Author's Note: I have made a grave mistake writing this, and I have all the regrets, but hey, this is a thing now and it plans on staying that way. This cheeky B****** of a story was supposed to be an extended1-shot that spanned the period of five days. Surprise! It decided to sucker punch me and hide that goalpost in the dumpster. So... yah... yet another multi from me because it didn't want to be anything else.

I know a few of my readers on These Shadows That Bind Us asked for Tony's side of things while Harry was down for the count for five straight days, and this is the outcome. So buckle up, y'all, because somehow this mini series is going to mold a family from the chaos in six chapters and it will be good. It isn't going to be easy because handling an Enemies to Lovers trope needs careful approach and execution to make it realistic and not unhealthy. You don't need to read that story to understand this one, but feel free to do so if you are so inclined.

Without further adu... Here is the story of These Shadows That Bind Us in Tony Stark's perspective. :)

We Were Not Ourselves

Day 0

Everything happened so fast. One moment Tony was speaking somewhat civilly to Loki who was trying to open a portal into space right above their heads and send an alien army onto planet Earth, and the next he was thrown back into the bar by a long, stringy black thing. Tony watched helplessly as Harry was engulfed by the same shadow-substance that just touched him, and it soon had a hold of Loki by the neck, shoving them down into the floor with such force it was a wonder how the ground wasn't giving way.

After getting back to his feet to get a better line of sight, Tony saw a pool of darkness was what was engulfing Loki and not the actual floor itself. Tony followed the black trail up to the ceiling where it seemed to bleed through it as well, and not a moment later, a loud mix of crunching and fuse-like explosion sounds were heard from above. Harry was in the center of the black tornado, completely focused on Loki. Tony had no way to him as the black string barred him from them, keeping him at the bar.

Then, Horns spoke, Tony strained his hearing to try and make out what was said from where he stood. "Pl...please. I kn-know who you are… I c-can help…"

Harry collapsed to the floor in that moment, all the darkness that surrounded him and the suspect dissipated and seemed to have been sucked right back into him. Tony didn't hesitate bolting to his kids' side, completely ignoring Loki nearby gasping for air on the ground before passing out. He gathered Harry into his arms, checking him for any injuries, but the only thing that stood out was the lightning scar that splayed across his forehead was an inky black color instead of a light brown. The scar always seemed to follow the small veins that would otherwise be hidden under the skin there, and the blackness made it even more apparent. He checked his eyes, but pulled back immediately when he saw they were also completely black. Shaking, Tony gently pressed Harry to him before lifting him off the floor.

Happy had burst through then, gun in hand as he checked the perimeter. Tony jerked his head toward the unconscious Loki on the floor as he passed, and Happy immediately had his gun focused on them as he approached. When Tony headed for the elevator, however, another wispy black string emitted from Harry's fingers and shot over to Loki. Tony turned to watch it wrap around their left wrist, and it pulled their arm toward Harry due to their distance.

Happy turned white as a ghost, but maintained his composure as he kept his gun trained on the intruder and tried to ignore the shadow-thread thing.

"Huh," Tony said, stepping away slowly to see what would happen.

Harry's arm tugged back, resisting the motion. Tony let out a sigh, not sure what to do with this predicament.

"What's going on, Boss?" Happy said, eyeing the black tendril yanking on the unconscious person's arm.

"Not sure, really," Tony replied.

It was perfect timing that Thor showed up hammer-a-blazing. He stormed the place immediately from the balcony to see what was going on. Upon seeing his unconscious brother, he looked to Tony and Harry, taking note of the black thread-like thing connecting the two before hovering in-between them.

"What is the meaning of this?" Thor asked, gesturing to Harry and his brother with his hammer. "What happened?"

"I was kind of hoping you could tell me," Tony admitted, shrugging. "They seem to be tethered, though. I can't go any further and I need to get Harry somewhere safe."

Thor went to gently pick up Loki then, following Tony to the elevator with Happy on his heels, gun still drawn and aimed at its target. The black thread pulsated some as it shrunk when the distance closed between Harry and Loki. Tony took the liberty to check Harry's pulse, unable to feel anything, he started to panic.

"That is not needed, sir," Thor said, eying Happy's weapon.

Happy looked to Tony, who gave a silent nod, and he uncocked the gun before holstering it.

"Sir," an all-too yet very comforting voice said.

"J, you have no idea how reliving it is to hear you again. Contact Dr. Hale immediately," Tony said, not hesitating to utilize his AI.

"Already on it, Sir," JARVIS assured. "I detect a pulse from both unconscious subjects, but they both are very weak and seem to be functioning as a single unit."

"My brother will persevere. He always does," Thor said, dismissing any concern. "What of the little one?"

"Single unit?" Tony asked, ignoring Thor.

"It is as if one is keeping the other alive," JARVIS said slowly. "It is certainly an anomaly, but I strongly advise to not separate these two for risk of causing further harm and complication to this complex condition."

Thor's expression changed then at this new information, looking between Harry and Loki now.

"I need to take them to Asgard. The healers there will know what to do about this," Thor suggested. "It is not an earthly situation to be dealt with."

"That is for me to decide, Point Break," Tony snapped. "You are not taking my kid off-world."

The elevator doors opened to Tony's suite floor and he immediately brought Harry to his own room, gently laying him on the oversized bed with the bright yellow duvet Harry picked for his room there. Happy remained outside the room.

"Lay your brother beside him," Tony commanded, making sure the thread-like cuffs on both of them would be as close as they could get without touching hands.

"This situation would best be handled in Asgard. There's nothing you can do here for them," Thor said, still holding Loki, albeit still close-ish to Harry.

"Watch me."

"My people will know what to do with them and find answers to what this is."

Tony turned on Thor, tempted to get in the gods face if he wasn't holding someone else between them. "I have a feeling you won't let me follow, yea?"

"That is not possible," Thor said dismissively.

"Figured as much. They are staying here. Put Horns next to Harry, now," Tony said again, more firmly this time.

Thor did as was told, but visibly appeared frustrated by the arrangement. "You are being unreasonable with something you do not understand, Stark."

"And what is it I am doing that is not reasonable to you, huh?" Tony hissed, struggling to keep the panic subdued and the tears from shedding. "Because as far as I am concerned, I am doing whatever I can to figure out what happened to my son!"

"Which you will not be able to do unless you allow me to—"

Tony glared at Thor then, silently threatening him to continue with his absurd response.

"Do you understand what is going on?" Tony asked mockingly, eyes burning into Thor. "Because if you do then it'd be amazing teamwork to divulge something pretty important right now, wouldn't it?"

Thor didn't back away, holding his ground against Tony, but he wasn't going to waver, not when it comes to Harry. "I could tell you if you'd just—"

"Over my dead body," Tony deadpanned. "Would you let a god you just met and learned about their existence practically yesterday take your kid away from you to somewhere you can't follow to trust a claim that their medicine will be better than yours? Because as far as I'm concerned, I am doing everything right in the parent's guidebook so far from the stranger danger chapter."

"If I were in your position, I would listen to reason if my child was in danger and accept the help offered to me," Thor tried to explain, "especially when it comes to something out of your control or understanding."

"Yeah, sure," Tony scoffed, giving his attention over to Harry.

For a long time the two were silent. Tony drowned in the chaos of his mind while Thor patiently stood in the background. He hated the idea of not knowing what was going on, and mixing that with not understanding the what of it was an infuriating outcome. It never stopped Tony from working through complex things before, but this he had no idea how to approach or even deal with. The biggest problem is that he refused to let Harry out of his sight.

"I will not let you take him," Tony quietly said, staring at his very still and unconscious son.

"Your child is not the only one involved with this," Thor responded, moving toward Loki's side of the bed. "You cannot take my brother hostage."

"Watch me." Tony shifted his sharp gaze back to Thor. "It's their fault Harry is in this situation, so I have every right to hold them here until I get answers."

"If you would only listen—"

"I did listen, and I didn't like what you had to say," Tony snapped. "Harry is not leaving with you."

"Transporting them is not recommended," JARVIS gently interrupted, "Their condition is critical at this point. Dr. Hale is inbound as we speak to further assess the situation."

"Thanks, J. At least someone is speaking sense." Tony focused his attention back on Thor now. "You could do me a solid and actually offer an explanation as to what is going on rather than covering it with an excuse to kidnap my kid."

"I do not have the answers you seek unless I take them," Thor deadpanned, glowering at Tony. "And I can assure you that Loki will pay the price for their crimes here on Midgard back at Asgard."

"Perfect. Wonderful. Great team player. That will help tremendously," Tony said sarcastically, throwing his hands up in the air in exasperation. "When your brother wakes up, I'm going to kill them," he hissed.

"Not if I get to them first," Thor stated, heading toward the door of the bedroom after hearing the elevator ping. "I will keep the others out until your doctor is here, but we are not finished on this matter."

"Yes, make yourself useful and keep them entertained."

Thor left without another word.

"Sir, the others are now just arriving, should I debrief them?"

Tony raspberried, needing to find somewhere to sit before he fainted. "Yeah. But be vague. I don't want the circus crowding in here."

Rubbing his eyes as he puzzled out everything, he let the quiet settle as he waited for the pediatrician to arrive to evaluate Harry. In the meantime, JARVIS would inform him if anything drastic changed between them. Thor was decent enough to bar everyone from entering the bedroom while Tony paced the room, sat down on the couch to fidget, and returned to pacing some more.

A ruckus was heard not too long into the night, and after a beat of honing in on the voices mingling outside, Tony found himself ripping open the door and shoving Thor aside in order to get to Rhodey who was working his way toward the room. He embraced him immediately, burying his face in the crook of Rhodey's neck when he returned the gesture. Tony felt his entire body shake, unable to keep it together now, he dared not utter a word lest the sob he held back escaped. It would crumble him.

Rhodey led them back to the room while practically carrying Tony, ignoring the overlapping voices berating him in the process. and slammed the door in their faces to silence them. It really was none of their business anymore, why were they hanging around? Thor and Tony had the situation handled, it only involved them for the moment.

Tony got situated on the couch nearby, his cuddle bear sat beside him so he could latch back on him. It was only then did he realize that he was crying silent tears, and there was no way of stopping them now. Thankfully, Rhodey let him take the time to get it all out of his system, thoroughly drenching the navy tshirt he was wearing. He combed his fingers through Tony's hair in the meantime, keeping him close as he surveyed the room to pass the time. JARVIS obviously briefed him, which was perfect because Tony had no way of properly speaking right now.

It took Tony a while to settle down, the exhaustion hit him like a ton of bricks, but he felt much better curled around his honey bear. Rhodey always made things better for him, and he could always count on it.

"I came as soon as I heard," Rhodes said quietly when he felt it was safe to speak, still stroking his fingers through Tony's hair.

Tony took in a shaky breath, adjusting himself to rest his head on his shoulder instead of his stomach. He didn't need to talk to show he greatly appreciated Rhodey's presence.

"I don't know what is going on, but you know as well as I that Harry is a tough kid. He will pull through whatever mess this jerkward did," he continued speaking softly, reassuringly, as he started to massage Tony's scalp and the nape of his neck. "You're doing everything right."

Relaxing even more from Rhodey's touch, Tony felt himself fading into a restless sleep that lasted for who knew how long, really. All he knew when he woke up groggy and with a pounding headache that Rhodes was standing at the doorway speaking to someone.

"Sir," JARVIS said softly to not startle Tony. "Dr. Hale has arrived and is stepping out of the lift as we speak."

Slowly getting up, the room tilted some and it took him a moment to steady himself before moving to be next to Rhodes. He saw Happy standing nearby holding a bag of what Tony could only assume was food, which he gladly accepted, uncaring that he probably looked like a complete mess. Thor was standing beside Happy, arguing with someone he didn't care to register who right now. The elevator pinged and out stepped Jason. He flagged the doctor in, seeing the Avengers and agents start to swarm from the common space down the hall after noticing him. Tony gave another quick pat on Thor's shoulder as he resumed his guard on the room.

"Good on keeping the dogs at bay."

Thor only grumbled an inaudible response, still peeved with him about the leaving thing most likely.

Of course, Tony knew it was more for Loki than for himself as to why Thor was being protective. The god made it clear that his brother would be facing his punishment back at their home world and would do anything to keep him out of the hands of SHIELD in order to do this. It was also unfortunate there wasn't much time for Tony to get the scepter or the tesseract secured in his possession, so both of them were now under SHIELD jurisdiction unless Thor had a plan to get the cosmic weapons back as well. At the moment it was a low priority for him, he had a child to take care of.

"I'll grab you some water. Lord knows you need it," Rhodes said, patting Tony reassuringly on the shoulder. "I'll be right back. Promise."

Rhodes slipped out of the room as Jason stepped in, and Tony promptly closed the door behind him. He still didn't bother trying to cover up his grim appearance from the doctor. Blood, dirt, tears and all still caked on his face.

"You have no idea how grateful I am for you coming all the way here, Doc," Tony said, following Dr. Hale over to the bedside. "He's… he's not in good shape."

Tony didn't know how he was ever going to repay the two life saving witches—Andy and Zabi, as he so fondly started calling them—back in London. They were the ones who hand-picked Dr. Jason Hale to handle Harry's medical care. Not only was the man well versed in medicine, but he was also a wizard, so there was no need to censor anything as Tony explained what went down that put Harry in his current state and why a full-grown adult was passed out beside him.

"It is no trouble. I do apologize for being late. Magical customs of travel has a lot of red tape when it comes to traveling such a distance overseas," Dr. Hale explained.

"Some things never change, eh?" Tony attempted to joke but it falling flat.

Jason pulled his wand from an inner pocket and cast two small white orbs that hovered over Harry's chest and head. One changed to a crimson color and mimicked the slow pulse that matched the black rope on his wrist. Dr. Hale took the initiative to cast them over Loki as well for good measure. The ones that hovered over their heads turned a navy blue, having several wispy tendrils escape the otherwise tight ball of color, and they seemed to have white shocks of electricity static through them at a rapid rate.

"Their pulses are both very weak, but they are there, and strangely synchronized," Dr. Hale observed, taking a quick note down in a handbook with an ornate looking fountain pen. "Their brain activity, however, is off the charts."

"That's what I gathered as well," Tony said, swallowing hard. "He seems to be just hanging on…" he trailed off, not wanting to follow that line of thought.

"Though the scale of this brain activity is beyond a simple dream-like state. They are operating on a very complex level, as if they are both taking in a lot of information in a very short period of time. Think of it as their physical selves are here, but their mental side is on another level entirely. Where that could be is debatable."

Tony let out a heavy breath, puzzling through what this could mean. Jason continued before he had a chance to respond.

"I am sure you are more than well-versed by now on the complexities of our existence in the universe and all that it has to hold. Magic being one of those veins, whose to say alternate realities and pocket dimensions don't exist as well?"

"Pardon my suspicions, but you are talking far more than medical terms here," Tony pointed out. "You've studied science as well?"

"Medicine is my true passion, but I have taken liberty to study various sciences along the way that may or may not help my practices, yes," Dr. Hale explained, idly fixing his crisp white doctor's coat collar. "When you are nearing seventy-five and your family are coworkers and patients, you tend to have a lot of free time at the end of the work day."

Tony was impressed, giving the doctor a once over after he disclosed his age. He didn't look a day over thirty-five, maybe forty if he wanted to push it, but the faint silver strands mixed into his otherwise blond hair was hard to notice if it wasn't being looked for like Tony was doing now. It was an interesting enough detail about wixen living a long life and physically age slowly that he stowed it away for a later date.

"Your world grows ever more fascinating," Tony muttered, focusing back on Harry and the orbs hovering over him. "Do you have any guess as to when they will wake up?"

Dr. Hale checked his wristwatch, Tony didn't need to see it to know it was quite late now. "How long have they been unconscious?"

"Since this afternoon. They were brought in here and haven't been moved since. Not a twitch or anything from them."

"And this darkness you said emitted from Harry, you have read about what it could potentially be from the magical world?" Dr. Hale asked cautiously.

"Yeah, I read the rather frustratingly short excerpt of Newton's work about obscurials a thousand times now, and it gets exceedingly unhelpful each time," Tony said, scratching an itch on his scalp. "It's a parasitic entity that manifests from suppressing one's magical core, right? Do you think it is what happened?"

He really, truly hoped it wasn't the case, because the last thing he needed or wanted to stress and worry over was when Harry was going to simply drop dead from an episode. Preventing them has been relatively easy since they had settled in and left London in their wake, but the outbursts could clearly happen at any time when an unwarned trigger presented itself like it had today. Hiding from the world was not an option nor was it healthy. He wouldn't force Harry to do that again and potentially make it worse as a result.

"At first I suspected it was, but after seeing this," he gestured to the binding, "it's quite unusual behavior of an obscurus, or any magical thing, really. The only thing I could relate it to are very dangerous binding spells, but they are never visible like this, or mimicking a heartbeat."

"If it is of any help, they are not human by any stretch of the word," Tony supplied, gesturing to Loki. "I'm sure you've heard of them? Loki, Norse god of a pain in my ass?"

Dr. Hale couldn't help but chuckle slightly, turning his hazel eyes over to Tony. "And you say my world is fascinating when you have a literal god in your room?"

"Trust me, I only found out like a week ago," Tony said, only to do a half shrug as he recalled something. "Well, maybe a year if you count my hacking into government databases to dig up what they were up to and learned what happened in New Mexico, but I don't really count that because the whole 'seeing is believing' factor is worked in now."

He was rambling, which was an okay sign at least. He was still exhausted but not so much so that he was losing his grasp on reality. Unfortunately, the doctor hadn't given him any real new information aside from their complicated brain activity, which wasn't going to satisfy Thor at all when he decided to come in and see what was going on.

"You think the thing is siphoning off them to stay alive?" Tony asked, hearing his voice waver some as he did.

"It's a possibility I wouldn't rule out. For now, I would suggest getting IVs on them to keep them stable and monitor them closely for any changes," Dr. Hale said, reaching for his medical bag he brought with.

Tony moved aside to let the doctor do his thing. He watched him pull things from his bag like Mary Poppins to set up and sterilize the space as best as he could. Tony fought back tears again as he watched, growing more and more concerned about the what ifs and whys. For once in a long while, he didn't know what to do with himself, having a literal mental shutdown was not boding very well.

Jason carefully pulled open one of Harry's eyes to flash a light over them and almost pulled back. Tony could see that his eyes were still pitch black, and the Doc didn't seem too amused by it, either.

"Well, that is something…" He brushed Harry's hair back to inspect the blackened scar as well, taking several more notes in his little handbook in the process before he moved over to Loki to do the very same process.

Tony zoned out, trying to find some rationality among the mystery. The only thing that pulled him from the terrifyingly blank mind of his was Thor entering the room after who knew how much time passed and JARVIS speaking about how Fury was now on site demanding a proper explanation of what was going on. For all he cared, Fury could shove it where the sun didn't shine since there was literally no threat anymore or reason for him to even show up. He'll blame Natasha for that one. If Fury wanted to be helpful, he could take the circus back to headquarters and leave him alone, but he knew that was definitely not going to happen because he was technically harboring a murderer.

Thor surveyed the room, not seeming pleased by the lack of progress made. "Their condition has not improved. Your sorcerer is useless. I insist on taking them to Asgard."

Tony did not respond immediately, too lost in himself to decline right away. It was when Thor advanced on Harry did he snap to attention, silently sending out a signal from the wristbands to summon the gauntlets of his armor. He had both hand repulsors charged and targeted at the god in seconds, unbothered by the recent holes punctured in the wall.

"Touch him and I'll send you into next Tuesday, Thundercat," Tony warned, hyper-focused on Thor as he slowly moved to Harry's side to intercept him.

Thor let out a half-amused chuckle, gripping his hammer firmly at his side. "You're a fool, Stark. Your child is not the only one who is in danger here. Loki is my brother and needs proper intervention for whatever is going on."

"So now you're growing a heart?" Tony snapped, expression darkening. "Weren't you saying to Coulson and Fury just yesterday that he was bent on revenge against you and everything? And you told me yourself you're planning on tossing them in prison to rot. Sounds so very caring."

"Our relationship is… complicated," Thor reasoned, slacking his grip on the hammer. "But whatever is happening could be potentially dangerous, and I feel that an off-world perspective on it would be crucial."

Tony saw Thor's softening his stance, but he held his own. Rhodey came in shortly after, coffee and water in hand, he looked between the two and their stand-off before placing the drinks on an end table and approached them.

"I am guessing the news isn't favourable?" Rhodes hazard a guess.

"Thunder Pants here wants to take Harry off-planet," Tony explained, not taking his eyes off Thor. "And he doesn't understand the word 'no.'"

"And you're too blinded to see that there is no help a mortal can provide for them," Thor accused.

Rhodes put his hands up, placing them in between the two as if pushing them away. "Hey, hey! Arguing is not going to help this or them. Why not let the doctor do what he does best and we go from there? All this extra tension is going to help no one."

Tony glanced at his platypus, knowing he spoke reason on the issue at hand. Thor shifted his weight and squared his shoulders, looking over at Loki for a long moment before regarding Tony again.

"Could you lower your weapon? It is not necessary."

"Not until I know you won't try anything fishy," Tony deadpanned.

Thor sighed, laying down his hammer on the floor, he proceeded to hold up his hands. "You have my word. But I do not wish to wait this out for long. If your sorcerer does not provide answers soon, I'm afraid there will be no other choice."

Rhodes placed a hand on Tony's bicep, silently requesting him to stand down. He did so, but it didn't help stop that emptiness in the pit of his stomach again at the thought of losing Harry. But he couldn't just let Thor take him away to a foreign planet without him, either. If these episodes are indeed bordering on deadly to his kid… Well, waking up not on Earth without him sounds like a real big trigger that would certainly do him in. But did he have much of a choice if he was dealing with something beyond his and humankind's abilities to understand what was happening?

"Fine… just, give me until morning? If nothing happens by then, if neither of them wake up… you can… can take them." It took a lot of focus to not choke on the sob burning in his throat wanting to escape with every word.

Thor seemed satisfied by this, taking a silent leave to guard the door again while Tony focused back on Harry and the doctor who practically blended into the room by how quiet and silently he worked, appearing blissfully unaware of the heated exchange that had happened. That is when it occurred to him that the room was completely unguarded, and was surprised no one had come barging in. Though JARVIS could lock any door in the tower in a heartbeat, he could see through the fresh hole in the wall that Happy had taken the stand until Thor rejoined him.

"Their IVs are in, I could add a heart monitor if you'd like, but I can easily read the orbs without them. But if you want the assurance…" Jason trailed off, moving Loki's IV bag pole out of the way before moving around the bed to stand just a few feet from Tony.

He was lost in thought, and only when Rhodey brushed his hand against his waist did Tony snap back to the present. "Hmm? No, it is fine. I trust your judgement."

"Well that is reassuring," the doctor said, reaching a hand out toward the deep cut on Tony's temple. "Looks like you need some medical attention as well."

Tony instinctively pulled away from the gesture, clearing his throat. "I'm fine."

"You are severely dehydrated, Sir," JARVIS interjected, "and some supper wouldn't hurt along with rest and basic medical aid."

"Calling my bluffs, J," Tony scolded, accepting the bottled water from Rhodes. "Fine, but I can't promise to actually do everything."

He reluctantly ate with James while Jason tended to the wound on his temple. Once it was cleaned, the doctor pulled his wand and silently waved it over the cut, and Tony felt a tingling sensation. It was like the skin was pulling itself right back together again and stitching itself up. Once the odd feeling went away, he gently touched the area, only feeling the new tender skin there now.

"Just like new," Jason said, removing his gloves and disposing of them. "I'm afraid there isn't much more I can do for them right now."

"I know I am going to regret asking, but any idea when they could wake up?" Tony asked hesitantly, dropping the barely touched burrito back on the table to get to his feet. "Ballpack, at the very least?"

Jason let out a slow, collected breath, his gaze scanning over his patients. "Well, medical induced comas can last anywhere from a few hours to several weeks. Bodily trauma induced ones are hard to say… could be days, weeks… months. If it lasts longer than a week I would heavily advise transporting them to a hospital."

It was exactly what he didn't want to hear. "What about medical intervention to make them wake up?"

"I mean… it can be done," Jason said, swallowing involuntarily. "But not now. I am not sure how a god's body works, but for Harry, his heart rate is far too slow to even attempt something like that."

"But it is an option?" Tony pressed, grasping at straws now.

Jason only nodded a response, moving slowly toward the door while Tony escorted him. "If I may excuse myself for the time being, I have calls to make. I will return to check on them soon."

With that, Dr. Hale left the room, leaving Tony with Rhodey alone in what was slowly starting to feel like a prison.
