Drink You Away
Thomas took a deep breath before going into a bar down town from where he lives. Only being eighteen a few weeks this was his first time being in a bar but wasn't his first time drinking. Thomas orders himself something to drink and enjoys his time alone. Thomas didn't tell his parents where he was going and kept it that way when they called or at least tried to call him. Thomas's phone when off with a text from his dad. "Thomas please give me a call when you get a chance I love you mate," Thomas read the text. Thomas sighed as he continued to drink. "Hey!" Vic came to Thomas's table with a smile. "Hey," Thomas said with a smile. "What are you doing drinking alone?" Vic said as she sat down next to Thomas. "Just drinking is all," Thomas said. "Can I get some shots over here!" Vic asked the bartender who then nodded to her. "Great thing about Australia is the legal drinking age is eighteen," Vic said with a chuckle. "Cheers to that," Thomas said, raising his drink.
Once the shots came in Thomas and Vic took them and started to feel a buzz. "My jerk of a stepdad kicked me out for the night while my moms on a business trip," Vic explained as she took another shot. "Really? What a jerk," Thomas added taking another shot. "It's whatever though I sleep in the guest house anyways," Vic said, taking a heavy drink from her beer. "I'm just kicked out of the main house but it's cool," Vic added. "Still," Thomas said, taking a drink of his drink. "Do you ever just want to get the hell out of here?" Vic asked obviously tipsy from taking multiple shots. "When I moved I wanted to leave but now I think I'm happy here," Thomas said looking at Vic. "Right, I want to go back to New York and be with my dad," Vic said taking a drink of her beer. "I actually have to go back to LA soon to deal what my mom left me," Thomas said looking down. "What did she leave you?" Vic asked. "Her art gallery," Thomas answered taking a drink from his beer.
"Oh," Vic answered. "So your mom was an artist?" Vic asked. Thomas nodded in response. "A damn good one too," Thomas said as he and Vic went outside to the balcony of the bar. "Really do you mind if I look her up?" Vic asked. "Be my guest," Thomas answered. Vic then took her phone out and looked up Thomas's mother. "Emily Heeler, artist of the year award, your mom was pretty big," Vic said looking at Thomas. "She didn't see it that way," Thomas said looking away from Vic. "There were three things she loved in this world. Me, my dad and art," Thomas said looking out to the city. "Wish I had a mom like yours," Vic confessed. "Why do you say that?" Thomas asked. "My mom only loves one thing, money and with a dog that has so much money there no stopping her," Vic explained. "But my dad though he loves me more than anything in the world," Vic added. "Then how come you're not with him?" Thomas asked. "Courts thought it was best if I live with my mom and then she remarried and here we are as you know," Vic explained. "Oh I'm sorry," Thomas said looking at Vic. "But I'm getting out of here when I get the money to do so," Vic said with a smile. "And go back to New York?" Thomas asked.
"You guessed it Heeler," Vic said with a laugh. Suddenly some music came on. "I love this song! We have to dance!" Vic said as she dragged Thomas to the dance floor. Thomas Spilling his drink was dragged to the dance floor and had to Dance with Vic. The two danced for a bit and then started drinking some more, getting drunk for their own good. Vic and Thomas sat in the back of the bar continuing to drink. "Victoria!" Said a chocolate lab that was coming up to Thomas and Vic. "What the hell do you want?!" Vic said angrily. "Whose this?" Thomas asked, looking to Vic. "This is Kit my older stupid step brother," Vic said looking to Thomas. "You're drunk, you need to come home," Kit said, grabbing Vic's arm. "Let go of me! It's the legal age for me to drink," Vic said, taking her arm back.
"I know that! but dad wants you home and to apologize to you," Kit said trying to get Vic to leave. "He's not my dad!" Vic shouted. "You're coming home now!" Kit said, trying to pick up Vic. "Get off of me!" Vic shouted, trying to break free. "Hey! Let her go!" Thomas shouted trying to intervene. "This is none of your concern!" Kit said, pushing Thomas down. "What the hell Kit!" Vic shouted. "You haven't taken your medicine have you!" Kit shouted in anger. "I… I don't need it" Vic said on the verge of tears. "You'll only get worse if you don't take it," Kit said looking at his stepsister. "And I'll get worse if I take it! Just let me live my life!" Vic shouted in anger. "What medicine?" Thomas said, picking himself up from the floor. "You haven't told him?" Kit asked looking at his stepsister. "No… I…" Vic started to say. "Tell me what?" Thomas asked now looking at Vic. "Tell him, I'll meet you in the car," Kit said before leaving.
Vic shed some tears before looking at Thomas. "What do you need to tell me?" Thomas asked confused. "I… I was diagnosed with Lymphoma," Vic answered. Suddenly the world stopped and it was hard to breathe for Thomas. "That's a… a form of cancer," Thomas said, breathing hard. "Hey I'm going to be okay," Vic said, placing her hand on Thomas's arm. "No! No your not!" Thomas shouted with tears in his eyes. "I will be I promise," Vic said, trying to reassure Thomas. "No! You don't know that! The same thing happened to my mom and look where she is now!" Thomas said punching a wall. Thomas then started to leave. "Thomas, please don't go," Vic said in tears. "You need that medicine! If you ever want to live longer, even if it's killing you! You need it," Thomas said with tears running down his muzzle. "I know! But I'm scared!" Vic confessed. Those words haunted Thomas, he's heard them before from his mother and now hearing them from Vic a girl he respected and liked after Tori was torture for him. "I'll… I'll call you later," Thomas said as he left the bar.
Thomas sat alone at a convenient store across from the bar and watched as Vic left with her stepbrother. Thomas being drunk and out of his state of mind couldn't drive himself home. Thomas then took out his phone and called his Uncle Rad. "Uncle Rad, I need a ride home. I'm across from Elliotts pub at the store," Thomas explained. "Thanks I'll see you soon," Thomas said before hanging up the phone. Not long later Rad showed up with his truck and parked. "Hey mate are you okay?" Rad asked getting out of his truck and walking over to his nephew. "I'm…" before Thomas could finish talking he threw up. "Oh boy," Rad said as he quickly went to his nephew's aid. Rad rubbed Thomas's back while he threw. "First time?" Rad asked. "No, I started drinking when I was fifteen," Thomas confessed while throwing up some more. "What? Who bought your alcohol?" Rad asked confused. "My friends had fake ID's" Thomas confessed now finished from puking. Thomas looked at his uncle who had a concerned look on his face. "I'm sorry uncle Rad this night didn't turn out the way I wanted to," Thomas said as he stood away from his uncle. "Hey I'll get you something for your stomach I'll be back," Rad said before going into the store.
Rad then comes out with a bottle of water and a corn dog. "Hey, first rule of drinking is you must eat while doing so," Rad said, handing his nephew the corn dog and water. "Thanks," Thomas said, taking the corn dog and water. "What we're you thinking mate? Drinking all night? And for what?" Rad said getting angry. Thomas was a little surprised by Rad's behavior. "It was just a little fun and then…" Thomas trailed off. "And what?" Rad asked. "She has cancer," Thomas answered. "Who?" Rad asked as he and Thomas sit on the tail gate of the Truck. "The second girl I ever liked," Thomas said looking down at the corn. Rad then felt bad for being hard on his nephew. "I'm sorry mate," Rad said, placing his hand on his nephew's shoulder. "It's not fair!" Thomas shouted in anger. "Everyone I get close to! They either move away or is dying!" Thomas shouted in anger. "Mate it won't always be that way," Rad explained. Thomas then looked at his uncle with tears in his eyes. Thomas then cried into his uncles chest while Rad held him, he whispered. "It's okay, it's okay," Rad said holding his nephew. "I'm sorry I called you out here, aunt Frisky is probably mad," Thomas said, pulling away from his uncle. "Hey she's not mad, she's actually worried about you," Rad said with a smile.
"I just wish things were easier," Thomas said taking a bite of his corn dog. "I know mate, I wish it was also," Rad confessed. "What kind of cancer does she have?" Rad asked. Thomas sighed before answering. "Lymphoma," Thomas answered. "Oh, I'm so sorry mate," Rad said looking forward. "Uncle Rad?" Thomas said looking at his uncle. "Yes mate?" Rad asked. "What can I do now?" Thomas asked. Rad smiled and placed his hand on his nephew's shoulder. "Do I what I couldn't do with your mother, spend all the time you can with her even if it gets worse, show her that love you have for her," Rad said softly. Thomas's heart was aching but he knew his uncle was right. "Okay," Thomas said in a low tone. Rad then gave his nephew a hug before they broke it and started to head home.
