(So to get started, I debated on who I wanted to my main OC's love interest and I finally narrowed it down to two. I think love triangles are dynamic and fun so.. yeah.)
Vera Barton, Age 27, 5'4, copper hair, faired skin with freckles, green eyes, younger sister of Clint Barton, can control electricity with many uses and produce fire for a short while by full blasting her electricity.
A phone, it was ringing. She could hear it in the distance.. no not distance, near her actually. With a groan, Vera sat up in bed and started searching aimlessly for her phone, not even attempting to open her eyes.
"I'd like to preface this with- it better be good." She grumbled into the phone tiredly, yawning as she attempted to scratch her back.
"That depends on your definition of good." A familiar voice spoke.
"Clint?" She muttered out in confusion, wondering why he was even calling her on her normal phone instead of her burner.
"Yeah it's me. I.. I need your help. How quickly can you be out at the farm?" He asked as she sat up straighter, blinking rapidly as she started getting up, in nothing but a hoodie as she started searching for clothes in a pile of clean laundry in a hamper. Vera pulled back and checked the time on her phone. 2 in the morning.
"I can be at the farm in two hours, I'll be on my motorcycle so be on the look out for me." She told him as she quickly hung up and took her clothes to the shower then. Hurrying, she showered then pulled her long flowy copper hair into a low ponytail. She pulled on a sleeveless black turtleneck then a pair of high waisted denim jeans with a deep orange leather jacket, matching her hair in color. It was her favorite and it always got her favorable stares.
From there she made her way out of NewYork and on the road, trying to get to the farm without speeding too much. It was dark as she drove, her thoughts still trying to collect themselves, flickering between worry that something had happened to her nieces and nephews, to trying to focus on the calming music blaring in her ears while focusing on the road. Her headlight illuminated the road in a way that made her queezy, her worry flaring up her imagination.
As she drove down the road to the farm almost exactly on time, she wondered what she was to expect. As she parked her motorcycle and turned towards the house, Clint came out and was quickly out on the porch greeting her as she started up the steps.
"Always on time." He gave her a worn out smile as she gave him a similar smile, both for two very different reasons.
"It bothers me if I'm not somewhere at a specified time." She explained as Clint chuckled, pulling her in for a brief hug before letting go, crickets chirping as they stopped talking, examining each other.
"You look tired V." He said after a moment of silence as they stared at each other quietly.
"I'm used to it by now." Vera muttered quietly as he gave her shoulder a sympathetic squeeze.
"Do you still have nightmares about him?" He asked as she looked away with a sigh.
"Not a day goes by that I don't." Her voice broke off for a moment as she gathered her composure. "His family still blames me, harasses me sometimes too." Vera muttered to him as he shook his head.
"I'm sorry, they were always prickly people." Clint sighed sincerely.
"It's alright, I'm used to it by now.." Vera trailed off. "Why did you call me out here though, Clint? What's going on?" She asked in concern, trying to decipher something from his face.
"Maybe you should come inside." He lowly spoke as he guided her by her shoulder inside. There in the dining room sat.. all of the avengers. Vera blinked slowly as she slightly panicked, about to turn when Clint grabbed her by both of her shoulders and turned her towards them. "Everyone, this is my little sister Vera, Vera these are the avengers but you already know Nat and Fury."
"So not only a secret family but a secret sister too?" Vera recognized the man who spoke as Tony Stark, it was easy to do so with goatee and the sarcasm dripping from his tone.
Vera waved awkwardly then glanced to Clint. "I don't understand why you brought me here." She told him as Tony got up and examined her.
"I don't either, Legolas. Am I missing something?" He asked as he looked her over, trying to find something.
"Ms. Barton here could be very useful in taking down Ultron." Fury told them as he walked over to her and pulled her into a hug. Vera returned the hug whole heartedly while her rubbed her back. "I've missed you V, you've been awful quiet off the grid since you left Shield." He told her as she shrugged.
"I like quiet.. And I'm glad I was too, I heard the news about what happened with the Shield down fall." Vera responded as Fury went and sat down and Nat walked up and grabbed her hand, pulling her into the seat besides her.
"How could she help us take down Ultron?" Steve asked as his eyes seemed to physically try to take her apart and learn her secrets.
"Who's Ultron?" Vera asked in confusion with a raised eyebrow.
"You haven't heard?" Bruce asked as she shook her head.
"Look if I hadn't had first hand experience with the battle of NewYork back in 2012, I doubt I'd even know what was going on then." She told them as Tony crinkled his eyebrows at her.
"Vera lives her life very.. quietly as she put it." Clint told them.
"Like how quietly?" Tony asked and Vera answered.
"I don't have TV, internet, I have my phone but all I really do is call people, occasionally watch YouTube how to's, and the only real people I even talk to are drunk people at the bar." She told him as he balked at her.
"Man birdbrains, your family sure does produce weird ones." Tony smirked as Clint chuckled.
"As much as I'd like to learn more about you ma'am, I would really like to know how you could help us with our problem." Steve spoke politely if not a bit forcefully. Tony nodded his head in agreement.
"To make this a simple version of events, I accidentally created a sentient robot who's going on a homicidal rampage and wants to destroy the world." Tony explained as Vera winced.
"Man that's bad.. that's the start of terminator bad." She muttered as Tony winced himself.
"Thanks.. now I feel worse about this then I thought I could." He grumbled sarcastically as Vera stifled a laugh.
"Sorry, sorry.. you just don't get to hear about stuff like this too often." Vera told him with a ghost of a smile before getting serious. "I take it that Fury means my abilities." Vera said as Bruce, Steve, and Tony all did double-take.
"Abilities? You have abilities?" Bruce asked cautiously as Vera eyed him somewhat nervously, nodding. "How did you get these abilities? We're your experimented on? Did you experiment on yourself?" Bruce started on as Fury lifted his hand to stop him.
"Dr. banner, I understand why you of all people would be.. inquisitive especially with what happened with the two enhanced and yourself, but she hasn't been experimented on." Fury said as Steve swiveled his head to look at Fury with raised eyebrows.
"So how did she get these powers?" Steve asked, his tone less polite and more suspicious now. Vera glanced at Nat nervously as Nat leaned to whisper to her.
"You're alright, no one here has any prejudice against them." She told her comfortingly as Vera slowly nodded.
"I'm.. a mutant." Vera reluctantly answered as Tony turned towards her in surprise.
"I've never met any mutants in real life except for-" she interrupted him already knowing the answer.
"Charles Xavier, right?" She answered for him. He nodded her head as she chuckled. "Yeah, he's the face for mutants. You probably know why we like to keep to ourself Mr. Stark, especially with all the prejudices." She told him.
"What are mutants?" Steve asked, looking around as Clint looked at him with bafflement.
"Who was tasked with updating you on world events? Because whoever they were, they did a lousy job." Steve sighed as he ran his hand through his hair.
"An answer would suffice." Steve muttered as Fury answered him.
"Mutants are humans who developed super human abilities at puberty or at a very traumatic and or stressful time in life." Fury explained. "You've probably gone without hearing too much coverage about mutants for a few reasons, one of them being that after things started getting weird with Thor coming to earth, Tony developing Iron Man and Cap resurfacing, talk about mutants died down a lot." Steve nodded as he gazed at Vera, his curiosity peaked.
"So what can you do, Ms. Barton?" He asked her as she stood up and held out her hand in the middle of the table. Steve, Bruce, and Tony all leaned in to peer at her hand closely. Suddenly little sparks of electricity started to erupt on her hand and suddenly it started to getting bigger and brighter then formed together and make a blueish red flame.
"Electricity and fire but I've always had to work up to my fire, generating enough electricity to set alight. I can draw electricity from anything, even humans but I try not to do that. Humans produce sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium, which have a specific electrical charge but you need it to live so only in rare cases have I even considered it. Along with this, I can use the electrical charge in objects to phase or 'teleport'," Vera used finger quotes when she said this as she explained. "As people would like to say from one point to another."
Tony sat listening intently as she spoke, completely enraptured with what she was saying along with Bruce while Steve was holding on by a thread trying to make sure he understood what she was saying.
"So you're telling me because of your power with electricity, you can molecularly phase with any electrical current from one place to another?" Bruce asked as she nodded enthusiastically.
"Yes! I'm glad you understand Dr. Banner, most people have a little hang up with that part. But as you can probably guess, it's limited to only where electricity runs, I can't do things with cellphone towers or any radio signal or waves. Things like electrical powered trains are useful from going one place to another, electrical wire in houses, buildings, Etc, are incredibly handy when trying to do something stealthy."
"So the fire, how does that work?" Tony asked as Vera shifted her attention to him.
"Well if I use enough electricity I can spark a flame so as you could probably guess, if I up the electricity then I can produce fire. The more energy I draw, the stronger my abilities. I produce electricity on its own but I have my limits, it's draining to produce electricity without a source to draw from but- I don't need to have direct contact with an electrical source to draw from it, only close enough. Some things are different then others and it's always better to touch an object but I'll never run out of energy as long as I'm somewhat close to an energy source. Cars, houses, phones, even humans."
Tony, Bruce, and Steve sat in awe at Vera's explanation while Fury and Natasha smirked at each other. "Well kid, I guess your apart of the team." Tony finally said and Vera shook her head then, her face scrunched up.
"No, no, I.. I don't wanna be a part of the team. I'm here because Clint asked me to help, I'm sorry." Vera shook her head as she rubbed her neck nervously. Fury glanced at her with a look and Vera squinted her eyes at him, both of them having a silent conversation.
"Can I ask why?" Steve asked, his voice genuinely curious. Vera sighed and was about to talk when Natasha spoke for her.
"Vera will try to chalk it up to not being experienced enough to be an avenger or brave enough to be a hero but she's actually just afraid of being in a team with people." Vera looked away with a glare.
"What's wrong with being in a team?" Steve asked her with his brows furrowed as if she had offended him somehow.
"Attachment." Vera simply told him as Clint squeezed her shoulder, silently supporting her as he sat next to her. She gave him a small smile then redirected the conversation. "So what's this Ultron's game plan?" She asked.
"Ultron took you guys of out of play to buy himself time." Fury explained as he looked around. "My contacts all say he's building something. With all the vibranium he took off with, I don't think it's just one thing." Fury said as he got up to pour himself a glass of lemonade.
"So is that why you all look so rough?" Vera asked as they all glanced to her with identical looks of deadpan. Steve got up then and leaned on the entry way to the kitchen as he looked at Fury.
"What about Ultron himself?" Steve asked Fury as he glanced to him. Tony listened intently as he got up and started fussing with some beads hanging up near the entrance of the house.
"Oh he's easy to track, he's everywhere. Guy is multiplying faster then a catholic rabbit." Vera snorted at that as he smirked then continued. "Still doesn't help us get an angle on any of his plans though." Tony moved and grabbed some darts and started chucking them at a dart board hanging up.
"Is he still going after launch codes?" Tony asked as Vera's eyebrows raised up in surprise.
"He's going after launch codes?" Vera asked in concern, rubbing her neck.
"Yes, he is." Fury responded. "But he's not making any head way." Fury told them, his voice tinged in thought as Tony looked to Fury in surprise.
"I cracked the pentagons firewall in high school on a dare." Tony said to him incredulously as Vera rolled her eyes.
"Well I contacted our friends at the NEXAS about that." Fury said as Steve interrupted him.
"NEXAS?" He asked as Bruce filled him in.
"It's the world's internet hub in Oslo's. Every bite of data flows through there." He explained as Clint directed his attention back to Fury.
"So what'd they say?" He asked him pressingly.
"The codes are constantly being changed." Fury said to them.
"By who?" Tony asked just as Clint threw a dart dead in the middle of the board next to Tony's face. Tony yanked his head back and then gave Clint an annoyed look as Clint shrugged with a shit eating grin.
"Party's unknown." Fury responded dryly as Nat asked,
"We have an ally?"
"Ultrons got an enemy, that's not the same thing. Still I'd pay folding money to know who it is." Fury emphasized as Vera nodded her head in agreement.
"I'm sure Ultron's already ruffled some feathers so he's bound to have quite a few of those." Vera commented as Tony walked over.
"I might have to visit Oslo, find our unknown." Tony murmured.
"Well," Natasha chimed in. "This has been good times boss but I was kind of hoping when I saw you, you'd have more then that." She said just as Fury leaned back on the counter, taking a sip of his drink before he responded.
"Well I do." He told her cheerfully. "I have you." Vera smirked at this. "Back in the day I had eyes and ears everywhere, you kids had all the tech you could dream of. Now here we all are, back on earth with nothing but our wit and our will to save the world. Ultron says the avengers are the only thing between him and his mission." Fury looked around at all of them as they all watched him. "And wether or not he admits it, his mission is global destruction."
It felt like everything got ten times more intense when Vera heard that, everyone face darkening at the mere mention of it. Fury spoke again as everyone looked at one another. "All this, laid in a grave." He motioned around the house as Vera's stomach dropped. "So stand, outwit the platinum bastard." He told them fiercely. Vera smiled softly at this. Fury was always good with motivational speeches.
"Steve doesn't like that kind of talk." Natasha said mockingly with a small smile as Steve sighed with a grin and a shake of his head.
"You know what Romanoff.." He trailed off as Fury asked,
"So what does he want?" The question was left hanging in the air for a moment as everyone thought.
"To become better." Steve finally said after a moment of thought. "Better then us." He looked around at them. "He keeps building bodies." It was like a lightbulb had gone off in Tony's head as he quickly added.
"Person bodies. The human form isn't efficient. Biologically speaking we're outdated, but he keeps coming back to it." Tony sounded puzzled by this.
"When you two programmed him to protect the human race, you amazingly failed." Natasha grimaced at them with a tilt of her head.
"They don't need to be protected." Bruce muttered as he stared at a picture of a butterfly on the table. "They need to evolve." Everyone looked to Bruce then. "Ultron's going to evolve." He told them as Vera tilted her head at him in confusion.
"Evolve how?" She asked as it seemed like Tony and Bruce thought about something at the same time.
"Has anyone been in contact with Helen Cho?" Bruce asked as he looked around. Vera was lost then, not knowing who they were talking about.
"Who's Helen Cho?" Vera wondered out loud.
