Erin had not been back in Chicago for long, only a couple of weeks, but she keen to explore the places she had once loved and, sadly, she found there were few places she could go without thinking about Jay, thinking about how she had left him. She had loved him and, if she were honest with herself, she still did, she wondered if he still felt the same way about her.
Suddenly, as if in a dream, she saw Jay, as she was walking past the park and, for a couple of seconds, her heart stopped, until she saw that he was not alone. He was with a blonde woman and a little girl. His family. He had a family. He looked happy, happier than she had ever seen him.
Jay was busy playing with 2-year-old Paige, who was busy running around, pretending that her daddy was a monster. Paige was the perfect combination of Jay and Hailey; she had Hailey's eyes and her blue eyes, with Jay's freckles and, like her parents, she was a born fighter. Paige had been born at 28 weeks and, from the moment she had been born, Jay had called her his 'little fighter.' Paige and Hailey were the most precious people in this whole world and Will, Nat and their kids were a close second.
It was only then that Hailey noticed that they were being watched and Jay was totally oblivious, because he and Paige were playing their endless game of 'Daddy, the Tickle-Monster', but Hailey saw her and she was almost certain that she knew who it was.
Not wanting to take away from their time together, Hailey walked over to Erin and smiled, curious. "You're Erin, right? I'm Hailey, Hailey Halstead. It's nice to put a face to the name, finally."
Erin was almost speechless, but she crocked, "How do you know how I am?"
Laughing lightly, Hailey replied, "I'm a detective, Erin; watching people is part of what I do for a living." She tried to ease the situation, then she inquired, "How long have you been back in Chicago?"
With her eyes back on Jay, Erin replied, not paying attention, "A couple of weeks." She turned her attention back to Hailey and asked, in a weak tone of voice, "Is that your husband and daughter?"
Hailey smiled with joy and pride, because the family she and Jay had created was both a pride and joy, even more so with the way that Paige had entered this world. She glanced over at Jay, who had noticed that she was talking to Erin and she could tell that he was alright, so she turned back to Erin and smiled, "Yeah. Come and meet my daughter."
Erin was feeling very sick, but she followed Hailey, to meet Jay's daughter and Jay gave her a friendly smile. With Paige in his arms, he asked, "Paige, this is Erin. She's an old friend of Daddy's. Can you say hello?"
Shyly, Paige waved and smiled slightly, clinging to Jay's neck and Erin felt as if her heart had stopped. She had never seen this side of Jay and now she was, but when he was married to someone else. Hailey took Paige into her own arms and just said, "I'll leave you to catch up." She threw Erin a kind smile, then lightly touched Jay's back before she walked away with Paige.
Jay had his hands in his jeans pockets and Erin couldn't help, but think of fine he looked in what he was wearing, before her thoughts were disturbed by his voice, gentle as ever. "It's good to see you, Erin. How are you?"
She looked into his eyes and she knew that he really did mean it. She couldn't tell him that she still loved him. She shifted on her feet, before she looked back at him and replied, "I'm good, thanks, Jay." She looked down at her hands, then stepped closer to him, looking into his eyes. "I've never seen you this happy. You deserve this happiness."
Jay smiled and nodded as he replied, slightly awkwardly, "Yeah, they're everything to me."
Speaking aloud, Erin said, "I always wondered what would happen if I came back and now I know. I don't regret our time together, Jay, but it's clear you're where you belong. With Hailey and your daughter, because you're happier than I've ever seen you."
Jay looked over at Hailey and Paige, then nodded, with a small smile. "Thanks, Erin. It was a long time ago and we both did what we needed." He cleared his throat, then was distracted by the sound of Paige crying for him. Erin could see that Hailey was trying to console her, but the 2-year-old wanted her daddy. He looked back at Erin and just said, "It was good to see you, Erin. Take care of yourself."
Erin reached for his arm and touched it lightly as she smiled and say, "You, too, Jay."
From a bit away, Hailey kissed her daughter's head, trying to console her. From her husband's body language, she was glad to see that he did not seem to be upset or distressed by the encounter with Erin and she was glad. For her part, she was glad that Erin had left because she and Jay had become partners, which had led her to her husband. Jay walked over to Hailey, took Paige from her arms, then his lips found Hailey's with a soft kiss. They were his family, his whole world and, just like Jay, during childhood, Hailey had never imagined that she ever be this happy, but they had found each other and created their wonderful little girl.
As Erin watched the three of them, she knew that this was the end. Jay was happier than she had ever seen him. She had left him. She had left Chicago and now that she had seen Hailey and Paige, she knew why. The reason why she had left. Sometimes, there really was good in goodbye.
