NEON GENESIS EVANGELION: TELEPHONE BOOTH MEETING
PROLOGUE: DESTINY AWAITS
Before we begin this journey, I want to say that Neon Genesis Evangelion: Telephone Booth Meeting will take place in an alternate universe. I'm taking some scene inspiration and personality traits from the Anime and the Manga. The character's backstories and traits will be different and so will the storylines. This is the first big story I've written, so if you enjoy it, then be prepared because I like improving on my work. So, sit back, relax, enjoy the story, and... let's get started.
Disclaimer: Evangelion doesn't belong to me.
SHINJI IKARI
Shinji Ikari never had cherished dreams or ambitions. He doesn't aspire to any future profession or career. So far, in the first fourteen years in his life, things have happened as they had to. And things will probably continue the same way. That's why he never cared whether he got into an accident or something and died.
He wrote all that in an essay for school. He got a bad grade and a note that said Meet me after class, Ikari. He was handed that paper by the principal before he left school. Shinji growls at what that teacher would want from him.
As Shinji walks through the hallway, he sees some boys looking at him, muttering some stuff. Shinji ignores bullies and keeps them from provoking him. Even when bullies go violent on him, he doesn't fight back. He only uses his words to scare them away, words that say that he doesn't care what they do to him and most of the time, it worked.
But when they actually provoke him, he goes violent. Every fight ends with him getting a suspension for misbehavior. While Those assholes didn't get a single punishment. They got off scot-free! It's bullshit!
The girls for some reason, really like him. Some try to ask him out but he always turns them all down. He doesn't have time for romance and sex.
When Shinji got to the Literature room, the teacher was waiting for him. Shinji hates most of his teachers, especially this one. They're all disingenuous. They always act so big just to make themselves look good.
As usual, the teacher yelled at him and told him to take the assignment more seriously. Shinji responded that he did what the teacher told him to do earlier, nothing more, nothing less. The teacher got angry. Shinji didn't have time for a man child throwing a temper tantrum. So, he leaves the room.
He walks through the hallway, on his way out of the school building. He has lived in New Atsugi for ten years of his life and he's hated a whole lot of it. The people are assholes. Baseless rumors spread fast. The place doesn't even look nice.
It was a long walk home. When Shinji got inside, no one else was home. His Uncle Yoshiyuki and Aunt Minako were still at work. His younger cousin Taiga was still in school because she's in Grade School in the fifth grade.
He doesn't know how he feels about his relatives. His Uncle and Aunt pay more attention to their daughter but that's okay. Taiga is very sweet and Shinji doesn't have a problem with that, anyway. At least those two do care about him.
Taiga is the only friend Shinji has ever had. For his tenth birthday, the seven year old girl gave him a MP3 Player to replace that old S-DAT Player that he threw over a bridge. In return he gave her a Nintendo DS, like the one he has.
Overall, Shinji loves his family but it's not enough to get him caring about what happens to him.
Shinji immediately begins the usual chores. He cleans the whole place, does the dishes, cooks dinner, and takes the trash out. Shinji has no problem doing the chores. He's been doing them since he was seven when he was told to do them.
It wasn't a problem really, it actually gives him something to do instead of playing video games or listening to that MP3 player.
Once Shinji gets dinner prepared, he decides to check the mail. All the time, all of them were only for Uncle Yoshiyuki and Aunt Minako. As he puts letters on their side of the table, Shinji discovers a letter not addressed to Yoshiyuki or Minako but addressed to him. He opens it up and he sees his name in kanji and alphabetical, a bar code...
…and a note.
COME - GENDO IKARI
That was what the note said. Shinji felt many emotions. Confusion, sorrow, disappointment, pain, and rage. He screams as loud as he can. He takes a pen and scribbles over the words and tears the paper apart.
He didn't care about what else was in the mail. He didn't even care about the other mail. He stomped up stairs, slammed his room's door, and cried.
ASUKA LANGLEY SOHRYU
Asuka Langley Sohryu has only one goal in her life. That goal is to grow up and mature faster than others. She made a promise to never to cry, saying it's what children do because of what happened ten years ago. Since then, all she needed to do is think for herself. She still does to avoid getting hurt.
She's been working real hard on trying to prove that she's an adult. She was able to get out of custody from her father. The bastard deserved it. For what he did to Mama was unacceptable, cheating on her while she was still sick. He's lost the right to be called Dad or Father. She calls him by name, Wilhelm Langley.
Asuka graduated college recently and she kind of got nothing out of it. She doesn't even remember what degree she got. Does she need to go, again or is college just a big stupid waste of time? It doesn't matter. She only needed to graduate college to also prove she's an adult.
Both Wilhelm and college have made Asuka's disgust towards men and boys. Wilhelm uses women for his own personal gain and college is just filled with perverts.
Asuka has done a lot to prove that she's an adult in her mind at least. One more thing to prove that she is an adult is to find a man. A man who isn't a pervert. A man who doesn't use women for personal gain. That's the kind of man she's looking for. She thinks she has an idea who that man is.
Ryoji Kaji became Asuka's guardian, when he helped her be freed from Wilhelm's custody. He was always very friendly to Asuka unlike everyone else. He's extremely handsome as well. This made her develop some sort of crush on him. But he doesn't show any romantic interests in her which makes the girl frustrated.
Asuka's is currently at the door to Kaji's office where he usually works in the early morning most days. When he's not working, he's sometimes away from Germany for some business trip or he's actually spending time with her.
Right now, she's really bored. She needs someone to kill the boredom. She opens the door to the office with a cute face that seems forced. She only finds that he's not in the room. The computer is still on. Kaji must have just left a few minutes ago.
She can't help but to look at what's on the computer. There are two tabs on the screen. The one on the left is three sync data reports... WAIT, three?! There were... two. Has the Third Child been chosen yet? Then why is this extra one blank? No name. No face. Nothing!
But there is also information on her on the other tab, there's a report about Asuka and Evangelion Unit-02 being transferred to Japan early. There has always been an anticipation for Unit-02 to be in Japan for the upcoming monster attacks.
She's been desiring to get off this country and have a fresh start from her boring life. It's why she has learned to speak the Japanese language and is learning to read the Kanji.
Both of them will be transferred separately. She frowns at separately, she doesn't like being separated from Unit-02. The Evangelion is her biggest pride. It's the thing that gives her attention from others. She'll have a hard time going without Unit-02 for a couple days. She sighs slowly. What's next won't be any better actually.
SECOND CHILD DEPARTING: 7:49:12
It's a countdown. There's only eight hours left. Asuka is shocked. She's leaving in a couple of hours. Kaji must have a lot of explaining to do. She hears familiar footsteps. Speaking of which. Kaji entered the room, surprised to see Asuka at his computer.
Asuka turns to Kaji, puts a hand on her hip, taps her foot, and puts a very big frown on her face.
SHINJI IKARI
Shinji hasn't stopped crying. Even when he hears the door opening and closing and three voices that each say "I'm home!", he hasn't stopped crying. He hasn't gotten up and out of his room to greet his relatives. He was too upset to do anything until he heard a knock on his door.
"Shinji?" Taiga asked with concern. She was always super nice to Shinji and she was the only person he ever talked to. She was always so innocent. "Are you okay?"
"NO!" Shinji cried out. He doesn't want to talk to anyone. He just wants to be alone. Taiga went downstairs. It was quiet for a couple of seconds until a pair of two harder footsteps came upstairs. Another knock. It was Aunt Minako. "Shinji, is something wrong?" Shinji doesn't respond.
Another knock. "Shinji, we're coming in." Uncle Yoshiyuki said with a forceful voice. The door opened and Yoshiyuki walked in with Minako and Taiga behind him.
Yoshiyuki sees the position and mood Shinji is in. He kneels down in front of Shinji and asks. "Are you okay? We heard from the neighbors about you screaming very loudly. What's wrong?"
"Nothing's wrong!" Shinji's voice was weak.
Yoshiyuki looks up at Minako. Then Minako brings up a taped up paper. "We found this all over the floor with the unorganized mail. This is why we're upset, isn't it?" She asked.
Shinji looks up at the paper Minako is holding. He then turns away. "It's just not fair! He abandoned me at that train station ten years ago. No letters, no messages, no phone calls and then... when he finally sends me a letter he says just... Come. Come! COME! COME!" Shinji's voice gets louder with each Come.
Yoshiyuki hugs him causing the boy to just break down crying again. Minako and Taiga soon join their hug.
After a couple of minutes Shinji finally stopped crying. It was silent for a while. Yoshiyuki decided to break the silence. "Are you okay?"
Shinji nodded very slowly. Everyone let go of Shinji. Yoshiyuki helped him up and sat him down on his bed.
"You should go see your father, he has to have sent that for a reason." Yoshiyuki said quietly.
"Why would I see that man?" Shinji's voice cracked. "He only sent that letter because he has a use for me."
"Shinji, you can't keep running away, you know it's not going to be a happy reunion, you know you're not going to like why he sent for you but..." Yoshiyuki couldn't bring out the other words.
Minako finishes for him. "You just have to take the first step, maybe something good can come out from going there, you never truly know for sure."
Shinji is silent. This is a lot to take in. He finally gives out an answer. "I guess... I guess I'll go see what my father wants from me."
Both Yoshiyuki and Minako smiled.
Minako got up and went to his cloth drawer. "We'll pack some clothes for you. We'll send the others for the moving truck." They opened up the drawers and picked out some clothes. Minako turned to her husband. "Honey, can you get out the bag."
Yoshiyuki nodded and left for the hallway closet.
Shinji looked down. He doesn't know why he said yes. He's already having a hard time with his decision.
Shinji then realized that Taiga was standing in front of Shinji, looking at his face. "I'll pack your video games and music player." Taiga said meekly.
Shinji smiled. "Thank you." He whispers as pats Taiga on the head.
Taiga smiles and laughs then she leaves the room.
Shinji as his smile fades, looks up at the ceiling and then says. "Let's see what you want from me..." His whisper turns to a growl. "Father."
ASUKA LANGLEY SOHRYU
Asuka is being escorted to her headquarters by Kaji. When Kaji found her in his office, he told her It's time to pack up, there's not much time.
Once she went inside her quarters with a red bag she began to pack up some of her favorite dresses and comfy clothes while getting dressed in her yellow sundress. She also packed her other personal belongings as well.
Once Asuka got dressed and had the stuff that she would like to take with her packed, she grabbed her bag and walked out the door to see Kaji waiting for her. Kaji went from a bored look to an optimistic look when he saw Asuka. "I take that you're ready to go?"
Asuka nodded. She then frowned. "Kaji, when did you get this message?"
Kaji sighs. He's in frustration. "A few seconds before I left. I went to the leader of this Branch of NERV to confirm if the message was right. I didn't want to believe it myself. This is a very early time for this." He sighs again. "Sub-Commander Fuyutsuki ordered the Second Child in Japan immediately. Sorry I'm just as frustrated as you are."
Asuka feels better that Kaji agrees with her. "Well, we don't have time. There's a chopper waiting for us." She begins to walk down the hallway.
"Asuka." Kaji's voice made Asuka stop. "I'm not coming with you for this trip."
"WHAT?!" Asuka's yell was so loud that Kaji covered his ears. "Why!" She was less loud.
Kaji sighs sadly. "I still have work to do here." Kaji smiled brightly. "Don't worry, I'll soon be in Japan and we'll see each other again soon. I'll send your other stuff to Japan right after you leave."
"But still, I won't get to see you anymore." Asuka whined.
Kaji huffed. "Asuka, there will be plenty of boys in Japan that will be begging to be your boyfriend."
Asuka growls at that. "I'm not interested in kids. I want a man." She hugs Kaji tightly. "You're the only person I love, after you rescued me from my father!"
"Asuka, let go!" Kaji requested.
Asuka ignores his request. "You defended me against him. That must mean that you love me! You pay a lot of attention to me. I always try to show you..."
Asuka stopped when she was pushed back by Kaji. She looks at Kaji who has a very serious look on his face. "Asuka, you want to be recognized as an adult right?" Asuka nods. "Then I'm going to tell you this so listen carefully."
Kaji sighs and begins. "You're still a kid. No matter how hard you try to show otherwise, you're still just a thirteen year old girl. Teenagers aren't my type, they haven't been since I was no longer one myself. You need someone else, someone that's your age. You may be mature at times but you still have very childish moments more often."
Asuka was taken aback by this. "B-b-but why don't you..."
Kaji cut her off again. He's a lot calmer. "Look, I'm already in love with someone else and I won't tell you who because I still haven't gotten over that break-up years ago. Now, listen to me. If you can act mature for your age, you can find someone that's also the same. You got that?"
Asuka hesitated. This was a lot to take in. Not only Kaji rejected her again but he's already in love with someone that's not her. She couldn't believe this. Why didn't he say anything about that?
Then Asuka thinks about the other things Kaji has said. He does have a point about that part. So, she sighs, accepting the fact that Kaji might not be the one for her. "Alright, I guess you're right."
Kaji blinked. "You thought, I haven't known about your cute little crush on me?"
Asuka scowls at the word crush. "I tried getting your attention a lot of times. I tried to show you that I'm an adult. But you always reject me like I'm not good enough."
Kaji sighs in disappointment. "Every time I turn you down, it's with kindness. Besides I never looked at you as a romantic partner, more like a pupil or a daughter I never got."
Kaji walks towards Asuka and puts a hand on her shoulder. Asuka looks at the hand then at Kaji. "Asuka, sometimes there's a point where you realize that you can't get what you want. So you're going to have to accept it. That's a part of growing up."
Asuka nods. "Bye, Kaji." She places a kiss on the cheek. "So, you're okay with that?"
Kaji laughs. "The lips are for someone else."
Asuka giggled and then started walking away.
Then Kaji calls out to her. "Hey, Asuka?!" Asuka turns to look at Kaji. "Remember this, I am and will always be your friend."
Asuka smiled at this. She may not have Kaji's love but she does have Kaji's friendship. She begins to walk away again. She's on her way to the V-TOL that's transporting her all the way over to Japan. As she looked at the hallway, she said to herself. "Well, let's see what'll happen." She begins to grin and giggle. "Who knows."
SHINJI IKARI
At the train station, Shinji has arrived, accompanied by Yoshiyuki, Minako, and Taiga who are here to wave him goodbye.
Minako had the kind of smile that says that she's worried. "Be careful, okay."
Yoshiyuki laughed with a goofy smile on his face. "We certainly hope the best of luck for you."
"Bye Shinji!" Taiga waved excitingly. She then runs up to Shinji offers his Gameboy Advance and his Nintendo DS. "You forgot about these. I didn't want you to get bored."
Shinji takes the video game systems and pat his cousin on the head. The kid runs back to Yoshiyuki and Minako. Shinji looked at his relatives one last time. "Bye. Uncle. Auntie, and Tai." He puts a backpack on his back, picks up his bag, turns around and walks to the station entrance.
He made his way to the waiting area near the tracks. He then hears a voice on the loudspeaker. "The Express Linear Train that's bound for Tokyo-3 is arriving. For your safety please step away from the area inside the yellow lines."
Shinji walked towards the lines, standing behind them. He sees that a train is arriving.
The train stops beside Shinji. The door opens. "The train is arriving for special government use only and departs at 1:00 PM for Tokyo-3. No civilians are allowed inside the fence. Please be aware that the boarding of this train by unauthorized people is strictly prohibited."
Shinji walks through the doors and sits on the passenger seat. He slightly rests his head. He looks around him and sees that the train is pretty empty. Like, he is the only person in this cargo. It's fine actually, he prefers to be alone anyway.
An annoying bell rings for a few seconds. The doors close and the train begins to move slowly before it begins to build up some speed. Shinji rans to the window on the other side and looks through to see his Uncle, Aunt and Cousin waving at the train. He slightly waves his hand and then steps backward.
He stands at the middle looking at the end of the aisle. The feeling he is feeling right now is confusion. His father asked him back for some reason and he's coming to see him. There's got to be a reason why he agreed to this. What happens next might give him an answer.
Destiny is Awaiting.
ASUKA LANGLEY SOHRYU
It was a long trip from Germany to Japan. It felt like forever for the first few minutes. It was so boring that Asuka slept for most of the trip. When she woke up, the jet was a lot closer to the ground. This must be Japan. The V-TOL jets land on a helicopter port on a tall building.
Once Asuka with her bag full of her belongings gets out of the jet, two men in black accompany her to the bottom of the building. Once she gets out the front door, the men in black stop go to a black car. They both get in the car but they lock Asuka out. One of them rolled down their windows. Asuka is confused. "Hey where are you two going?"
The men in black start up the engine and look at the girl.
"We trust that you will get to the destination on your own." One of them said.
"We have other business to attend to." The other said.
"Wait a minute! You..." The car drives off, leaving Asuka all by herself. She won't be able to get back in that building that she was escorted out of because they won't believe her story since she doesn't look like a NERV employee.
Asuka is frustrated by those men's carelessness of their job. They were supposed to be protecting her!
"Great... just great... how the hell am I supposed to get to NERV Headquarters!" Asuka growled. "Those two were my only guide and they just leave me behind because they have other business to attend to, that's a very stupid reason to leave someone that's important to the fate of humanity behind!"
Alarms begin to scream loudly. Asuka didn't have time to complain anymore.
She hears a voice on the loudspeaker. "As of 12:30 PM today, a special state of emergency has been declared for the Kanto and Chubu regions surrounding the Tokai district. All residents must evacuate to their designated shelters immediately. Repeating: As of 12:30 PM today, a special state of emergency has been declared for the Kanto and Chubu regions surrounding the Tokai district. All residents must evacuate to their designated shelters immediately."
An emergency? Asuka is alarmed and immediately begins to run. She looks around to see that this city looks really empty, already. The warnings don't matter to her. She needs to get to Tokyo-3. But she doesn't know which direction to take. There's no one around to give her directions. She's not very good at reading Kanji and English.
Asuka then stops in the middle of the very quiet street. She now feels lost. 24 hours ago, she was just hanging around Germany, nothing big was happening but now, she's now in a foreign country that she's very unfamiliar with. Right, now she needs directions because there's an emergency.
She turns around and unexpectedly sees a figure. It looks like a boy. He's not very far enough that she can't get a good look at him. The boy looked like he was wearing a white button up shirt and dark pants. What's important to Asuka is maybe that boy could give her directions to Tokyo-3. She begins running to him.
Destiny is Awaiting.
TO BE CONTINUED...
Some notes from the author...
Alright the story has only begun. Like I said this will take place in an alternate universe from Neon Genesis Evangelion with elements from both the Anime and the Manga. I'm not including any original Rebuild character(except for Sakura because she was mentioned in the original show) because I haven't seen Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0 Thrice Upon a Time. I have to watch it, form my opinion on it, and see what good elements to use. Once I see that movie I can fully use Rebuild elements but for now I will only use Neon Genesis Evangelion elements.
I would like to put out the name inspirations for Shinji's Uncle Yoshiyuki Ikari, Aunt Minako Ikari, and Cousin Taiga Ikari. Yoshiyuki was named after the Evangelion character designer and manga writer, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto. I'm probably going to name other characters after other Evangelion staff. Minako was named after the Sailor Moon character Minako Aino/Sailor Venus. I'd like to name a character after one Sailor Moon character because of the connections Evangelion has with the show like the name Rei being named after Rei Hino/Sailor Mars; also Misato and Usagi having the same voice actress. Taiga was named after Taiga Aisaka from Toradora, I really enjoy that show and I decided to make a reference by naming one character after a Toradora character. Also Wilhelm Langley is Asuka's father's name in this story. The name Wilhelm reminds me of the German Emperor, Wilhelm. I'm kind of a World War buff so that's why I chose the name.
This is a remastered version of the Prologue. I have plans to remaster the next three. The reason I decided to remaster these chapters is because some of them feel rushed. There are a LOT of changes. I decided to go back and add some new things while getting rid of some as well. In my opinion, this new version is better than the old version.
I will come back and change some stuff in Chapters to fix some grammar or story errors.
Please review. I am more than happy to hear some criticism from other people. I like improving my work.
