There once were two scientists whose names were Dr. Wily and Dr. Light. Dr. Light, with Wily as his assistant, made robots for a living, which, over time, became increasingly intelligent. Dr. Wily was unable to come up with any ideas of his own and began to get jealous of the attention Light was receiving. So, one day, in the year 200X, he spontaneously decided he was going to take over the world.
As the years passed, Wily accumulated thousands of robots which he had designed to aid him in exactly this. But despite the sheer number of them, Wily discovered they could be defeated rather easily. He didn't feel like creating new, more powerful robots, so Wily decided to simply steal some from Dr. Light, who he heard had built a few for himself, and employ the lesser robots as guards for their future fortresses.
That night, Wily snuck into his former friend's laboratory. He stole six robots that Dr. Light was using for cleaning, and, despite his aforementioned inability to design good robots, managed to reprogram them for evil. Now the robots were devoted to Dr. Wily and his mission of taking over the world, and perhaps the Moon as well.
But, unbeknownst to Wily, there was another robot he didn't know existed. While Wily was busy in his lab, Dr. Light had discreetly built a robot to be his assistant in the lab. His name was Rockman. When Dr. Light got word of Dr. Wily's plan, he decided to convert Rockman into a fighting robot, complete with one arm that was a gun. The newly-christened Mega Man, equipped with three lives with a finite number of hit points for each, then bid his creator farewell and set off on his mission to defeat Dr. Wily.
After a while, Mega Man had defeated four of Dr. Wily's six Robot Masters: Fire Man, Guts Man, Bomb Man, and Cut Man. Cut Man had been especially easy to kill—he had simply backed him into a corner and shot at him repeatedly while periodically jumping over Cut Man's boomeranging Rolling Cutters. He had lost two lives already traversing Guts Man's fortress and its moving platforms with holes in them that desperately needed to be repaired. Mega Man wasn't worried about being on his last life, though. If he shot enough enemies, surely they would eventually drop some 1UPs.
With only two Robot Masters left before he reached Dr. Wily's castle, Mega Man entered Ice Man's territory, immediately being thrown into an icy, Arctic-like landscape. Snowflakes pelted his face and the harsh winds made his eyes sting, but he kept going. Flying robotic penguins dove at him, but they only had one hit point and Mega Man killed them all easily.
Afterwards, Mega Man leapt down a tunnel into a pit inhabited by a lone Gabyoall, a spiny creature that moved back and forth on the ground and was too low for Mega Man to shoot at. Mega Man found that the pit was too deep for him to jump out of. But when he was about to give up hope of escape, blocks started appearing in the air above him. They appeared and disappeared in different places in a pattern. Mega Man quickly learned this pattern and soon made it out of the hole.
It was strange, he thought. It was like he had been here dozens of times before, yet this was the first time he had been here to his recollection. So why did it feel so easy for him to get out of the pit? Did he have amnesia? He quickly disregarded the logistics of this as he navigated a second series of appearing and disappearing blocks with frightening accuracy.
Then came an area with two deep abysses in the snow, one right after the other. The chasms were so wide that one's only hope of crossing was by jumping on the Foot Holders floating around just above them. Foot Holders were robots whose heads were flat eniugh for one to stand on. These robots also shot bullets out of their sides. Dr. Light had warned Mega Man before he left that this area was dangerous, but it didn't look too bad.
Taking a deep breath, Mega Man began hopping from one Foot Holder to another, strategically timing his jumps to avoid the bullets. Soon, he made it over the first chasm. Going over the second chasm was similarly easy, at least until the flying penguins returned. The penguins nearly knocked Mega Man off the Foot Lockers, but he managed not to fall off.
The land soon reappeared over Mega Man and he jumped down. He was finally home free.
Suddenly, the final Foot Holder shot two last bullets, the right one striking Mega Man. This not only caused him to flash, but also caused him to slide toward the edge of the cliff. His eyes widened in horror as he tried valiantly to correct this, to turn back around, but the ice was so slippery that this was impossible.
Within a split-second, Mega Man was no longer in frame. The background music stopped abruptly, and there was a brief moment of silence... followed by the sound of a synthesized explosion.
