Author here. Ok, so I just wanted to say that I didn't actually think I was going to write this because self-inserts = cringe, but since a Redditor posted how would you survive being teleported in Overlord this is being made from that response. I'm not going to post a link to it since I'm not sure about the rules for the website are. If you want to see the Reddit post just dm me. If you find it or head there you could see and read my response and where the story will get to but of course spoilers. I wrote so much of it that it became the template of the beginning of a fanfiction story. Well, a realistic how would I survive if I got transported there. If you bear with me I believe this can be pretty entertaining, good food for thought if you get transported, or at least to laugh at me and my bad writing. In the end, I hope you enjoy it.

Chapter 1 - A Strangers Arrival.

The year is 2021, the world is currently suffering from a global pandemic, Earth is dying and on fire, oceans are filled with plastic, the air is getting more poisonous, police and the public trust is practically nonexistent, mass shootings are broadcasted what feels to be every other day, foreign countries are bombing each other, governments acknowledge possible U. . and World War III may be around the corner. Yet somehow that didn't bother a young man named Nicholas James Hernandez although he preferred to be called Nick. This was due to him being an easy-going guy all his life, not being easy to rile up because of his passive kind nature but also due to ignorance about the world and other people's problems. Nick was a retail cashier always working full time and any day he can. When the pandemic hit he was happy to take on many shifts for the extra money but realized how people, well customers, don't value his safety not taking the precautions to not infect him or others. Still, he had to make money. He wasn't a corporate slave but that's just how the world works, you need money to live in it. Nick was semi-educated, he completed high school but didn't attend college or university because he couldn't afford it, didn't know what he wanted to do, and didn't want to be in debt to some campus for a job that isn't guaranteed. Nor was he healthy by any means he was in a country which is famously named as the 'Most Obese Country in the World' and indeed contributed to that stereotype. His eyesight is so terrible he has to wear glasses 24/7 other than sleeping or showering. Yet he felt like he didn't have a single worry in the world, he had good brothers, a great sister, and a fantastic mother. The eldest sister married a man with a high position in a construction company. They have three boys and a daughter living in a rich area in a big house. The eldest brother has been working in the medical field for years and working to become a doctor. The second brother is in a field of computer science working for a big tech company and found a partner to live his rest of their lives with. A mother who raised them all by herself with good virtues, with unfortunately no help from the husband. This was not due to him choosing not to be there of his own will, but due to his passing of a car collision from a drunk driver. Nick knew he was the black sheep of the family too. Being the youngest and not being as successful as them, but they still loved him and he loved them. With family like this and being the fun uncle, how could he not feel the way he is and be happy.

Nick after completed his eight-hour shift from the store, set the alarm, locked it up, plugging in his wired earphones, and started walking home like any other day. The dusk sky was a beautiful orange-purple, the air was cool and the wind blew nicely. He did not drive home but walked as always. This was due to his home and the store being a close distance. He could choose a three to six-minute drive from his home or about a twenty-minute walk depending on how many trains passed. Some would complain about walking from work to home and vice versa, but this to him was absolutely fine. He was recently started listening to fan-made audiobooks of his favorite series Overlord as he walked. He came across it by watching the anime series of it as it was being released and fell in love with every second of it. He saw and loved the spinoff series that was a collision of other shows he watched. He bought the physical books, digital books, digital manga, digital spinoffs mangas, on his phone just so he could support the author. He even spent a good amount of money on the Mass of the Dead game and he would die before discussing how much money he sank into that game. Unfortunately, the English version of the game that he loved to play servers shut down not that long after the release. He wanted to cry and knew a bit of what the fictional character Momonga felt like when the game servers were closing. Still, he loved the series and was ecstatic finding out season four and a movie was coming out. He couldn't wait to see what was next and the flawless CGI of Madhouse. So he decided to start getting into the light novels.

When he reached home he undressed and immediately when into the shower listening to some music most being anime but some being other songs made by the composer of the anime ones. He knew he was a weeb he even started to learn Japanese slowly just so he could play Mass of the Dead again. How sad he thought to himself. Oh well, he sang to the lyrics of the songs as he cleaned himself thinking of What Ifs to many shows he watched. Once finished and dried he dressed in casual pajama attire for relaxing and sleeping at home, he got on his computer browsing the internet forums for memes and other silly time distractions. Forums, food, brushing teeth, games, as he lets the time fly by. Passing midnight getting ready to go to bed he got up to use the restroom taking his phone off the charger with him to watch videos about 3-D printing since YouTube won't stop recommending them to him even though he watched only one video. After finishing his business and cleaning his hands. He goes to step out of the restroom and darkness...

He blinked and open his eyes to see he was no longer in his home but on the sidewalk of some town or city in the middle of a star-filled night. His eyes had to adjust to the sudden shift to the darkness of the area compared to the lights in his home. Panic ran through his mind. "Oh my God! What the hell! Where the fuck am I!? Is this actually happening!?" Nick grabs his phone from his pocket calling his Mom. Nothing. His brothers. Nothing. Sister. Nothing. 911. Nothing. Tried the internet. Nothing. Seeing No bars or signal in the top corner. The denial came following after he closed his eyes. "No, no it's just a dream. A livid dream just got to wake up." Pinching himself to go back home. Nothing but a stinging feeling on his arm. Now pitching himself harder. Nothing happens but now it got very sore on his left arm. "What's he doing? Let's just go home, honey." A couple in each other arms walking past Nick swiftly looking at him like he was a crazy homeless man. Although that is partially correct. Holding back the tears from uselessly hurting himself and being abducted from his home. "Without a charger I'm may need it later and can't just wase any power." He thought to himself. Nick turns his phone on power mode and shuts it off. Step by step he starts walking the streets slowly on his bare feet.

While the time is passed midnight there was still activity in the city. If he wasn't teleported from his home Nick would be impressed with his surroundings. Nick originally thought he was sent back in time, especially seeing some horse-drawn wagons and the architecture of the buildings. The people's clothing looked like from medieval Europe and some people carried weapons such as swords, shields, bows, spears, and various others. Some wore metal plating, leather, or a mix of both. It looked like as he was seeing people going or coming from a crossplay convention as he walked the cold streets of this city he began noticing strange and stranger things. First was the style of clothing the people wore. From time to time he overheard a few people speaking words like a warrior, kingdoms, magic, monsters, holy order, and other such phrases. Next, he noticed that not all the light sources in the area were the same. There were torches, oil-based lanterns, but mainly some had crystal admitting light from a glass container. The ones with crystals seemed to be for business or perhaps official buildings. Nothing here looked like it was powered by electricity or gas in the city. All the signs and words were in a foreign language but yet everyone spoke perfect English. "I can't believe it." He thought only to himself. He had to be sure he wasn't just teleported to some fantasy world. "How do you approach someone about this?" "Welp just got to ask directly.". Nicks looks at the people around him, everyone around seems armed or ready to attack if being screwed with. He had to anyone that didn't look intimidating or look like guards. He didn't want to be mugged or killed. The guards may throw him in some jail cell thinking I snuck into the city as a spy, I was strung up or was crazy. Especially when a few people will start to report him for being suspicious late at night. Nick began to approach all the 'normal' looking people. Surprising to everyone that this stranger would talk to them. They brushed him away thinking he was either crazy drunk, drugged up, screwing with them, or trying to get money off them. Some threatened to call the guards other left or brushed him aside. Just a weirdo walking in his nightwear in public. What feels like hours nearly giving up he tries one last person he sees while walking in this cruel city. He would try one more time. This last person was on the other side of the street. Jogging to them, this sudden man that approached the lady in the night startles her like most other citizens before her.

Lizzie Bareare is an elderly woman with a face full of wrinkles and pure white, shoulder-length hair. She doesn't normally stay up at these hours but after finishing her work at her shop was invited by Theo Rakheshir to come over to the Adventuring Guild to not only catch up but help with some new studies fields of magical arts. It was nothing romantic just a platonic friendship. She changed from her dirty clothes into something a bit more casual and went. Of course, him being a friend, fellow colleague, and a magic-user herself this was a good way to gain new insights into the topic. With them getting into the new studies this made them lose track of time. Lizzie would depart with Theo offering a ride or escort but she declined not to. She needed the walk to keep these old bones in check and she is no chump magic caster. Dam she let time fly by too much, she had no doubt Nfirea would be worried about her and it would be time to open shop in from what she can tell from the position of the moon at least five hours. The night seemed no stranger than the last but that was soon to change. More than halfway there turning a corner something did catch her attention. Ahead at the end of the street, she sees an obese man probably mid-twenties. What's strange is not only has she never seen this person at night but of course, she's not often this late, but that he's dressed like he was about to go to bed. He was also wearing glasses, while glasses are not an alien concept it's strange to see someone wearing them when not reading documents but as they were now. They seem to be looking around nervously as if they looking for someone. She sighs and just moves on she already near her shop which is also their home. As she is approaching the end of the street that man starts jogging to get in front of her. She is put on guard by this man suddenly getting in her path.

A 6'5 ft fat man begins talking to her in a distressed voice. "Please mam, I've been trying to get help, but no one is taking me seriously or thinks I'm some crazy homeless drugged-up guy. Please can you tell me what city is this?". This surprised her it's a trick, a ridiculous question how would they not know where they are. This guy showing up in front of her suddenly and asking such a thing. She just wanted to leave him and move on with her night she would scream for the guards or cast [Lightning] if he tries to do something. Yet she can see this big heavy man actually started tearing up, he is genuinely distressed. "Um... Well... The city is called E-Rantel." The old woman answered distrustfully. She saw the big man before her go into shock from hearing that. She thought his eyes would pop out of his skull and his wide mouth hit the floor. Did he actually not know? "This city is E-Rantel the one owned by a king that has a daughter called 'The Golden Princess'?" He said gaining more composure but still distressed. "Yes that is the right one. Why would you not know where you were? What happened?" Dammit she just realized she shouldn't have asked that after all she really wanted to get home. It was just a courteous reflex of a question and didn't want the conversation to continue. Still, she was a bit curious as to why he would not know and what caused him to be here in the dark. The big man before her actually started crying like some child who got hurt playing right in front of her. "I was. I was at home. Whe. When I just left th. The restroom. And. Suddenly I. I was on the cros. Crosswalk in this city.".

He was not a good-looking crier his eyes were red, snot was coming out his nose it was a pitiful sight. Could this actually be happening? Is this a joke? He had to be lying that was the most ridiculous story she has ever been told. He must have just been kicked out of his home but why lie that badly. If he was, surely he would have friends he could crash with. Why tell such a ridiculous lie? She stares him down now looking at him closely the clothes were clean like never seen a stain in their life. The materials look in great condition and really well made. She couldn't tell what kind of material the shorts were but it was shiny and dark green. She would guess that this man was probably nobility, but why would he be out here? If what he said was a lie then... Yes, his situation started to make sense now. If he was a noble he probably has been disowned and left here. Nobles have high pride and would rather lie and deny truth if it doesn't suit their worldview. Making such a lie is easier than saying they been written off by his family. It would explain why he is so fat, why use the princess as a reference, and why he is dressed as he is. The man in front of him stopped crying but still having trouble talking from that breakdown. "Would. Would you mi. Mind helpin. Helping me.". She just couldn't believe he said that to her. Is he really that desperate? She thinks about just saying no after all it's not her problem she doesn't owe him anything. She's not a foolish or completely compassionate lady either. She was watching his face and she didn't think he was lying about the help but is obviously doubtful about his story. She may be able to gain favor with this noble. If he would end up being accepted back into his family then he would owe her. That can be very helpful. "Alright." She then starts walking away. She turns around and sees the man still in the same spot."Well are you going to come or not?". The man shoots up in a better position and says "Thank you." Begining to follow her. "Ya ya..." Waving what he said away.

Nick can only think back to what just happened as they were walking to some unknown destination. He approaches believe like the others she will laugh, turn him away, and or threaten to call the guards. What she did surprised him three times over, not only did she acknowledge him, told him where he was, but also confirmed he was in a fictional city. Of course, he realized what city that was from but had to confirm what he heard. Not only did she confirm the city but the reality of it is that one. He was starting to get control of himself to not be as scared of this whole situation but that when out the window when she asked him "Why would you not know? What happened?" She, she was talking to him like an actual person and not like some nuisance or thing. He was like a dam and it just broke bringing all the emotions out. She was the nicest and only real person that would give him the time of day. He confessed about what happened to him. She just listened to him. He would follow it up by asking for help but didn't actually think it would go anywhere. He was shocked when she said "Alright." He couldn't even move from that episode and the willingness to help. An angel. That is who this lady is, an angel in a city that was full of shit.

When they arrived at their destination what he thought it was just her home. Nick was just too tired to comprehend his surroundings, his brain was fried, his eyes burning, and he just needs to sleep for a century. She led him to a spare guest bedroom that was less of a bedroom and more of a storage unit. It did have a bed that was kinda accessible but boxes and bottles of various sizes and shapes in the way in here too. "You sleep here, alright?" "Yes, mam." "The restroom is right at the end of this hall last door of the left, ok?" "Understood." "Alright now go to sleep." She closed the door leaving Nick in the room. He spared no time getting in bed moving some boxes to squeeze past and lay down. Thinking to himself hopefully, it's just a dream. Lizzie closed the door but didn't immediately leave the area. She waited nearby on a stepping stool just in case he would try something but all she heard was the rustling of boxes followed by a loud thump from the room. Probably him dropping into bed. Silence. After waiting up for at least ten minutes she checked the building doors making sure everything was locked and went upstairs. She first checked Nfirea's room and saw him sleeping in bed. Seeing him sleeping soundly she went to her own room with the same idea.

"Wake up! I don't have any slackers in this building." Nick got up immediately and squeeze by the storage items following her. Not that long after following her, he would say "Um, sorry about what you saw last night, I was in a terrible spot. I didn't even tell you my name but just threw all my baggage at you instead, even though we're strangers. Let me correct that, my name is Nicholas James Hernandez. I prefer to be called Nick." Right, he didn't even say who he was but just cried like a child in front of her. "My name is Lizzie Bareare, I'm the owner of this shop." Huh, she couldn't recall any noble-sounding name like that but probably from the Holy Kingdom, they tend to have a three-part name. She was studying him to see if he would react to knowing who he was talking to after all she is quite famous in E-Rantel. "Oh, we're at your shop. Um, thank you again for helping me." His face looked a lot softer more genuine with sunlight on him and his small smile. Did... did he actually not know? Is she not as popular among the noble community as she thought or did he simply just not know who she was? "Ya, no problem. If you want to stay you will have to work hard. I'm going to have you start cleaning the store. Can you do that?" She said studying him. "Um yes, if I'm fine with that." She was actually surprised to hear him say that. She was expecting him to act more proud and not say he shouldn't have to be doing such menial tasks and such are beneath him. She would have of course sorted him out or kicked him out also telling him th- now it seems he is looking around for something. "Where are the -" Having a good idea of what he is looking for she points to a corner of the room to the objects. In that corner is a wooden broom with straw at its end with some bent, a feather duster that has a hole in it the hole has a string that is holding it one a nail on the wall, and next to them is a wooden empty bucket with a darkish gray rag in it. "Oh, I see." He, he was being serious. He was actually grabbing the broom and started sweeping with no complaint. Whatever, she will talk to him later and ask who he is properly. She has work to do of her own and leaves him cleaning her store.

Nick was jolted into waking by a powerful lung of an old lady. He was hoping he would see a familiar ceiling when he woke up. He still felt a bit tired but was not about to complain about more rest to the lady who actually helped him. He just realized that he didn't even know her name. So he decided to properly introduce himself and thank her. When told he was going to be put to work that was not surprising he knew if he wanted help he needs to pull his weight. When told to clean and saw the tools he was going to be working with he instantly thought of tv how is a fantasy/medieval era movie or shows you see people cleaning with wacky messed up brooms or on their knees mopping. Yea that was the tools he was going to be working with and knew he was going to hate mopping. He had a few complaints though, why does the broom look so cheap? Is it sanitary to even touch that rag? Could we at least eat breakfast first? Were you unable to afford a mop? Are mops not even invented? Wait are toilets? Oh no. He could only sigh to himself and go oh well. She left him alone and he put in a great effort in clearing her store of stains, dirt, and dust. Now with him being alone with his thoughts, he can start thinking about his situation. Ok, so I'm in the New World of Overlord. Not sure if that's good news or bad news to be brought to a show you love. Do I try to get in contact with Momonga? Wait does he even exist if I'm here now? Do I have any powers, abilities, or talents? This is so much information to take in. I need to check my phone for information but now is not a good time. While I'm in a shop and could go into the back without raising an eyebrow to customers I don't want to appear to Lizzie that I'm a slacker and just trying to take a break. Nor do I want to pull it out if at the moment and have to explain it if I get seen with it. Gonna have to test the part of the powers later. "What the hell am I actually thinking? Overlord and powers really?" he muttered to himself. Maybe he misheard her, confused his dreams from reality, or just she said what he wanted to hear. With a bit of hopeful denial sparking, if somehow Lizzie mistook him and this isn't Overlord's world Nick could laugh at a lat- wait a minute.

He couldn't believe who he saw. It was a young boy, and they can in from upstairs of the store with an empty box and approached Lizzie. This is a young boy with short, bowl-cut blonde hair that covers half his face. He is dressed in ragged work clothes and Nick seeing Lizzie now also dressed up in work clothes as well. Seeing them both together even he can recognize the fictional characters from their designs. He couldn't believe he just realized who she was. To be fair she was not in her work attire when they met, also the place was dark when they entered and it's a real 3-D building and not a 2-D image of course that showed a few times and had little to do with the story. Yet now he could recognize them right away. What he saw there was no mistaking that. The young man turned to her "Grandma who is this?" "Oh. This is Nick he'll be helping around the store." She replied. "Um yes. Hello, as your grandmother just said I'm Nick and you would you be?" Extending his arm in a handshake. Nick already knew who it was it was just a common curiosity to ask but he still wanted it to be confirmed. "I'm Nfirea, I help run this store and I assist in my grandma's brewery.". Shifting the box under heath one of his arm and accepting the handshake. With that, any hope remaining shrank so small that it imploded into a black hole where it could never escape. Nick's mind could only think one thing.

"Fuck my life.".
