Amelia sat at an unfamiliar kitchen table, in a house that she didn't know, in a country that didn't belong to her. For the thousandth time in her life, she felt like an outcast. A serious case of imposter syndrome that has followed her for 30 years started creeping up her neck. She shifted uncomfortably in her seat and cleared her throat quietly. Her hands began to sweat. Her cousin nudged her shoulder. Amelia looked at her and she was given a reassuring smile.
"Just breathe, Harry runs this troop now, hes really great. You will be fine. Just let me do the talking." Tonks said lowly. She squeezed Amelia's hand and pulled it away, making a teasing face and wipping it dramatically on Amelia's shirt sleeve. Amelia chuckled nervously and shrugged apologetically. Needless to say she was anxious as the small group waited for their leader.
Amelia was in New York minding her own business when she received an owl at her tiny apartment window. She furrowed her brows at the small brown bird tapping the glass impatiently. Quickly, she allowed the bird in and hastily untied the letter attached to it's leg. A long sigh of relief escaped her lips, 'Thank Merlin' she thought. It was from her cousin, Nymphodora Tonks, now Lupin. She knew little about the war and less about the order, but she knew enough that it wasn't safe for her kind across the pond. Amelia was a muggle born. Her cousin was the only other magical family member she had and the only person she conversed with on a weekly basis. However, lately her letters have been few and far between and Amelia had been worried.
Amelia,
I'm so sorry I haven't sent an owl for some time. It wasn't safe. I have to make this message brief. We won. Voldemort is gone, but his followers are going underground. There is a lot to unpack but now that there is no immediate threat, I wanted to offer you in as a recruitment. We lost many and could use someone like you.
Please think about it Lia, I know you have nothing else better to do.
Tonks
Amelia stared at the letter with tears in her eyes. She knew her cousin was safe. Well, safer. She realized after the short "we won" she hadn't retained any information. Rereading and then rereading again, Amelia became more and more. confused. She set the letter down and paced her tiny living room. "I've got nothing better to do?" She looked around the room. Everything was odd shaped and mismatched. Her floor was cheap and coming up in some corners, her ceiling covered in long cracks and water stains. The kitchen living room and bedroom practically all in one. Amelia thought about her dead end job and non existent social life. Yes anything was better than the completely empty life she was currently living. She grabbed a pen and paper and scribbled down a message.
I will be leaving by portkey this evening. Tell me where to meet you...
Not 24 hours after arriving in London, Amelia sat nervously, waiting for her cousin to plead her case to the group of war torn strangers.
A young man stood at the end of the table. he was tapping his wand in his hand while looking around the room. He had messy black hair and was wearing casual muggle attire. His fidgety nature put Amelia at ease. He seemed so normal, and young. Far too young to be a war hero. Clearly he was Harry Potter because everyone was watching him expectantly. Everyone except the tall red head who sat slumped in the chair to the left of him. His arms crossed and his eyes fixed on the table. To Harrys right sat two women, another red head who looked just as displeased and a woman with bushy mouse brown hair, her face gaunt and forlorn. Their eyes looked across the table at the brooding man. Harrys eyes locked on hers for a moment and Amelia tightened her lips, giving a small smile.
"Hello everyone." Harry said. "I erm..." He fidgeted with his wand more and glanced at the women to his left. "I know we haven't had any movement on finding key death eaters. We are starting to fear they are going underground and will start building again."
"Voldemorts gone, surely they wouldn't be looking to start another uprising." A thin woman with a tight scottish brogue said with a huff. "That would be absolute ludacris."
The moody redhead snorted and shook his head. Harry looked more and more nervous with each passing minute. "Tonks, I believe you have something to say?" he added quickly. "A new recruit is never a bad thing." He smiled quickly at Amelia.
"Right. Erm..." Tonks stood and motioned to her. "Well this is my cousin, Amelia Lawson. Shes from America and" Tonks glanced down at her trying to find the words to say.
'Tell them I'm a legilimens' Amelia pushed into her head.
"Shes a ligilimens!" Tonks said enthusiastically as if that were the big selling point. Everyone looked at Tonks then to her. Most sceptically, some uncaring. Amelia moved back in her seat a bit, she wanted to crawl into a ball and die.
A chair scraping against the old stone floor sounded from the other end of the kitchen. Mr grouchy snorted to himself again and said in Harrys ear loud enough so everyone could hear. "Another mind reader, this one from America. Just what we need, great job mate. Looks like you know exactly how to fix this." He smacked Harry on the back and stormed out of the room. The brown haired girl put her head in her hand while her red headed companion sat stone still.
"Shes innocuous, no one will recognize her. She could go undercover easily." Came a kind voice on the other side of her cousin. She had met him earlier in the day, he had long scars across his face and was holding a fussing baby.
"PLUS she reads minds" Tonks added quickly.
The room went quiet for a moment. She recieved another nudge from her cousin. 'Oh Merlin I hate selling myself. What am I supposed to say? Yes. I can read minds. Let's remind them for the third time.' She thought bitterly. She cleared her throat and stood.
"Hi, yes I am a legilimens but I'm also completely new to this country. I'm not well known where I'm from and I have no ties. I'm willing to help in whatever way I can. it's the least I can do." Her words spilled out of her mouth, she may have blacked out, she has no idea what she just said.
Harry regarded her for a moment before speaking. "Brilliant. Tonks can you show her where she will be staying? I would like to discuss this with the group."
