situation. Traffic was still stopped and the two felt squishy. Lizzie put her head in her hands, concealing her smile at Darcy's fumbling around to get the windows shut and his pointed decision to not look at her after. Now it was his turn to blush and make awkward faces, although he knew she wasn't mad, he couldn't help looking away. "Sorry."

Lizzie, realizing he was so upset, grabbed his now damp tie. "It was just a little water," She said, reassuring him with a smile that she was surprised but not upset. After a beat, he let out a sigh.

"Well Lizzie, I was going to wait until after dinner so that I could do this properly, but seeing as we're soaked through and the cars have yet to part, I guess now is as good a time as any." Will opened his car door and got out, surprising Lizzie yet again. She turned to her side and moved to get out too, he had run around to her side and urged her to sit back down. The rain continued to pour, but he no longer minded. He had spent days planning this and while he hadn't ever planned to do it in the middle of traffic (or a rainstorm), he found he couldn't wait a second longer. He knelt, reaching for her hand. Her own mouth fell open, she was absolutely overcome as Will, raindrops continuing to fall, pulled a black velvet box from his pocket.

"From nearly the moment I met you, I loved you and I knew that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with you. You know me better than I know myself. You've seen me at my worst, and yet, you've given me the chance to prove over and over to you that I can be better." Will paused and sucked in a breath. He seemed to stumble over his rehearsed words, he knew them by heart, and yet he found himself unable to recall anything but the urge to shout her beauty from the top of the empire state building. Lizzie leaned out of the car to kiss him. The two, lips together, stood as lightning flashed and thunder roared. The rain only seemed to fall harder, but neither seemed to take notice. Lizzie's hands clung to Will's shirt and his hands were tangled in her hair. Realizing he still needed to ask the question, Will reluctantly pulled back. Taking both her hands, he continued. "I am better because of you Lizzie. Will you marry me?" The rain poured on, and Lizzie, unable to contain herself, began to cry. Tears of joy mixed in with the rain water.

She managed a "Yes"and she watched as he slipped the ring on her finger. It was at this moment, he picked her up and spun her around. The two had been in the far right lane and he made sure to pull her onto the sidewalk. Neither could feel the damp fabric or even think about the possibility of sickness from dancing in the cold rainwater. No, the only thought in the minds of the couple, was the bliss of a happy future spent in each other's arms.
