"We're going to be best friends forever, right?"
"Of course, we are. Nothing could ever separate us; you'll always be my first draft."
…
"Cullen! Get your head out of your ass boy!" Coach Clapp barked at the captain of the baseball team.
Edward whipped his head around in time, to see a baseball hurling throughout the air towards him.
"Catch it Cullen!"
"Glove up!"
As his teammates shouted orders at him, it was a little too late.
"CLANK"
The baseball hit his helmet full force, the force sent Edward falling to the floor, with a loud groan from him.
"Damn it! Why did she have to enter my mind for a split second… Who am I kidding, I'll always will think about her, the way her laugh still echoes in my memories. After three years this should be concerning?"
"No what should be concerning, is the fact you're talking to yourself man!" Jasper said extending his arm out for Edward. "You alright, captain?"
Edward took his friends hand, as Jasper pulled him back to his feet. "Yep, just slowly dying."
Jasper chuckled.
"Did you really not see the ball?"
"Not at first… I was a bit distracted." Edward admitted, removing his helmet.
Jasper rolled his eyes at him and folded his arms across his chest.
"Hey! Don't look at me like that!"
"At least it was only practice."
"I'll pay more attention on Monday, I promise…"
Hopefully Edward thought to himself, following Jasper back to the locker room.
…
"Hale and Cullen! The men I wanted to see." Yorkie announced.
Both boys looked at each other, before looking at their other teammate, "NO!" They said in union.
"Oh, C'mon! You don't even know what I'm about to ask?" Eric explained.
"And the answers still a no, look at what happened last time!" Jasper cried.
"How many times do I have to apologise about the car?"
"Until my insurance premiums are back down to an affordable price."
Edward watched as his fellow Spartans bickered about the past…
"And I'm helping you pay towards your insurance! Look all I wanted to ask is if you would care to join me at the bar tonight, for a few rounds?"
"Count me in!" Jasper piped up, "You coming, Cullen?"
"When have I ever said no to having a drink with the guys?"
"Good." Eric said wiping his brow, "phew, if you said no, I would have thought I gave you a concussion, with my wicked fast ball."
"You aren't that fast, Eric."
"Tell that to my 180mph fast ball earlier!" Yorkie stated imitating him swinging the bat.
"Don't make me laugh." Edward rolled his eyes, "I feel just fine with a dinger to the old helmet here." Edward stated with a smirk.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah. We get it you both have big di…"
Jasper was suddenly cut off, by the coach.
"Listen up! This next season we need to work even harder, then we ever have before. Last year was good but getting knocked out in the playoffs was painful. I know my Spartans can be better than that."
"YES COACH!"
"Good. Now remember this is your last free day you guys have until this season ends, so go and do what young people do these days. But not too much, we don't need another catastrophe, Eric!"
The whole baseball team erupted into laughter.
"See you all on Monday." Coach Clapp stated before leaving the locker room.
…
Edward entered the campus local bar, he was wearing a white dress shirt, with short sleeves that revealed a few of his tattoos, matched with a maroon-coloured jeans with a few rips in and finally matched with his new Nike white air force one's.
Edward was playing catch up as most of his teammates had been there for a while. Instead of ordering at the bar, he went straight to the dancefloor, being the goofball that his is and dancing his butt off, to Blondie's heart of glass. His friends supplied him with the drink as he kept on supplying the moves.
"I'm going to the roof top!" A drunk Eric slurred to his mates.
"What for?" Tyler questioned.
"I need to pee!" Eric squealed out, as he danced his way from his friends.
"Oh god! Don't urinate on anyone, Yorkie!" Tyler yelled out across the dancefloor. Making a few people stare at him.
…
Later, Cullen continued to show off all his moves, and he didn't care who was watching. By this point he had forgotten how much he had to drink, was he on to his fifth? Tenth? He was that far gone, he was doing what the coach had told him to do, before the season started and he was taking the much-needed edge off! He didn't want to think about all the scouts and people watching him for his senior year of college, Edward didn't want that pressure to think about tonight.
He was that oblivious he didn't notice his sister approaching him, "Hey loser." Alice shouted over the music.
"Ali, Hey!"
"A little bit wasted already, are we?"
"No! Not at all!"
"You need fresh air, come to the roof top with me?"
Alice guided her drunk brother up to the roof top, he stumbled up a few stairs not because he was tipsy, but because he was using his spare hand to cover his eyes.
"Edward what on earth are you doing? It would help if you could remove your hand from your eyes."
"No! Never!"
"C'mon, stop being a dimwit." Alice said as she began to remove his hand.
"AHHH! I don't want to see Eric's pee-pee!" He cried out.
"Eric's "pee-pee" is not out, I promise."
"How do you know? You looked! Don't look at my friend, you perv!" At this point Alice had enough of her brothers drunk ass and wanted answers.
"How dare you call me a perv! Now tell me why the hell you're this drunk for!?"
"The real question here, is why aren't you this drunk for?" Edward said with a smug look on his face.
"Even when you are wasted, you still are a smartass." Alice mentioned with a roll of her eyes, "To answer your question I know my limits, so I don't look like a crazy fool like you!"
"Crazy… You think I'm crazy? That hurt Ali…" He starts to sob.
"Oh brother, you're a disgrace to our family, when you get like this."
Edward was taken back by his twins' statement, "I'm a disgrace? Are you sure, I'm Dad's pride and joy."
"Now I know you're wasted, clearly I'm the favourite." She said with a flick of her hair.
"You know what Alice, it's true. I was just the unwanted package deal…" And the sobbing began again, as he let his head drop to his sister's shoulder.
"I can't deal with your drunkenness anymore; I'm taking you back to your teammates so they can take you home."
"Why can't you take me home?"
"One you're huge, you would probably crush me and two Jasper."
"So much hate from the little girl I helped raised." He cried even more.
"Edward, We're literally twins! You didn't raise me!"
"And so much sass too! Urgh, I don't feel so good…"
Alice took a step back from Edward, just in time for all his insides to come back out.
Tyler made his way over to the two siblings, "God dude, how much did you drink?"
"You can handle this right, Tyler?" Alice mentioned before running away from the puddle of sick.
"TRAITOR!" Edward called after his sister, before another round of sick made its way out.
"Mike! Come and help me with our baboon of a captain!"
"I'm the baboon!" Edward waved at his friends.
"Can the ground just swallow me up, right about now." Tyler wondered aloud.
…
The following Monday…
"When do you ever not read?" Rose questioned.
"I won't learn if I don't." Bella shot back.
"Not true, I'm learning a lot right now and my nose ain't stuck in a book." She mentioned as she took a seat in the college canteen.
"Fair point, but I need to learn things of importance, like why the hell I thought becoming a sports physical therapist was a smart idea… I must hate myself…"
"See Hun, I don't need books when I have these looks."
This made Bella chuckle at her friend… "Hey! Should I be offended?"
"Oh sweetie, you do you! Me on the other hand I'm going to work in my Dad's garage after we graduate, so I don't care whether I get my degree or not. I already have a job lined up."
"Living the dream, I see."
"As always!"
Bella closed over her book, "I need another coffee, would you like one?"
"Only if you come shopping with me."
"Rose, you have millions of clothes."
"But you know what today is."
"I believe it's an average Monday." She pretended to ponder. "Also known as the worst day of my week."
"Bella, stop, don't be such a drag!"
"Why should I go shopping? If I'm not attending the game."
"Because you should go!" Rose encouraged.
"And what?" Bella put her head into her hands and took a deep breath, "C'mon Rose what do you want me to do? Should I walk right up to him and say, "Hey, can you remember me? We used to be best friends until you turned into a massive dick, but I'm still an idiot to still have feelings for you, so take me to bed!"
"I don't have no problem with that, it's bringing out your inner dominatrix and I'm living for it!"
"Oh, shut up," Bella chuckled as she playfully slapped Rose's arm. "You're a horrible influence."
"I know I am!"
Both girls laughed.
"You know you want to go, Bella."
Of course, Bella, wanted to go, she wanted to be there to cheer him on like she promised to always do… But she now always felt like she was unwanted there and it was embarrassing. Why should she go support the guy that just forgot about her. After a moment she decided that she would go.
"Fine, only if you get me one of those pink drinks from Starbucks!"
"Oh, wait when did little Miss Swan, join the Starbucks crowed I thought you were too good for them typical stereotypes."
Bella rolled her eyes at her best friend, "Do you want me to go with you or not?"
"One pink drink, coming right up!"
…
"So, what are you thinking, the college colours yellow and blue, or are you going for classic baseball colours white and red?"
"Rose, I don't want to look like I'm apart of the team and plus blue and yellow… The only outfit that comes to mind is the cheerleading uniforms, who would wear them colours out of choice… No thanks."
"So white and red it is, you take the left side of the store and I'll take the right!"
"I want something simple!" Bella yelled to her friend.
"BOO, you're boring!"
"I'm not, I just don't want to stick out like a sore thumb!" she cried.
"But that's the point! You definitely need to stand out it's their first game of the season."
"I don't want to look like every other girl at the game!"
"You won't, well there could be some… Maybe just a little over a half."
"I'm just going to go home, what's even the point."
"Sweetie, I've just paid $9 for two trenta pink drinks for you, my bank account is crying!"
"Rose stop being so dramatic, you've still got money to shop. Stop trying to make me feel bad… I was craving them."
"We made a deal."
"We never shook on it!"
"Bella stop being difficult and go look around the store."
"Fine!" Bella sulked away in between the clothes racks.
…
"See you look beautiful, even if its super casual." Rose complimented Bella's outfit.
When they were at the mall, it was difficult to find something that suited Bella's style, so they just picked up a new pair of denim jeans and paired it with one of Bella's old baseball jerseys in the classic white with red stripes on the shoulders. Rose did try to get her to buy some wedged heels, but there was no chance! So, she stuck with her everyday comfy red converse.
"You're just buttering me up, so I don't complain throughout the whole game tonight…"
"Is it working?"
"Not according to the butterflies in my stomach."
"Aww, darling I'll buy you lunch on the way."
"Please don't, I don't want to barf all over the field when I finally see him…"
…
"Are you dead?" Tyler asked as he prodded Edward.
"Urgh…"
"Well, that answers my question, come on man, you've been sleeping it off for two days now. Time to man the fuck up and get over it!"
"Thanks for the inspirational speech, but can you just let me die in peace!" Edward muttered annoyingly as he rolled back over in his bed, "How did you manage to get into my apartment?"
"Jasper gave me a key. Dude I practically live here!"
"Damn it Jasper!"
"Now get up out of bed, we have a game!" Tyler said as he took Edwards quilt from him.
Edward groaned, "I thought I left my parents at home?" he narrowed his eyes at his teammate.
"Ha, ha, very funny Cullen, now you need to eat lunch we have a big game today!"
"Man, I know. Now leave me alone, before I start calling you "Mom"!"
"Fine, I'm going to raid your fridge and eat it all with Jasper!" He said leaving Edward's bedroom.
"Leave my chicken alone!" Edward shouted, flinging himself from his bed and chasing after Tyler.
…
Just before the game, the lads were in the locker room.
"I'm so ready to get out there on that field!" Jasper announced.
"Me too, I've been on edge all day thinking about it." Tyler admitted.
"Less talking, more changing!"
"Yes Captain!"
"I know you just want to see me in my uniform, because it's obviously a turn on for you." Tyler teased with a wink.
"That's it your key is getting revoked!"
Edward lunged at Tyler. Tyler ran behind Jasper, "JASPER PROTECT ME!"
"Edward, calm down it was just a harmless joke…" Jasper explained with his hands up in defence.
"I know… I'm sorry, it's just I would like everything to go perfect tonight, with how many scouts are out there."
"Says the best player on the team!" Mike chimed in with an eye roll.
"That doesn't mean I don't need to do my best, Newton! And I need you guys to back me up on that."
"You know we have your back, always." Jasper mentioned.
The coach decided to walk into the locker room at that moment, "Okay boy's this is going to be a great season, I can feel it in my bones! You have to believe that we can do this, because I do!" Coach Clapp said as he looked around at his team in pride, "Got anything to add captain?"
"Let's go kick some Hawk butt!"
…
"We've got such great seats!" Rose cheered as she sat down on the bleachers.
"I'm not too sure… Perfect for a black eye or a broken nose if the ball comes hurling towards us!"
"Don't be such a Debby downer. I was hoping to see some battering practice from the team, their arses look so good in those pants!"
"Such a perv," Bella laughed. "What would Emmett think?"
"Don't judge, you would think exactly the same way, no matter your relationship status, and I know exactly which players you would be staring at!"
"I think every other girl here does as well… unfortunately…"
"Exactly! Now you can thank me for these incredible seats, as we'll be getting first look."
"Thanks!" Bella said sarcastically.
"Nothing like the smell of fresh cut grass, with a slight breeze and hot men in tight uniform to make my day better!"
"You're such a weirdo."
"And you love me for it!" she said with a wink to her friend.
They both laughed… Bella was starting to feel a bit parched. "I'm going for a drink; would you like one?"
"Another drink! Girl I don't know where you put it all, you must have a steel bladder or something?"
"So, is that a no or a yes?"
Rose rolled her eyes, "Just get me whatever you're having."
…
"NEXT!"
"Hey, can I get 2 large Dr Peppers and the line-up sheet please?"
"Certainly." The guy passes over the line-up sheet as he goes over to make the drinks.
Bella scans over the list, it makes her heart warm up when she notices a few of her old mates names, but when she stopped on number 17 her heart started to flutter. She had saw his name a millions of times on one of these sheets and she even knew that he would be playing this year. But seeing Edward's name make her heart sore like it was about to burst right out of her chest.
"Miss?"
"Oh, sorry!"
"It's all good. That'll be $12.50 please."
You what! It's a good thing Rose supplied her with her pink drinks earlier or they would have been sharing a large Dr Pepper between them. But $6.25 for just one drink what a rip off, now that's how us students fund the college along with our tuition.
"Thanks… I guess."
Bella made her way back to the stands, with the two most expensive soft drinks she bought in her entire existence. As she made her way over to Rose, she could see someone sitting in her spot.
Alice Cullen, what it would take not to pour the drinks over her head, "Bella look who's just joined us!" Rose said with fake happiness.
Alice is the type of person to act bubbly, but she could change in a heartbeat and chew you up and spit you back out if you aren't careful.
Bella placed the drinks on the grass and folded her arms over her chest.
"Look at you, so cute in your little outfit! Are you here to support my brother?" She questioned with a giggle.
"And if I was?" Bella snapped back, showing she wasn't afraid.
"Oh no reason, I was just curious?" She eyed Bella up and down, "Because we both know Edward's favourite colours are the traditional baseball red and white."
Bella rolled her eyes.
"Well, I can tell when I'm unwanted, it was nice to see you again Rose," she turned to Bella. "It's always a pleasure Bella." She says with a sinister look. "I'm off to the dugout to see the boys before the game, toodles."
Rose and Bella watched as she walked away, waiting until she was out of ear shot. "Well, that was sweet of her to drop by." Bella narrowed her eyes at her best friend, "I mean she's the devil!"
"Shut up, Rose! Let's just watch the game…" Bella passed her, one of the Dr Peppers.
Rose took a sip of her drink, trying to get out of her best friends bad books. "Wow this really is refreshing!"
"It should be for $6.25." Bella muttered.
"YOU WHAT!" Rose choked out her drink, doing a spit take on the poor person that sat Infront of her. "I'm so sorry!" She exclaimed to the person Infront as she patted them dry with a napkin.
"Get off me, you freak! It's not enough that you spit on me, now you're touching me!" The stranger yelled at her, before stalking off to another seat.
Rose's eyes grew wide with shock. Bella pulled her best friend into a hug "There, there. We all know you were just trying to help that horrible man." Bella soothed her while giving a few gentle pats on the back.
…
Announcement:
The Forks Spartans are up 3-1 in the middle of the 7th. Time for the 7th inning stretch.
Both girls stand after a much long waited time. "I'm going to go walk around and see if I can find anyone, I know. Are you good here?" Rose asked.
"Is my company not good enough?! What's it with you offending me today, first the book now you don't want to be seen with me!" Bella pretended to fake cry.
"Truth is I'm going to hide in the bathroom, the guy I spat on earlier keeps on giving me the death glares…"
"Rose he ain't going to do anything!"
"How do you know, just look at him, Bella!" Bella looks over to find the stranger sipping his drink as he stares at her friend.
"Yeah, you're right he definitely has it out for you my friend!" Bella looked back over to him, to now find the stranger walking towards them. "I'll protect you Rose… Rose… Rose!"
Bella looks around to find her friend legging It to the women's toilets.
The guy soon walked past Bella and made his way to the trash can.
"Typical Rose freaking out over nothing!" She laughed too herself.
"More like typical Bella talking to herself."
"ANGELA!" Bella squealed in delight as she pulled her long-time friend into a hug. "I haven't saw you since… Oh, I'm so sorry…"
"Hey, life happens don't feel bad, seriously it's water under the bridge." Angela reassured her friend. "Are you here with anyone?"
"Just Rose… she's busy hiding at the moment."
"Hiding? Do I even want to know?"
"She accidently spat her drink on a scary dude, he kept on giving her death glares and when he stood up to get rid of his rubbish. Rose thought he was coming after her, so she fled the scene." Bella giggled, "Enough about Rose, How's Tyler? I saw he was on the line-up sheet."
"He's still funnier then ever, but I would say in the past few months he's became the mother of our little group… We miss you, Bella. It's not the same without you."
Bella felt a bit of a pull back, her mind was telling her to abort this conversation, it was still a bit too raw… She looked to the floor wishing it would just disappear under her feet, taking the earth and her with it.
"Oh gosh, I do apologise I didn't mean to make things awkward… Tyler would be seriously pissed at me right now, I should have kept my big mouth shut."
"It's okay! Seriously… I miss hanging with you all as well, maybe when Edward eventually gets drafted, we can all hang again."
"I see you are still having high hopes for him."
"Obviously, he's an amazing ball player, he deserves to be scouted by anyone of those scouts." She says as she points across to the private stands, "I know he will, because I would never doubt his abilities."
"Wow! Bella, I wish he could hear you right now. It's so amazing how you can speak so highly of him after everything that happened…"
"ANGELA!"
"I guess that's your cue to leave?"
"Certainly, seems so. Enjoy the rest of the game Bella!" And with that she was off.
…
"Was that Angela?" Rose asked on her return.
"Oh, so she returns! You know Rose if Coach Frew could have saw you run the way you did before, I'm sure he would have dragged you back to high school to finish off track and field, which you failed…"
"Hey! In my defence I'm too pretty to run and break a sweat."
"Sure, sure. Well at least we know if you ever get into a fight you are a flight person." Bella chuckled.
"Oh, Hun. I make love not war, I'll only ever attack if they break one of my nails!"
"Good to know, for when I need psycho Rose!"
"Girl! I'll go psycho anytime for you, now stop putting it off! What did Angela want?"
Announcement:
A fast ball the middle is fouled off by batter 61 Mike Newton after it hit number 17 Edward Cullen in the face mask! It looks like he's down. That was brutal to watch folks, I bet the Forks captain will be feeling it for days to come, it looks like he might have a concussion, he's being taken in for medical assistance.
We'll take a short interval as Cullen's replacement Johnson gets warmed up.
Bella's heart was suddenly in her throat, her heartbeat was echoing in her body and it felt like it was getting louder and louder… What should she do?
"Do you want to go check?" Rose suggested, as Bella's eyes grew wider at her idea. "Okay maybe not… What about Angela, text her! She's probably back there with Tyler."
Bella nodded in agreement as she pulled out her phone from her back pocket… Her hands shook in panic, causing her to drop her phone to the ground.
"Here let me do it, don't worry sweetie we'll find out, just take a seat."
Bella sat back down as she handed her phone over to Rose.
R: Hey Angela, it's Rose on Bella's phone. Are you downstairs?
A: Yeah. The therapist is just checking him over, He says it's a concussion and they're going to take him to the ER for more testing.
R: Okay, keep me updated!
A: Is she okay?
R: Take a wild guess.
A: The poor thing, I'll update when I know more.
R: Thanks Ang.
Rose handed Bella her phone back. "How is he?" She croaked.
"It's concussion, they're taken him to hospital for more tests. Angela said she would keep us updated."
"Okay…" Bella said with a weak smile.
"I think we better get you home."
"I think that's best…"
