Grief

Happy was not a way to describe how Frederick Chase felt right now. To think that his seven year old daughter preferred living in the streets rather than at home with him and her step family! Where had he gone wrong? Had he not treated Annabeth properly? He had known raising a demigod was no piece of cake, but honestly the number of monster attacks had definitely not helped his sanity.

He asked Helen, his wife, 'What happened the night before? Did Annabeth say anything?' 'She kept on screaming at night, something about spiders, but when I went to check on her, there was nothing there! I thought she was jealous of her brothers and that was her way of getting attention.'

Frederick paled, he remembered an old myth, how Athena turned a prideful woman who insulted her into the first spider. Arachne. Helen must have noticed his reaction because her eyes widened, 'Please don't tell me that this has something to do with her being a demigod! I chased (pun intended) her away didn't I?'

Oh gods, he was so blind! If only he had known what his baby girl had been going through! He found himself praying to Athena: Please, please keep my daughter safe! Please show me her path, let me know she's okay!

A bright light filled the room, when Frederick opened his eyes, he was staring at a dark haired woman with grey eyes, very like Annabeth. 'Who-What-How?' Helen spluttered. Frederick flashed back to seven years ago, when the grey eyed lady had shown up at his door, holding a golden basket in her hands. A gift. Their daughter.

He laid a hand on Helen's shoulder, 'Athena.' He stated. The goddess smiled, 'Yes Frederick, it's been a while since we last met.' Helen, who had gotten over the shock of her husband's ex appearing in the middle of the room said, 'Where's Annabeth?' Athena's regal features took on a look of disappointment, 'You did not care for her the way I'd wanted you to. She has chosen her path. There is nothing you can do. I will guide her.' Frederick found his voice, 'What do you mean there is nothing we can do?' 'She has chosen her destiny, she will find a camp for half-bloods such as herself.'

Frederick couldn't believe it, the goddess who he hadn't seen for nearly a decade suddenly appears, just to tell him that his poor daughter was beyond his help! As if reading his thoughts, Athena said, 'I have come to show you a glimpse of her future. She will make me proud. One of my best creations. Farewell Frederick.' Before he could say anything, another bright light filled the room.
