A Karasuno Confession
"I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do!" yelled Hinata Shoyo as he rolled across his bed, hands over his temples.
Yachi just posted a selfie with Shimizu-senpai while at dinner and his head nearly exploded from how gorgeous his blonde headed crush looked in a fitted dress and her hair pulled back. He had been dying to confess to her, but every time the opportunity presented itself, he chickened out and hid in the bathroom with stomach cramps.
"Oh, I know what might help," he said after being yelled at by his mother to shut up. "Maybe Kageyama and the others know what I can do!" he exclaimed as he pulled his phone out.
Despite Hinata and Kageyama being in their third year of high school now, they kept in contact with the original Karasuno volleyball team and hung out occasionally.
HS: I need heeeellllppp!
Hinata bit his lower lip as he rocked himself on the bed and waited to hear back from the guys.
Kageyama Tobio (KT): Dumb-butt. You always need help.
Nishinoya Yu (NY): What's up, Shoyo?
Daichi: Is it the club?
Tanaka: Who do I have to beat up? One of the City Boys?
Hinata jumped on his bed as he began to text his reply back.
HS: Kageyama, fight me! But for real. I need help and it's nothing involving the club per say! I…
Hinata paused, not sure if they would be of help or tease him to death. "Ah screw it!"
HS: I want to ask Yachi out!
Suddenly, a facetime video appeared on his screen from Tanaka. It was for the full group.
"Hinata!" screamed Tanaka. "Are you saying this because of the selfie with Kiyoko-san?!"
By this point, Nishinoya, Kageyama, Daichi, Suga, and Asahi were all in the video call as well as Hinata.
"Kiyoko-san is an absolute goddess!" chimed Nishinoya.
"You really think Yachi will want to date you?" Kageyama asked.
"Kageyama, I will really fight you," Hinata growled.
"Calm down everyone. Let's start from the beginning. Hinata, when did you realize you first liked Yachi?" Daichi asked. He pushed the glasses on his face up his nose.
"Well, maybe from the beginning, though it was more friendship based," Hinata replied as his face began to heat up.
"Okay, well what about when you liked her as more than a friend?" Suga asked, ignoring the cooing the other boys, namely Tanaka and Nishinoya, were doing.
"Maybe during our game with Shiratorizawa?" Hinata speculated. "I'm not really sure since it grew on me. One day she's a great friend, and the next I'm all shy around her."
"Awww," Tanaka and Noya cooed again while Kageyama gagged.
"Okay, so have you tried asking her out?" Asahi asked.
"I wanted to but I kept chickening out. I don't know how to approach her and tell her," Hinata said with a frown and a pout.
"That's easy! Just run up to her and embrace her," Noya offered as he threw one arm around himself.
"Sing out her name," Tanaka suggested.
"Follow her everywhere," Noya said.
"Make sure no guy gets around her," Tanaka added.
"Fight anyone who tries to approach her," Noya chimed.
The list kept growing from both Tanaka and Noya until Hinata's head spun.
"And if she smacks you, you got her man!" they both finally exclaimed.
"And stop!" Daichi shouted, effectively cutting them off.
"Hinata, don't listen to those morons. That never worked with Shimizu so don't take their word for it," Suga added.
"Oof. You words hurt, Suga," Tanaka fake cried.
"Morons. Why am I still here?" Kageyama asked.
"You could leave," Hinata sassily replied.
"You know what, now I'm staying," Kageyama shot back.
"No, leave," Hinata commanded.
"Nope, staying."
"Leave."
"No."
"Yes!"
"No!"
"Yes!"
"No!"
"Both of you stop!" Daichi yelled again, shutting them up. "Do you want our help, Hinata?" he added. "Because if not, I'll end the call here and go back to studying."
"No, I want the help," Hinata answered with a salute.
"Okay, then listen. First of all, just continue being yourself. A woman likes it when you don't change your personality for her sake most of the time," Daichi began. "I mean, look at how successful my relationship is with Michimiya," he added. "We're going on two years now."
"Congrats!" the guys cheered. Daichi grinned and fixed his glasses.
Meanwhile, Hinata literally pulled out a notepad and pen and scribbled this information down. "Okay and what else?" he asked.
"Well Hinata, you want to let her know you're interested," Asahi chimed in.
"But how?"
"By spending more time with her. Walking her home after school or suggesting to hang out, just the two of you," Suga answered.
"Isn't that a date?" Kageyama asked.
"Nope!" Tanaka exclaimed.
"It's only a date if you ask her out. But suggesting it's a hang out could lead to a date," Noya explained.
"Huh," Hinata muttered as he frowned while scribbling the information down.
"What kind of hang out should we do?" he asked.
"Have her toss you some volleyballs," Kageyama offered.
"No!" the rest of the boys shouted.
"Why not?" asked Kageyama and Hinata simultaneously with a frown.
"These two morons," Daichi muttered while Tanaka and Noya laughed at their obliviousness.
"If you want a girl to know you're interested, you can't involve them in club activities," Suga explained.
"You have to do something outside the usual in order for her to start looking at your guys' relationship more seriously," Daichi broke down.
"Oooh," both Hinata and Kageyama muttered.
"Yes. So Hinata, I would suggest taking her to an arcade or a movie," Asahi said.
"Or even to get some ice cream," Tanaka added.
"And when you feel like the time is right, tell her you like her and would like to date her," Suga finished with a shrug.
"But, what if she rejects me?" Hinata asked softly. The rest of the boys got quiet, not sure how to respond yet. Before anyone could, Kageyama answered.
"Then she rejects you, stupid."
"Oi, Kageyama," Daichi warned.
"I mean, not everyone will accept you," Kageyama continued as if he didn't hear Daichi. "Yachi is not the only girl in the world. And if she doesn't like you, some other poor girl will."
"Kageyama," Tanaka and Noya said before they began to cry in their shirts. "You got so mature!"
"O-oi," Kageyama stammered as he blushed.
"But Kageyama is right, Hinata," Asahi said.
"Yup. Unfortunately, not every person you like will like you back. Life works that way. But it shouldn't stop you from giving it your best and pursuing it. You won't know for sure until you try it," Suga added.
"Exactly. Just ask her out and whatever happens, happens. We'll be here for you no matter the outcome," Daichi said. The rest of the guys chimed in their agreements.
"Okay. I'll try," Hinata said. "Thanks everyone. I'll keep you updated."
"Okay, good luck!" they cheered before they began to leave one by one until only Kageyama and Hinata were left.
"Hinata-boke," Kageyama called out.
"What?" Hinata asked with suspicion.
"Don't stress. I think Yachi likes you too," he said.
"Why do you say that?" Hinata asked with raised eyebrows.
"Observation," Kageyama answered before hanging up.
Hinata stared at his blank screen before gathering the resolution to finally ask Yachi out. It was now or never and he was adamant about making it work, especially since Kageyama told him she was interested in him too.
"Hinata, are you okay?" Yachi asked towards the end of the volleyball practice. It was successful for the most part, but she noticed Hinata was distracted.
How?
He kept getting slammed in the face by the ball and his speed and jumps weren't as tight as before. Even Kageyama smacked him around. But that bit wasn't much out of the ordinary.
"Yeah, I'm okay. Why?" Hinata squeaked as he wiped the sweat from his face. Yachi blinked before chuckling at his squeak. It has been a while since she last heard his high pitched tone of voice.
"No reason. You just seemed distracted," she answered as she swept her long hair back. Then she looked over at their new lady manager who was talking up a storm with the first and second year boys. She was a different breed than her and Shimizu-senpai who were quiet for the most part.
"Oh, yeah well, I have a lot on my mind," he mumbled as he looked down.
"Just do it, idiot!" Kageyama shouted from across the gym. Everyone turned to look at Hinata whose face was beet red.
"I-uh-argh," he groaned as his stomach acted up. Then he took off running towards the restrooms with Yachi calling his name behind.
"Stupid Kageyama, stupid!" Hinata hissed as he found himself in the restroom, a bit more calm now that he wasn't in front of Yachi. "Okay, you can do this Shoyo," he told himself as he looked at his reflection.
His orange hair retained its spiked look but hung a little longer than it did in his first and second year. He gained more muscle and got just a bit taller. He also wanted to say he calmed down a lot compared to before, but he was still an energetic mess.
Splashing water on his cold face, Hinata calmed down. "Okay. You're going to approach her, pull her to the side, and casually ask to walk home with her tonight. On the way, casually veer her to a hangout spot and show her I'm interested. But argh!" he exclaimed as he scratched his head.
"How do I do that?! All I know is volleyball!"
"Hinata? Are you okay?"
Yachi's voice almost made him let out a scream from shock but thankfully, he contained it.
"What do I do? What do I do? What do I do?!" he whisper-yelled to himself. Thankfully, no one else was in the restroom as it was after school hours and other club activities were practically over.
Suddenly, the door opened and Yachi tripped in with a yelp before the door was closed.
"Yachi!" Hinata shouted upon seeing her. "What are you doing in there?"
"I-I-I was pushed in!" she stammered as she closed her eyes tight in fear she would see someone exposed.
"By who?" Hinata asked as he rushed to the door. It was locked. "Oi! Let us out!" he shouted as he pounded on the door. There was no answer. Instead, his phone buzzed and Hinata saw it was Kageyama who texted him with a devil face emoji.
Hinata hiccupped, knowing Kageyama wasn't going to open that door until he confessed to Yachi and got an answer.
"A-are you-" began Yachi with a trembling voice as her eyes remained closed.
"Oh, yeah. Um, everything is covered," Hinata answered for her, a mad blush on his own cheeks from this ridiculous setting for what he was about to do.
"O-okay," Yachi stammered as she slowly peeked her eyes open. Then she bowed before Hinata with sincere apologies slipping through her lips. "Honestly, someone pushed me in! I didn't- I wouldn't-!"
"I know. Don't worry, Yachi. I don't think of you as a pervert," laughed Hinata in hopes to calm both her and him down. At this point, he seated himself on the ground with a sigh. "I think I know who the culprit is anyway," he added.
"Who?" asked Yachi as she took a seat near him. She was close enough to keep a comfortable conversation but far enough to not be in each other's personal bubble.
"Kageyama."
"But why?" she asked with a frown. It made no sense.
She hugged her knees to keep from trembling. Not from the cold, but from being next to Hinata in a somewhat small space. It was too much for her heart to handle. But she learned how to somewhat control her outbursts. Only when she was really flustered did she go into apology beast-mode.
"Well…" Hinata trailed off as he began to fidget.
"Hinata?"
With whatever last resolve he had, Hinata decided to take Tanaka and Noya's advice and just be upfront with Yachi. He twisted his body around until he faced Yachi head on, startling the poor dear at the sudden movement.
"Yachi, I have something to tell you. I've been meaning to say it but I just didn't know how. And even now I don't know how, but I'm taking a plunge. I don't care how it sounds or what your answer will be, but please hear me out," he began in one breath. Before Yachi could even mutter a sound, Hinata continued.
"I like you! More than a friend or the lady manager of Karasuno's boys volleyball team. I like you to the point where my head spins being in the same space as you. I like you more than, and I can't believe I'm saying this, but more than volleyball itself! Will you please go out with me?" he asked. He didn't realize how close he had gotten to Yachi until he noticed her beet red face and open mouth.
"I'm sorry!" he freaked out as he threw himself back. "I know it's a lot and you probably don't believe me. Heck, I probably wouldn't believe a thing like this considering how we've been since our first year but I do mean it and I-" he rambled before Yachi's high pitched voice cut in.
"Yes!"
Hinata blinked. Yachi blinked. Both of their faces grew red, their eyes wide.
"Um, what?" Hinata asked, not sure what she said yes to.
"Um, yes. To going out with you," she mumbled as she toyed with the hem of her sweatshirt. Her long hair curtained her face.
Hinata fell backwards against the door, quite shocked at her response. "She said yes," he muttered. Then he faced her. "Really? Yes? You're not just saying that because you feel bad for me?!"
Yachi looked up and shook her head. "No. I mean it. I...I like you too. I have for some time now. I just...I didn't want to say anything because, well, volleyball seemed to be the only thing on your mind," she whispered.
"Baka, baka, baka," Hinata muttered to himself as he smacked his forehead. Then he took a deep breath and faced Yachi seriously.
"I like you, Yachi. And I seriously want to go out with you," he told her which caused her to hold her breath. Then she smiled and teared up before throwing herself at him, knocking the two backwards.
The two laughed in relief as Hinata hugged her back. The sudden sound of a camera click made them realize their current location and position, and when they turned their heads to where the sound came from, they found Kageyama peeking through the door with his phone pointed at them.
"Ka-Kageyama!" screamed Hinata as he and Yachi jumped apart from each other.
Kageyama gave an evil grin before he took off running. "W-wait! No, stop! Don't send it!" Hinata yelled. "Yachi, see you at the school gate after practice!" he added as he faced Yachi before he took off after Kageyama.
Yachi touched her cheeks as she stared in disbelief at the open bathroom door. She was still on the floor until a male student walked in, causing them both to scream before Yachi zoomed out with apologies spewing from her lips.
Meanwhile, the group chat of the Karasuno original players blew up with all sorts of text messages based on the picture Kageyama sent to them. Another picture was sent shortly after of Kageyama's evil grin while a red faced and desperate Hinata chased after him.
Suffice to say, Hinata never lived it down. But it was certainly a Karasuno confession to remember.
