"You're down here early!"
Hermione was surprised to see Ron come down to breakfast only a couple of minutes after her. On the weekends he and Harry usually liked to sleep in. But perhaps after last night, he couldn't sleep.
Last night, Harry's name came out of the goblet of fire. Hermione has no clue how that is possible since Harry clesrly didn't do it. Besides, he wouldn't have gotten past that age line. Which means somebody else had to have done it, but who?
"Have you spoken to Harry?" Hermione asked Ron.
Ron grabbed a slice of toast without looking at her and then nodded his head. It wasn't normal for Ron to act like this. Something was definitely wrong.
"Ron is everything alright?"
Ron stared at his toast for a few moments before answering. "Harry and I got into an argument"
"What!? When? Just now?"
Ron shook his head. "Last night"
Hermione was about to ask what on earth happened, but then she remembered how quiet Ron had been last night on the way to the common room, after Dumbledore dismissed them.
She assumed this was just because he was too worried about Harry to talk, as she had been.
"Ron.. why are you arguing with Harry?"
She couldn't imagine why he had been angry. Harry was the one who would be in danger.
"Because he never told me about entering the tournament. He lied to me. He said he didn't do it but he obviously did"
Hermione was shocked to hear that Ron didn't believe Harry. The two of them were best friends. They had never once gotten into an argument.
How could Ron not believe Harry? He couldn't have got past that age line of Dumbledore's. Fred and George hadn't, so how could Harry.
Hermione was feeling annoyed that Ron didn't believe Harry and felt he was wrong not to. But she swallowed down the urge to tell him about how he was so wrong.
Last year, when Hermione and Ron had their big fallout over their pets, it had been unbearable for her, and a large part of the problem was her not willing to apologise for ages or admit that she could have been wrong.
That fallout had taught her that there sometimes, even if you felt you were right, the best thing to do was not try to point out all of the reasons that you think makes you right.
"Ron, what makes you think Harry did it?"
"Well somehow he had it done. His name wouldn't just get written on parchment and fly in itself. Besides he said himself that he'd have done it when everyone else was gone to bed"
"And you're angry with him because you feel he lied?" Hermione asked Ron.
"Yeah. I don't see why he had to do it. He doesn't need the fame or the money. It's not like there isn't a single person in this school who doesn't know his name"
Hermione could hear how bitter he sounded at the end of that sentence and then she started to spot what she thinks is the real problem.
Ron was feeling jealous.
Harry was always getting all of the attention. She didn't blame Harry for it though. He was famous because of stopping Lord Voldemort as a baby and everyone in the wizarding world knew his name.
Ever since they arrived at Hogwarts, everyone has wanted to stare at Harry at least once. Ron was known as the red haired kid who stood next to him. Harry had also done a lot of stuff since arriving at Hogwarts. He saved the Philosopher's Stone, he killed the basilisk, and he is the reason Gryffindor won the quidditch cup for the first time in years.
Things were starting to make sense now. Ron had always been insecure about not standing out at home because of all his brothers, and becoming Harry's best friend wouldn't have helped.
Hermione wasn't sure what she could say to him. But before she could think of something, Ron stood up.
"I'm gonna go look for Fred and George. See you later Hermione"
Ron left the Great Hall after that. Hermione thought about going after him but she still couldn't think of anything to say.
She decided to give Ron some space. She wrapped some toast in a napkin and left the Great Hall and headed for the Gryffindor Common Room. Maybe Harry would be less angry than Ron and he would tell her what happened last night in thr trophy room, and then they could go and talk to Ron together.
But she did not feel very hopeful.
