Walking down the stairs of the ball room behind her grandfather, she could feel more than see all the eyes on her. It was the season again and it was her turn now.

The season, oh how she hated it. Every year all the girls that turned eighteen should find a suitable husband for marriage as a girl only lasted three seasons before she is considered non- suitable for any man.

The men on the other hand were allowed to marry a girl at whatever age they desired. The hungry mama's of the kingdom would look for available man for their daughter.

Kai had no intension of marrying just yet but she did not have any other choice. Her grandfather had told her to catch the eye of the men with whom he could benefit and increase his business.

The royal ball marks the beginning of the season and the end of it. Many other balls are conducted between the two royal ball.

This time there were double celebration. The mark of the beginning of the season and the fact that the crown prince Hiro Granger returned from his studies abroad.

"Now listen carefully, do not waste your time with any fool" Voltaire whispered in her ear. "Of course" she said and walked away from him.

Walking around she could hear the faint whispering of how she is going to be the main competition of their daughter. She just rolled her eyes and grabbed a drink from the waiter passing by.

"Well if this isn't the dutchess herself" a voice which Kai knew all too well said from behind her. "And if this isn't the ever obnoxious marquis Tala" she said smiling slightly.

"Tell me which girl here caught you eyes" she asked keeping the glass down on the table. "Or I can show you" Tala said raising his arm and asking her to walk with him. Hooking her elbow through his they walked towards the centre of the ball room.

"You see that one" Tala said pointing towards a girl with green-ish hair. "You mean marquis claude" Kai said. "You know her" Tala asked looking at Kai. "She was in the same flowering class as me" Kai said. " Well what do you know about her" Tala asked eager to know everything about the girl who caught his eyes.

"Well she is a year older than me and that she likes roses and her favourite colour is yellow. She also likes to dance" Kai said to her childhood friend. "Well in that case I am going to ask her to dance" Tala said smirking. "Good luck then" Kai said chuckling and went in the opposite direction.

Walking around the room aimlessly she saw a face she hated more than anything in this world. She turned around hoping she was not seen but luck was not on her side.

"Dutchess Kai, finally. I was wondering when you were going to show up" said the voice behind her in fake politeness that she could clearly hear. "I think you should pay more attention to the announcer next time Miss Willis" Kai said half jokingly.

"Maria, please dutchess" She said laughing lightly. "Kai then and how is Lord Willis now" Kai said. "Father is fine now, thank you for your concern" Maria said.

"So how many enteries do you have in your dance card then" Maria said knowing full well that Kai hated dancing. "Well I do not intend on dancing tonight" Kai said wishing nothing but to kill the girl in front of her.

She and Maria had never gotten together. Maria always wanted to be the centre of the universe but never wanted to d any hard work. She from starting said that she was too beautiful to do any work. It was true that she was beautiful. She had green eyes and brown hair and a perfect figure but she always bullied other girls for not being slim enough.

Kai on the other hand got all the attention she never asked for. She without trying stood out in the crowd, with her two toned hair and crimson eyes. She was also very slim but not in an unhealthy way.

Maria always hated that and as they grew up the hate become jealously and she wanted to do everything that Kai did.

If someone complimented Kai's dress, Maria would go to the store to buy the exactly same piece or would ruin her dress. Kai had lost many dresses because of that reason alone.

The talk between the two rivals stopped when Emperor Bruce asked for everyone's attention. "I am very happy to announce the beginning of the new season and the return of my son and crown prince Hiro from his studies" Bruce said. Just then a man with blue hair and brown eyes came forward.

Kai admitted to herself that the crown prince was handsome looking man and by his appearance was no older than 20. Looking around she could see the mama's plotting to set their daughter with the prince. Turning her face towards Maria, Kai knew that she was gonna go after the prince.

"It's good to be home and I hope I will get to know all of you soon" Hiro said snapping Kai's attention back to him. Soon the chatter began again but this time she could see many girls and mama's around the crown prince.

"Excuse me dutchess but this will not be polite if I don't introduce myself to the prince" Maria said walking towards the poor prince who was trying to not panic. Kai watched the scene unfold in front of her. She saw the crowd becoming bigger slowly around the prince. She was brought out her thoughts with yet another annoying voice calling her. "Dutchess Kai, it is a pleasure meeting you here" the voice said. "It's nice meeting you here as well Lord Brrokhil" Kai said turning around.

Lord Otis Brookhil was a man in his early fourties with crooked tooth and ugly face. He had been fascinated by Kai since she was a mere girl and her grandfather never minded as Brookhils were rich and influential.

"Would you give me the pleasure of dancing with you tonight" he asked smiling and showing his crooked teeth. Kai threw up a little in her mouth at the thought of the man in front of her touching her.

"I have to decline the offer as I do not intend to dance tonight" Kai said with as much polite as she could without showing her obvious disgust. "Excuse me" she said walked away from him.

She came out of the room and towards the garden without knowing that she was being followed. "But you know that I have always fancied you and you rebellious nature dutchess" Otis said coming from behind her.

Kai turned to face him. "Yes since I was a mere girl" Kai said.

"What is wrong with you girl. Can't you just accept me. I will show you what I can do" Otis said now being angry at being rejected again and grabbed Kai with her arms and tried to kiss her.

"Lord Brookhil, leave me this instant" Kai said feeling scared. She knew how to fight but it was impossible with her ball gown and the heels she was wearing.

Hiro came out from the ball room and towards the garden to get away from all those women. He sighed. He knew he had to face them but he didn't accept so many to talk to him at once.

Walking around in the garden he heard a scream or more like a angry shout. He ran towards the noise and found a man trying to kiss a girl. He was about to call out when he saw the girl punch the guy in the face, knocking him out.

She looked up in surprise and her eyes caught his. "Your majesty" she curtsied.

"Are you alright" Hiro asked. "I am fine your majesty, thank you" she said.

"What are you doing here. The ball is inside" Hiro asked.

"I could ask you the same thing your majesty" Kai asked embarrassed that she got caught punching a man that so by the crown prince.

"I am escaping"

"In your own home"

"I have no intension of marrying right now and rejecting every offer at their face would seem rude" Hiro said

"I know what you mean"

Hiro then looked at the girl fro the first time clearly. She had dual hair. The front stormy gray bangs forming her face and the blue at the back tied in a bun. She was wearing a light blue coloured off shoulder dress. She had the tiniest bit of make up yet she looked beautiful.

"I did not catch you name" Hiro said averting his eyes from her.

"Dutchess Kai Hwatari, your majesty" Kai said.

Hiro hummed and looked at the stars. "You know I might be overstepping my boundries here but would you like to negotiate" Hiro said looking back at Kai.

"What kind of negotiation"

"I am not interested in marrying yet and the way you are here avoiding everyone, I am assuming you are not interested as well"

"Where are you going with this, your majesty" Kai said.

"We can pretend we are together. This will keep every girl and those hungry mama's away from me and every man away from you" Hiro said.

"And you are sure this would work. I mean we just met and my first impression is knocking a guy out" Kai said.

"I am not sure it will work but we can give it a try. As for meeting, you are quite beautiful and you can catch attention of any man by just passing by" Hiro said.

"It is worth a shot" Kai said blushing slightly at the compliment.

With that they both walked in hand in hand. Kai felt a sense of déjà-vu as every eye was on her again. She could hear quite whispering as they entered the ball room and Hiro lead her towards the dance floor. From the corner of her eyes she could see Voltaire's satisfied smirk and Maria's jealous face.

Putting a arm on Hiro's shoulder and the other holding his arm they began to dance. A dance she learned when she was ten. She continued to move in snc with the prince without knowing their fate.
