These characters are not mine but they are fun to work with.

It was just four months after the boys had come home, and were recovering from their ordeal. They were enjoying life.

Winry had suggested that her and the boys go for a picnic but Al had declined saying he was really interested in his book, and it was too hard to put down. "You two go ahead. I'll go next time" he said. "Are you sure?" Ed asked. "I'm fine. Seriously. Go ahead." He looked back at his book. "I'll leave your lunch here on the table when you're ready." Winry said. Then she picked up the basket and headed out the door with Edward following behind her.

They reached a hill and placed a blanket under a tree to provide some shade from the sun. They sat down the blanket, and Winry placed the basket between them. They enjoyed the lunch that she made, which consisted of sandwiches, lemonade, and a special surprise. "You made cookies?!" "Yes! I can make something else besides apple pie." Ed stuffed one into his mouth. "These are so good!" He ate another one, and then remembered something his brother told him. 'You should compliment her. Girls like being told nice things.' Maybe this was one of those moments. He spoke quietly "Your baking has gotten really good." He blushed a little which make Winry blush a little. She quietly said "Thank you."

After their lunch was finished, Edward and Winry sat and spoke about neutral topics. Ed started "I can't believe Al didn't want to come. He loves this kind of the stuff." "He's fine. He's just preoccupied with that book he's reading." Winry said. "It's still weird. I hope he's feeling okay" Winry realized her plan was in jeopardy. "I'm sure he's fine. He's just really occupied with reading that book right now." She moved the basket from between them to her side and moved closer to him. 'I am going to have to make this obvious to him.'

Winry had to change the topic fast before Edward decided to go home to check on Al. "So, I know this is going to sound kind of weird but I never thought about saying it before. What you did on the Promised Day, thank you for saving us." Ed put his hand on the back of his head because these kinds of things were awkward to him. "Well, yeah. I didn't want to lose you.. I mean, the country."

Winry looked at Edward. "You have chocolate on your face." "What? Where?" "Just hold still." She put licked her index finger, and rubbed the chocolate off. They looked into each other's eyes, and she started leaning in closer. Edward was nervous and leaned into her until their lips met for the first time. 'His tongue is in my mouth! His tongue is in my mouth!' She thought in her mind but calmed herself so she wouldn't pull away. She met him with her tongue, and slowly put her hand where his shoulder and neck meet. Edward had his own moment of panic. 'Where do I put my hand?' He placed it on her waist because that seemed safe.

When they were both out of breath, they pulled away from each and Ed wrapped his arms around and hugged her. He didn't want to look at her eyes right away because he was feeling slightly embarrassed at their display of affection. He had no idea what to say next. And neither did she. 'I never thought about what I would say after!' At least her plan to get Ed alone had worked at the price of giving Al a dozen cookies. She hugged him back and her hands roamed his back.

Winry pulled away and looked at Ed's red face that probably matched hers. "That was nice." 'That was stupid to say.' She thought after she said it. He turned his face away and looked in front of them. She heard him inhale sharply and he placed his arm around her shoulder. She leaned into him. 'Maybe this is his way of saying he liked it too.'

After they made it home, Ed went upstairs, and Winry went into the kitchen to find Al eating his plate of cookies. "So how did it go?" He smiled at her. "A lady doesn't kiss and tell." She winked at him.

A few weeks later…

"Hey Edward, can you help me hang up the laundry outside?" She asked the man laying on the couch with a book in his hand. "You need help with that? Fine!" He grumbled marking the place in his book. Al continued to read, happy that he got out of doing a chore.

Edward followed Winry outside while she was carrying the basket of wet sheets. "I hang the laundry by myself. Why do you need help?" "You idiot. I didn't bring outside just for that." She set the basket down. 'Don't get angry and ruin this.' She thought to herself. "Huh? What is it then?" he asked really confused. She wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him. And the lightbulb went off in his head. "Oh." He smiled at her. He leaned down and started kissing her. They opened their mouths and let their tongues dance.

"Hey guys, do you need help? Oh never mind" Al yelled once he realized the scene. Their kiss broke and Ed yelled "What the hell Al?!" He still held on to her, and their faces turned bright red. Al ran back inside. With the moment ruined, they sighed. Even though Al knew from Winry's hint that something it was going on, it was different actually seeing it happening.

Winry hugged Ed and realized "We need to tell Granny before she finds out like this. Wait, what is this?" Winry backed away so that she could look at Edward's face. They hadn't really talked about their emotions yet. "What do you mean? We like to kiss." Edward was once again confused. Winry was getting frustrated at his cluelessness. She took a deep breath "I mean I want to call you my boyfriend." She sighed, trying not to get angry. 'Oh, she wants a title.' He put his hand behind his head, "Well you can call me that." Immediately the anger was gone, and she squeled with delight and hugged him fiercely. "YAY! I've never been a girlfriend before!" She squeezed him hard and started to head inside. Edward finally realized he had a girlfriend and stood dumbfounded, and then realized something. "Winry! We still have to hang the laundry!"

Later that week

Winry had told Pinako of her and Ed's developing relationship. And later that evening, she sent Alphonse upstairs to that she could chat with them. Winry and Edward sat on the couch across from her. "Well, I know how young love is, and I wanted to make sure you 2 were safe to go about it." She set a box on the table and pushed it towards them. Edward picked up the box and read it and almost dropped it. Winry took it from him and threw it back on the table. "Granny, we're not ready for that yet!" The teenagers were mortified at box of condoms. Pinako gave them the talk and ended it with "I don't want Winry getting pregnant while she's still not married! Do you two understand?" The teens nodded and started to get up. "Take the condoms with you." Winry picked them up and put them in her room. Edward and Winry couldn't look at each other for a week without feeling awkward.
