She grasped his spear and thrust her own at him, aiming for a hole in his armor. He quickly maneuvered out of the way, and with a few jabs, had shoved her back. She clutched her spear, and he clutched his. They revolved around each other like yin and yang, hot and cold, water and fire. She was the first to make a move and before Ares could comprehend what was happening, she changed her spear into a bident, knocked him over, and then trapped his neck between the metal. She smirked and he struggled, but to no avail could he get free of her attacks.
She put a knee on his chest, and another in the ground. Her hands were at the middle of the bident, putting enough pressure to contain the god of war. She knew he would keep struggling, so she stared off, waiting for him to lie limp. While she wasn't looking at him he took the moment to admire her beauty. She had tumbling almond locks and knowing grey eyes. Her light dusting of freckles and full light pink lips made her irresistible. In his view, she rivaled the beauty of Aphrodite. Her heaving chest was a sight to behold, even though she had it bound. But she was a maiden, and she would never take a man or woman as a lover.
She had a sense of innocent enchantment about her. But he knew anyone who thought that would think differently when they looked into her eyes. Her eyes told a different story. They are sad from experiences but hardened with determination for the future. As of recently, he had also seen flickers of fear. She was the goddess of wisdom and war, and no one could be more suited for that position.
But, he just had to embarrass her in front of the rest of the Olympians watching the spar with mild interest. So, he talked loud enough for people to hear, but not too loud as to be too obvious.
"So Athena, I take it you're the dominating partner?" Most of the Olympians snickered at that, with the exception of Hera. She knew things other people didn't. Though most thought she was a spoiled brat, she watched everything and knew so much from simple body language. Athena was different than she was a century ago. She seemed to be more cautious, though she tried to hide it. She watched as Athena's body tensed, then took off.
Ares was surprised, to say the least. He would've thought she would fight harder or slap him or retort with a witty comment. But it just wasn't like Athena to run away from problems. She faced them head-on, which was one of the few ways they were similar. But he saw the flicker of fear in her eyes before she shielded it away, and that worried him.
