The Temple of Evil
(Inside the ship's control room, the glass column in the centre of the console comes to a stop. The five time travellers all stand around the console.)
DOCTOR: Well, we've arrived.
IAN: Do you know where – or rather, when?
(The Doctor looks at some readings on the console.)
DOCTOR: Oh, blasted thing. (He whacks the console) It's acting up again. However, the oxygen and radiation levels are perfectly safe, I can assure you.
BARBARA: So, we can go outside for a look?
DOCTOR: Yes, but don't go far. And stay together.
BARBARA: We will.
DOCTOR: Right. Now, Chesterton, I could use your help to check the computer banks. I want to make sure everything is in working order before we leave.
(The Doctor leads Ian towards the back of the control room where the computer banks are..)
SUSAN: (To Princess & Barbara) Come on, let's go.
PRINCESS: One moment, Susan. Barbara, might I have a word before we go.
BARBARA: Of course.
(The Princess leads Barbara over to the other side of the room, leaving Susan by the console.)
PRINCESS: Barbara, I just wanted… I wanted to let you know – that is – what happened back on Marinus. When Kala had Susan…
BARBARA: I understand. You were just frightened for her safety. (She hesitates before continuing) But what you did…what was that?
PRINCESS: It's…a part of me I'd rather not show. It just came out then because, as you say, I was frightened for Susan's well-being. I'm only sorry you had to see that…side of me. But please know, I mean you no harm and I'd never let that side of myself loose on you.
BARBARA: I know that, Princess. You don't have to convince me. Nor do you have to tell me anything more.
PRINCESS: (Relieved) Thank you, Barbara. You're a kind and understanding woman.
BARBARA: Well, I'm glad you think so. Now, come on, why don't we put all that business on Marinus behind us and go and see where we've landed. I think Susan's getting impatient.
(The two women chuckle before returning to Susan.)
SUSAN: Are you done?
PRINCESS: Yes, we're finished. Thank you for being patient, Susan.
BARBAR: Now, why don't you let us out.
(Susan happily activates the door controls and the wall opens up. Barbara steps out first with Susan and the Princess behind her. They exit the police box and enter a dark chamber. Nearby is a table with a corpse laid on top, dressed in fine silks and surrounded by gold and jewellery. A mask covers the corpse's face. Seeing this Barbara eagerly approaches it.)
BARBARA: Look at that. It's an Aztec mask. He must have been a priest.
(Susan and the Princess also approach the table for a closer look, as Barbara begins rummaging through the still shiny jewellery.)
SUSAN: Well, the Aztecs were Mexicans. We must be on Earth again. I wonder what year it is.
BARBARA: He must have died around…1430, I should think.
PRINCESS: That's quite an impressive guess.
BARBARA: Not really, all these things belong to the Aztec's early period.
SUSAN: Now, that's what I call really knowing your subject.
BARBARA: Ah, well, that was one of my specialties, Susan.
(As Barbara talks, she takes a bracelet in the shape of a snake and puts it on her arm. The bracelet makes it look as if the snake has slithered its way around her arm.)
SUSAN: The little I know about them doesn't impress me.
PRINCESS: Yes, cutting out people's hearts is quite barbaric.
(Susan shivers.)
BARBARA: Oh, that was only one side to their nature. The other side was highly civilised.
SUSAN: The Spanish didn't think so.
PRINCESS: With good reason.
BARBARA: Yes, they only saw the acts of sacrifice. That was the tragedy of the Aztecs. The whole civilisation was completely destroyed, the good as well as the evil.
PRINCESS: Well, when the good is a product of brutal sacrifices, perhaps it's for the best.
BARBARA: But if the good could have been separated from the evil, then perhaps–
(Susan has wondered across the room towards a wall covered with Aztec drawings.)
SUSAN: Hey, look, cartoons! They've got bubbles coming out of their mouths.
BARBARA: Those aren't cartoons, Susan. It's Aztec writing.
PRINCESS: It looks similar to Egyptian hieroglyphs?
BARBARA: Yes, it is. It involves the usage of symbols and pictures like the Egyptians hieroglyphs, but you could say they're different languages.
SUSAN: Like Spanish and Portuguese?
BARBARA: Yes. They're similar in many ways but also distinct in others, making the two separate.
(Susan puts her hands against the wall with the Aztec writing on it.)
PRINCESS: Susan, be careful.
(The wall moves from beneath. Susan bends down and pushes it further seeing it leads into another room. Barbara and the Princess come over to help, pushing the bottom of the wall up as the top half comes down.)
SUSAN: Look!
(The wall hangs open as Barbara ducks under and enters the next room, a much larger and more open one.)
PRINCESS: Barbara, we should wait for the others.
(Barbara looks around the empty room.)
BARBARA: It's all right, there's no one here. You go and get them, I won't go far.
SUSAN: Are you sure you'll be all right?
BARBARA: Yes, I just want to look around.
PRINCESS: All right, but don't leave that room
BARBARA: I won't.
SUSAN: (Quietly) I've heard that before.
(The Princess smiles at Susan as they withdraw into the tomb and towards the ship. But as they do, unbeknownst to them, the wall closes over behind them, trapping Barbara on the other side.)
(Later, the Doctor comes marching out of the ship angrily, followed by the Princess and Susan.)
DOCTOR: I don't care if she is interested in them, I told her repeatedly not to go off on her own.
PRINCESS: Will you calm down, she's just in the other–
SUSAN: The door! It's closed.
(Ian comes out the ship, closing the door behind him.)
IAN: Now, where is this door, Susan?
SUSAN: Here.
(Susan pushes the wall as she did before, and it begins to open. The Doctor and Ian go first, holding up the wall and making sure it's steady before continuing into the room.)
IAN: Barbara? Barbara?
(The Princess and Susan follow them through into the next room, but it's empty once again.)
IAN: No sign of her.
SUSAN: She was here when we left her.
PRINCESS: And we couldn't have been gone more than a few minutes.
(Ian looks nervous. Ian then leads the group from the room and outside. They stand at the top of a stone building in the side of a mountain – a temple. Ian then spots what's below them.)
IAN: Doctor, look at this extraordinary city down here.
DOCTOR: The Aztecs. They knew how to build.
(Ian approaches the waist high wall around the edge.)
IAN: We must be pretty high up here. Place seems absolutely deserted.
DOCTOR: Yes, I hope you're right. These Aztecs had some rather gruesome habits.
(Still inside, the Princess and Susan are looking around the room which they hear stone scraping stone. They look up, following the sound to the door they came through, as the wall closes over.)
IAN: The door!
(Ian comes running into the room.)
DOCTOR: Quickly!
(Ian tries to stop the wall, but it's already back in place as the others run over to join him. Ian feels the wall frantically with his hands.)
IAN: There's nothing to get a grip on.
SUSAN: There must be some way of opening it.
DOCTOR: Yes, you push from the other side. These tombs were designed to prevent grave robbers, not to aid and abet them.
PRINCESS: But if there's a door out there must surely be one leading in?
(Before the Doctor can answer, an aging man enters from the archway leading outside. He wears the robes of an Aztec high priest. Behind him, follow Aztec warriors.)
AUTLOC: Autloc, High Priest of Knowledge, most humbly greets the servants of Yetaxa.
(The time travellers turn towards Autloc. They then look to one another in confusion before looking back to him.)
DOCTOR: (To Autloc) The servants of whom, sir?
AUTLOC: Yetaxa, the High Priest.
IAN: Where's Barbara?
AUTLOC: Of whom do you speak?
IAN: The woman who was here a moment ago.
AUTLOC: In due time you shall meet again, but first grant us our courtesies. No evil exists in our hearts towards you. In fact, we honour you.
(Autloc bows. The time travels share another confused look before the Princess steps forward.)
PRINCESS: We thank you for greeting us. Might we know our host's name?
AUTLOC: Autloc.
PRINCESS: And you are…the High Priest, correct?
AUTLOC: As such I serve.
(The Doctor then steps forward.)
DOCTOR: You know where we came from, sir?
AUTLOC: The tomb.
DOCTOR: Tell me, is there a way through from this side?
AUTLOC: The tomb is sealed. Go now with these attendants, and soon you shall meet the one who wears the bracelet of Yetaxa.
(Autloc and the warriors bow before the warriors then form a ring around the time travellers.)
DOCTOR: (Quietly) What's he talking about now?
SUSAN: (Quietly) He must be talking about Barbara. She picked up a bracelet from the tomb.
PRINCESS: (Quietly) I think it best we play along for now. I don't like the look of those spears.
(The Princess looks uneasily at the warriors around them, each holding a sharp spear.)
IAN: (Quietly) Yes, and if it is Barbara they're taking us to, maybe she can tell us what's going on.
(They begin to walk with the warriors remaining around them. They step outside onto the platform, but before continuing, the Doctor stops and looks over. Ian does the same, as does the Princess who recoils at the sight. Susan then looks and yelps, cuddling into the Princess' side as they all look at a man with a huge thick line painted across his face and over his mouth. He wears the robes of an Aztec high priest also.)
DOCTOR: (To Ian) You know who he is?
IAN: The local butcher by the look of him.
DOCTOR: Exactly.
(The Doctor then continues on, the other following him while the Princess keeps Susan close...)
(Later, in a small room, further down the temple stairs, the Doctor, Princess, Ian and Susan stand waiting.)
SUSAN: Well, they've treated us all right so far.
DOCTOR: The Aztecs always showed the utmost courtesy towards their intended victims.
SUSAN: (Panicked) What?!
PRINCESS: (To Doctor) Would you be quiet, you're scaring her.
(The Princess puts an arm around Susan to reassure her.)
DOCTOR: I'm merely speculating.
PRINCESS: Yes, well, if you could do so quietly, we'd all appreciate it.
(A warrior then enters and bows to them, before gesturing to the door. The time travellers oblige and step outside. Once again, they are surrounded by warriors who then escort them back up the stairs and into the temple room they originally came from. Only now the room has warriors in every corner and two flanking the throne in the centre. And on that throne, a woman sits in Aztec royal clothing, one the travellers recognise.)
IAN: Barbara?
BARBARA: (To the warriors) Leave us.
(One warrior bows before silently ordering them all out. The warriors quickly file out of the temple, leaving the time travellers alone. The Doctor begins to chuckle as he and the others approach Barbara on her throne.)
DOCTOR: Good gracious.
IAN: (To Barbara) What on earth are you doing there?
BARBARA: They think I'm a reincarnation of that priest in the tomb. I found this and put it on, and when the High Priest caught me, I was still wearing it.
(Barbara shows them the snake like bracelet still on her arm.)
SUSAN: So, he thought you were a god?
BARBARA: Yes.
SUSAN: But the priest in the tomb's a man. How can you be a reincarnation of him?
BARBARA: The form the spirit takes isn't important, Susan. (Points to bracelet) This is what's important.
IAN: Yes, that High Priest, what was his name?
DOCTOR: Autloc.
IAN: That's right, Orkloc–
ALL: Autloc!
IAN: Autloc. Well, he said we were the servants of Yetaxa. Is that who they think you are?
BARBARA: Yes.
IAN: And we're your servants?
BARBARA: That's right.
(The all begin to laugh.)
DOCTOR: Charming. It must make quite a change for you, Princess. Being the servant.
PRINCESS: Oh, I don't know, it doesn't feel too bad so far.
(They continue to laugh.)
BARBARA: Well, it'll be useful for us, me being Yetaxa. It means we can go into the tomb any time we want to, get into the Tardis and leave.
SUSAN: We can't. It only opens from the inside.
DOCTOR: Reincarnations can come out, but human beings can't go in.
PRINCESS: (To Barbara) So, you'll need to find another way in.
DOCTOR: (To Barbara) That's one thing you mustn't do. As Yetaxa, you're supposed to know everything. If the Aztecs decide you're not what you're supposed to be, then we shall all die.
(Autloc, and the other high priest from before, enter and bow to Barbara.)
TLOTOXL: Great spirit of Yetaxa, I, Tlotoxl, High Priest of Sacrifice, salute you.
(Tlotoxl bows once again.)
DOCTOR: (Quietly) As you said, Chesterton, the local butcher.
BARBARA: (To Tlotoxl) I acknowledge the High Priest's greeting.
AUTLOC: For many days the Rain God has looked away from us, and the land withers and the people groan.
TLOTOXL: We have prayed that the land may again be bountiful. And this day we honour Tlaloc's name.
AUTLOC: When the sun's fire first touches the horizon to the west, the people will stand before the temple in obedience to our commands. We humbly beg, Great Spirit, that at that time the people shall see you and know that their suffering draws to an end.
DOCTOR: (Quietly) And Barbara will appear and down will come the rains.
BARBARA: I shall do as the High Priest requests.
AUTLOC: We also beseech you, Great Spirit, to permit your handmaidens and servants to move freely among our people.
(The Doctor steps forward to look at Barbara.)
DOCTOR: Oh, Great Spirit, grant us this our wish, that we may be your eyes and ears among the people, to do our best and serve in all our interests.
AUTLOC: The aged servant of Yetaxa speaks with wisdom.
BARBARA: My youngest handmaiden remains with me. The others may do as you wish.
AUTLOC: We shall await you.
(Tlotoxl and Autloc bow before exiting outside. The Doctor watches them go before turning back to Barbara and chuckling.)
DOCTOR: (To Barbara) A wonderful performance, my dear. Congratulations. We now have everything we want.
BARBARA: We do?
DOCTOR: Yes. You and Susan here in safety. And Ian, the Princess and I, outside finding out about the tomb.
IAN: Yes, it sounds all right, but I don't think we should take our eyes off those two for a second.
DOCTOR: Oh, I shouldn't mind them. They're far too busy timing their miracle.
SUSAN: What miracle?
DOCTOR: Presenting Barbara to the public one second before it rains. (Dramatically) Now, if the Great Yetaxa will allow us to depart.
BARBARA: (Chuckling) Yes, off you go. Susan and I will look after each other.
DOCTOR: Splendid.
(The Doctor, Princess and Ian make their way outside to join Tlotoxl and Autloc on the platform. As they do, Tlotoxl quickly approaches them.)
TLOTOXL: It has been decided. The old couple may walk abroad. (Points to Ian) You shall train to command our army.
DOCTOR: Surely that is for Yetaxa to decide?
IAN: (Quickly) Yetaxa would not refuse so great an honour… I accept.
TLOTOXL: Autloc, take the old couple into the Garden of Peace, that they may sit in comfort.
(The Doctor and Princess look to Ian, but at his nod they begin to follow Autloc down the steps of the temple…)
(Later, in a beautiful garden near the base of the temple, the Doctor and Princess stand with Autloc, while other old people around stare at them curiously. One woman in particular, has her eye on the Doctor.)
DOCTOR: (To Autloc) Why are all these people here?
AUTLOC: It is our law that all who attain their fifty second year, shall pleasurably pass the remainder of their lives free from responsibility and care.
(Autloc begin to lead the Doctor and Princess around the garden.)
DOCTOR: Poor old souls, they must be bored to tears doing nothing.
PRINCESS: (Admiring the planets) Although, there are worst places to do nothing.
AUTLOC: We often seek the accumulated wisdom of their years.
DOCTOR: What about?
AUTLOC: All manner of things. Each person here has served the community in one way or another. He was a weaver of priestly garments, she was a woman of medicine. That man–
DOCTOR: And what about her?
(The Doctor points to the woman who's been watching him. She shies away as the Doctor looks to her, before taking a seat on a stone bench.)
AUTLOC: Cameca? Of all those here, her advice is most sought after.
DOCTOR: What did you say her name was?
AUTLOC: Cameca. You will find her a companion of wit and interest.
PRINCESS: I like the sound her already.
AUTLOC: And now I beg permission to depart.
DOCTOR: Of course.
(They each bow to one another and then Autloc leaves. The Doctor and Princess then approach Cameca who is picking flowers from her bench.)
DOCTOR: (To Cameca) In spite of the drought, there's plenty of water for the flowers.
CAMECA: Better to go hungry than starve for beauty.
(Cameca hands the Doctor one of the picked flowers.)
DOCTOR: Thank you. (He sniffs the flower) Mmm, all the perfume of the gods.
PRINCESS: This is a most beautiful garden you have. Just being here fills me with... (Inhales deeply) Bliss.
CAMECA: It is the Garden of Peace.
DOCTOR: A very apt description.
CAMECA: The words of Topau.
DOCTOR: Topau?
CAMECA: The man who built the temple.
PRINCESS: Did he design this garden as well?
CAMECA: As a labour of love.
DOCTOR: Yes, one senses that immediately. Does he come here often?
CAMECA: He watches over us constantly.
DOCTOR: Oh, I see, he's a gardener.
CAMECA: No.
DOCTOR: But you just said that he watches–
(The Princess, nudges the Doctor subtly.)
PRINCESS: (Quietly) Doctor…
(The Princess' look helps the Doctor realise what he's overlooked.)
DOCTOR: Oh…he's dead. My apologises. (A pause, then gestures to bench) May we join you?
CAMECA: Of course.
(The Doctor and Princess sit down next to Cameca.)
CAMECA: Tell me, how long have you been together?
(The Doctor and Princess look at each, then laugh.)
DOCTOR & PRINCESS: No, no, no, no!
PRINCESS: We're not married.
DOCTOR: She's far above my lowly status.
PRINCESS: And he's far too old for me.
CAMECA: I'm not sure I can agree.
(Cameca stares at the Doctor and he stares back. While the Princess looks between them and grins.)
DOCTOR: (To Cameca) I, eh, would have liked to have met him – Topau. Did you know him?
CAMECA: (Nods sadly) Well… His son lives.
DOCTOR: Ah, a builder?
CAMECA: A warrior.
DOCTOR: (Muttering) Oh, I see. Still, we can't all be perfect, I suppose.
PRINCESS: (To Cameca) Perhaps he might know of his father's work. I find this garden's design to be most interesting.
DOCTOR: And the temple.
PRINCESS: Oh, yes, and the temple too.
DOCTOR: Very fascinating.
PRINCESS: Indeed.
CAMECA: A meeting between you could be arranged.
(The Doctor takes Cameca's hand.)
DOCTOR: My dear lady, we should be so grateful.
IAN: Doctor, Princess.
(Ian approaches them, dressed in full Aztec armour.)
DOCTOR: (Chuckling) My dear Chesterton…
(The Doctor and Princess get up.)
PRINCESS: You're looking very smart.
(The Doctor then gestures to Cameca.)
DOCTOR: This dear lady has promised us, to arrange a meeting between ourselves and the son of the man who built the temple.
(Ian bows to Cameca.)
IAN: Most kind of you, madam.
(Cameca stands.)
CAMECA: Pray excuse me, then you may talk more freely.
PRINCESS: That would be most kind, thank you.
(They each bow to one another, then Cameca leaves. The Doctor watches her go.)
DOCTOR: Charming person.
IAN: Doctor…
PRINCESS: (To Doctor) Quite attractive too?
IAN: Doctor, Princess…
DOCTOR: (To Princess) Yes, I suppose so. And so intelligent and gentle.
IAN: Would the two of you listen to me, please!
(The Doctor and Princess each turn to give Ian their attention.)
IAN: There is to be a human sacrifice today at the ceremony for the Rain God, and I have to–
DOCTOR: Just a minute, what are you supposed to do?
IAN: I must escort the victim to the altar and hold him down. Doctor, I can't–
DOCTOR: Do it, man, do it! But don't interfere.
IAN: But–
DOCTOR: There's no buts about it! If human sacrifice is essential here and it's their tradition, then let them get on with it. But for our sakes, don't interfere.
IAN: (To Princess) And do you feel the same way?
PRINCESS: (Hesitantly) Yes, I do. I'm sorry we've gotten you into another situation like this, Ian, but we have to do things their way for now. To rise any suspicion could mean our deaths.
IAN: And what about the death of the man I am to hold down.
PRINCESS: Ian, he's already dead. I know it's not what you want to hear, but with or without you he's going to be sacrificed. By not participating you're only endangering yourself and us. I am sorry, truly I am, but you must do this, for all our sakes.
DOCTOR: Now promise us, please. Promise.
(Looking between the Doctor and Princess, Ian reluctantly nods.)
PRINCESS: Thank you.
DOCTOR: Now, we'll go and tell Barbara.
(The Doctor leads the Princess from the garden.)
(The Doctor reaches the top of the temple with the Princess. But blocking the entrance to the temple are two warriors with spears. The Doctor pushes on regardless.)
DOCTOR: (To warriors) Get out of my way! Go on. Let me pass. I must talk to Yetaxa.
(The warriors cross their spears denying the Doctor entry. The Doctor glares at them both.)
PRINCESS: (To warriors) We are servants of the Yetaxa and have been summoned. Let us pass.
(The warriors hesitate, but then unlock their spears allowing the Doctor and Princess step through. As they enter the temple, Susan approaches them.)
DOCTOR: Ah, Susan, please go outside and don't let anybody in.
SUSAN: Right.
PRINCESS: If the guards ask any questions tell them the Yetaxa commands it and that anyone coming in must announce themselves first.
(Susan nods before exiting the temple. Barbara then approaches the Doctor and Princess.)
BARBARA: What is it? What's happened?
DOCTOR: There's to be a human sacrifice today at the Rain Ceremony.
BARBARA: Oh, no…
(Barbara leads them back over to her throne.)
DOCTOR: And you must not interfere, do you understand?
BARBARA: I can't just sit by and watch!
PRINCESS: I know it's difficult, but you must, Barbara.
DOCTOR: Ian agrees with us. He's got to escort the victim to the altar.
BARBARA: He has to what?!
DOCTOR: Yes, they've made him a warrior, and he's promised us not to interfere with the sacrifice.
BARBARA: Well, they've made me a goddess. And I forbid it.
DOCTOR: Barbara, no.
BARBARA: There will be no sacrifice this afternoon, Doctor. Or ever again. The reincarnation of Yetaxa will prove to the people that you don't need to sacrifice a human being in order to make it rain.
PRINCESS: Barbara, you can't, that's not how it works, and you know it.
BARBARA: It's no good, Princess, my mind's made up. This is the beginning of the end of the Sun God.
DOCTOR: What are you talking about?
BARBARA: Don't you see? If I could start the destruction of everything that's evil here, then everything that is good would survive when Cortes lands.
DOCTOR: But you can't rewrite history. Not one line!
(Susan returns, standing alongside the Doctor and Princess.)
SUSAN: Barbara, the high priests are coming.
(Barbara goes to put on the last of her royal clothing for the ceremony. The Princess follows her over.)
PRINCESS: Barbara, please. I understand what you're trying to do, I've thought of doing it myself so many times with my own people. But it doesn't work. It never works out the way you plan. Their rituals, their way of life, the bloodshed – it will continue no matter what you do. You can tell them to stop, order it, but it goes on.
DOCTOR: She's right, Barbara. What you are trying to do is utterly impossible. History will not bend to your whim.
(Barbara dons the final head piece of her royal outfit.)
BARBARA: Not Barbara. Yetaxa.
(Barbara exits the temple and joins the warriors outside waiting for her.)
DOCTOR: (Angrily, to self) Stubborn, foolish woman!
PRINCESS: She's just trying to do what she thinks is right.
DOCTOR: And we should be stopping her!
PRINCESS: We can't!
SUSAN: Grandfather? Princess? What is it, what's happening? What can't Barbara do?
(Susan looks between the Doctor and Princess, but neither answer her. When Susan then tries to go outside the Doctor pulls her back towards him and holds her close.)
SUSAN: (Scared) Grandfather? Why can't I see what's going on?
DOCTOR: You must stay here, child. You must.
PRINCESS: He's right. Just…Just stay with him, Susan.
(The Princess makes her way towards the exit, standing where she can see outside. On the stone in the middle of the platform outside the temple, a man lies flat – the sacrifice. Around him stand several warriors, while Barbara stands with Tlotoxl. The high priest of sacrifice bows to her, then steps towards the sacrifice. The Princess watches nervously.)
TLOTOXL: (To Ian & another warrior) Take his arms. Take his legs. (To the sky) Great Tlaloc, God of Rain, I Tlotoxl, High Priest of Sacrifice, call upon you to look with favour upon our land. Give us the water that is our life, and we will honour you with blood.
SUSAN: No!
(Susan runs past the Princess, who tries to catch her but is too slow.)
BARBARA: Stop!
(Tlotoxl turns, angrily glaring at Barbara, as the Princess runs out after Susan, along with the Doctor. They all come to stand by Barbara as she continues.)
BARBARA: I, Yetaxa, command you. There shall be no more blood spilt.
(Tlotoxl steps back, shocked, while the sacrifice jumps up.)
SACRIFICE: (To Barbara) You have denied me honour.
(Tlotoxl approaches the sacrifice form behind.)
TLOTOXL: (To sacrifice) Honour us then with your death.
(Tlotoxl points to the edge of the temple. The man runs to the edge and leaps up off as Susan screams, turning towards the Princess who holds her tightly. Then, stillness…before it starts to rain, followed by thunder and lightning in the sky.)
TLOTOXL: With death came rain!
BARBARA: (To Tlotoxl) Without your sacrifice came rain.
TLOTOXL: Does Yetaxa speak with the voice of the gods, or as the protector of a handmaiden?
BARBARA: As a god.
TLOTOXL: Then let the handmaiden be punished. She cried out and desecrated sacred ground. She transgressed the law.
BARBARA: She did not know it.
TLOTOXL: Then let knowledge be beaten into her.
PRINCESS: Don't you–!
BARBARA: No one shall be punished for an offence committed in ignorance.
TLOTOXL: I demand that she be punished!
BARBARA: No! Let her instead be taught respect for your customs.
(Autloc steps forward.)
AUTLOC: I will take her to the seminary.
BARBARA: So be it, Autloc.
AUTLOC: The Great Spirit of Yetaxa has spoken.
(Autloc approaches Susan, hand outstretched. But the Princess continues to hold on to Susan tightly. However, a look from Barbara and a hesitant nod from Susan, pushes the Princess in to letting go. Susan then takes Autloc's hand and allows him to lead her away.)
TLOTOXL: No. No, this is not Yetaxa. (He points to Barbara) This is a false goddess! (He then looks to you) And I shall destroy her…
