Shut Up And Dance
Spring was often a fun time in Burgess. Elsa remembered it well when she lived there all those years ago. You would often see little ducklings in the local ponds or perhaps a flutter of new birds zooming about the skies. Of course, there was another reason for why springtime was so popular for the people in the area; it was the time of the Spring Festival. It was a time to dance and to just let loose. It was always on the first Sunday of spring. This year that meant the sixth of March.
As Elsa walked through the familiar streets, she could feel her heart grow heavy with emotion and nostalgia. It had been five years since she walked down these streets. High school in the states was interesting for her. Coming from a foreign country, it was hard to adapt but she did. Her parents liked the school that they sent her to (one of the best apparently), so she and Anna went to live with her Aunt and Uncle. However, things changed when she turned eighteen. The news of her parent's deaths hit her and Anna hard – extremely hard. It was probably the hardest moment of their lives. So back to Arendelle they went. They had only come back as it was their aunt and uncle's wedding anniversary in just over a week. It just happened to overlap with the festival – something that her sister was quite pleased about. Anna did always enjoy going to them.
Elsa's eyes drifted over the townspeople setting up for the festival which was going to take place in just under a week. People were setting up stalls, attaching flags to poles, and putting up decorations wherever she went. Some people she recognised and others she didn't. Everyone got into it which was something that Elsa liked. She liked the community coming together. It was nice.
"Watch out!" came a voice above her.
Elsa managed to sidestep just in time. A box of decorations came crashing down a second later on the spot that she had previously occupied. The decorations smashed all over the ground, littering the ground with colored glass.
"Sorry!" came the same voice from above her.
"It's okay," Elsa said in a tone that masked her disproval, "just…be more careful, okay?"
"Elsa!" a loud voice that she recognised in an instant. Elsa turned around just in time to see her younger sister hurtling down the street towards her before colliding into her. "You're here! Finally!"
"Sorry," Elsa said when she finally managed to escape the death grip Anna was exerting, "the plane was delayed for hours. Something about engine issues?"
The two Winters sisters started to walk down the street taking in all that was going around. Anna pointed out a few stores that piqued Elsa's interest. Making a mental note to check them out later, the pair started to head towards their Aunt and Uncle's house. They found it in full swing of party planning. Their Aunt was on the phone yelling something to a poor person on the other end while their Uncle was trying to sort out seating charts. Other family members were racing around trying to be useful but most of them just looked lost and overwhelmed due to how much had to be done.
"Better get upstairs girls," their uncle whispered to them when they approached them, "otherwise you will be drafted. Your cousin couldn't be saved so escape while you can."
Sure enough, their cousin was busy sorting out floral arrangements with a scowl on her face. It looked like she didn't want to be there any more than they did. Laughing silently to themselves, they raced up the stairs to the bedroom they were sharing, managing to avoid their Aunt as they did.
The day of the Spring Festival was upon them before they knew it. In the past, Elsa had always enjoyed them. There had always been a feeling of warmth whenever she attended them but now… well things were different back then. Now…well things were complicated. Change wasn't always bad but it wasn't always good either.
Elsa and Anna walked into the venue which was a large open roof barn. A low-hanging crescent moon followed them as they entered and walked around, taking it all in. Many different coloured streamers were connecting the walls above them and attached to a large disco ball which gave the party a seventies feel. Elsa could just see the faint outline of a structure that was supporting the weight of the disco ball. It was so cleverly disguised, it almost felt like magic as if Hermione Granger herself cast a spell. Twinkling lanterns were scattered along lines to give extra light. It was as if they were home to fairies. Lots of familiar faces could be seen all over the floor, standing at the bar as they waited impatiently for drinks. People from school, old neighbours and…. him.
There he was; in the same scruffy shirt, he always wore to events like these (which was always ironed at the last minute by Jack's mum Caroline). Elsa's heart stopped as her entire body froze as her bright blue eyes locked with his. Time almost seemed to slow down to a halt as they stared at each other. A look of surprise came over his face as he realised who had just entered. It had been five years since she had seen him but yet she had never stopped thinking about him. Not a day had gone by without something reminding her of him and their time together.
"Elsa?" Anna's voice seemed so far away. Her eyes followed the direction of where her older sister was looking. A smirk came over her features. "Oh," she said in a smug voice, "I see now."
"Shut up," Elsa muttered as she pulled her sister over to where the drinks were. She ordered two signature drinks from the bartender who quickly dove into action. However, out of the corner of her eyes, she kept her attention on him. He was busy chatting to his best friends but she could tell he was looking right past them – at her. Her red painted nails gripped the glass she was carrying to try and steady herself but it didn't help. Her whole body shook from the shock and nerves.
"So," Anna said as she took a sip out of the straw of her drink, "want to talk about it?"
"Talk about what?" Elsa shrugged. "We dated for three years; I broke up with him as I had to go back to Arendelle as the long-distance relationship wouldn't have worked. The end."
"How about the part where you still love him and regret breaking up with him?" Anna posed at her, her eyebrows raising slightly causing redness to appear in her sister's cheeks. "What are you waiting for? Go get him! He has not stop staring at you since you walked in. Ask him to dance!"
Elsa paused to think about what Anna had said. The music had been playing some of the greatest hits of the past decade. Some of the songs were songs they had danced to before. That can't be a coincidence…could it? Maybe it was a sign that she was supposed to ask him? Maybe asking him to dance wasn't the worst idea ever? Then her mind wandered into other territories of things to do with Jack, especially what Anna was saying.
Her time with Jack meant everything to her. It broke her heart that she had to say goodbye to it. Every fibre of her being wished she could go back in time and change that. Say screw it to the obstacles that she had been facing and kept the faith in them. The only problem is that she got scared. It had gotten a little hard and she ran. That was her biggest regret in her life because Anna was right about everything – then again, when is she not? Maybe even tell him everything? She drained her drink in one go before marching over to him.
It was time for him to know.
Jack was watching Elsa in the distance talking to Anna. It didn't take a genius to figure out that they were discussing the pair of them and what had happened between the pair of them. He didn't blame Elsa for breaking up with him. She had been in an impossible situation; her parents dying and forcing her to step up as the head of the company hadn't been easy for her. It had been all too much for her but she had come through it with grace and dignity like he knew she would. However, it had come at a price; their relationship.
Not so deep down, he still loved her with everything he had and he knew she still loved him. Their relationship was something amazing but he knew it had been at the wrong time. Still, was now the right time for them?
He saw her drain her glass and march towards him. His heart was in his throat. What would he say to her? What could he say to her? There was so much he wanted to tell her but where would he begin – and that's if he should even go there.
"Elsa?" Jack's voice was low and soft.
"Come dance," she said in a commanding tone.
She took his arm and lead him onto the dance floor. Her hands found his shoulders and pulled him closer. His own hand found soft skin on the small of her back. Her backless violet dress was intoxicating and teased every inch of him. The light from the lanterns above twinkled on Elsa's diamond earrings and necklace. His breath caught in his throat as he recognised them. They had been the ones he had given to her so many years ago. She still had them and, more importantly, still worn them?
They started to move to the beat of the music. Their eyes remained locked on each other's. Her beat-up sneaks – were they the same ones he had bought her all those years ago just like how she was wearing the jewellery he got her? - moved in rhythm to his own. His eyes wandered onto his friends and then finally onto Anna. Every single one of them looked eager at what was happening.
"Oh, don't you dare look back," she said as she had noticed his eyes were wandering. "Just keep your eyes on me."
"You're holding back," he smirked at her.
"Shut up and dance with me," she said, also smirking.
This woman is my destiny, Jack thought as they danced to the music and as he spun Elsa around, she always has been. Both of them had the biggest smiles on their faces. Being here together was simply beyond perfect. Hand in hand, arm in arm. Everything about this moment was what he wanted more than anything in his life. This was the moment he had desired for so long – even if it was a short dance with her. They were in perfect sync together as they danced. Their feet matched each other's so flawlessly. The way Elsa spun into him felt so right. The moves came naturally to them. It was like they had been dancing to this song for years. Well, they didn't win the dancing portion of their school talent show for nothing – two years in a row, he should add.
"Elsa," he breathed but somehow the rest of the words got lost in his throat. However, Elsa smiled at him with a wink. She always had a habit of being able to read his mind. Another smirk crossed his lips. "You like to tease me, don't you?"
She returned his smirk with one of her own and wiggled her eyebrows at him. "You know it." She paused before finally saying what was on her mind. It seemed to take all her energy and willpower to say it but yet it felt like the easiest she had ever said. "I've always loved you, Jack Frost, always have, always will."
"I have always loved you Elsa Winters," he replied, feeling breathless, "always have, always will."
The words were something he had always wanted to say to Elsa over the past five years but he had always chickened out. What if she hadn't felt the same? But now…. now everything was coming together. Deep in her eyes, Jack could see their entire futures being laid out for them. She was his future. She always had been and always will.
"I'm sorry for everything," she managed to breathe out. "If I could change things, I would-"
"It's okay," Jack whispered to her, interrupting her mid-sentence. "I know."
Jack could sense everything in those four words – the pain and sadness that they had both felt from being apart and the desire to be drawn back together. He never once blamed her for what had happened. The situation had been impossible after all. The decision hadn't been easy for her to make and he honestly felt like there wasn't a right one to make. Perhaps it hadn't been the right time for them back then. However, now may be a different story. Maybe it was finally the right girl, the right time moment?
It was almost magnetic. They were edging closer and closer together. Then it happened. Their lips met in a kiss that was five years in the making. Suddenly it felt like the universe was aligning to make this moment perfect for them. The moment they had both waited for was finally coming true. They both broke apart with grins on their faces. Their foreheads touched as a sense of rightfulness came over the pair of them. Everything they both wanted was finally coming together.
"Let's get out of here," Jack breathed in her ear.
"Beat me to the punch," she whispered back.
Hand in hand, the pair of them slipped away from the dance before anyone realised what was going on. Although Jack could have sworn, he saw Anna smirk as they left together. It felt like they were teenagers again. The excitement rose rapidly in him. A warm tingling sensation travelled all throughout his veins into every bit of him. Even though he was desperate to get to the next part, he still wanted to savour every part of his time with Elsa. Being with her was worth everything. A cheeky grin was exchanged as they slipped into Jack's car. Man, they were really acting a lot like teenagers here but they were allowed a bit – or in this case, a lot – of fun. Jack drove the car as quickly as he could, eager to get to back to his place for the real fun to start. He could sense the same level of excitement from Elsa as well.
In a matter of seconds, they were at Jack's empty house. Exciting the car at top speed, their lips didn't stop meeting as they raced into Jack's bedroom, clothes being torn off as if they were on fire. Jack collapsed onto his bed with Elsa on top of him. The whole world stopped at that moment as the pair of them never stopped grinning at each other. In that one moment, Jack felt complete as everything seemed to right itself. The universe was finally aligning. It felt like nothing had changed; that they were picking up right where they had left off as if they hadn't been apart these last five years.
"Now what?" Jack grinned up at Elsa.
"Shut up and dance with me," Elsa grinned back before capturing his lips once again.
