The vehicles used by the racers in this fic are borrowed from the video game 'The Crew 2' and the code names the vehicles have been given have been borrowed from the titles of songs by various artists whom we will list at the end of the story. We hope that you enjoy this story very much.
One note about the cast: the characters from "The Spirit" are from the updated run of the title which Darwyn Cooke started for DC in 2006. So, Ebony White is no longer an offensive stereotype and the characters are NOT as depicted in the 2009 Frank Miller movie. So, the Octopus' face will not be "seen" so to speak. Also, apologies for this sequel coming so long after the first story by Charles Xavier. We had been caught up with a lot of other commitments for some time. On a plane flying over the Pacific Ocean, three men sat in the cabin.
"I'm finally going home." said the dark-haired man in the grey suit.
"Oh, not just you, but the Gumball as well." said the bald, bearded man in the dark suit. "Are you sure you'd like to get it organized as soon as you arrive?"
"Absolutely." said the dark-haired man, Michael Bannon. "They'll never see it coming."
"And perhaps I shall finally defeat you this time." said the brown-haired man wearing sunglasses and a brown longcoat with an Italian accent.
"Get in line, Franco." said the bald man, the mysterious Mr. Bright. "I have someone in mind to take on Mr. Bannon in the Gumball. Someone who I fought hard to get into my Race and did not disappoint."
"Will we be racing with Transformers again?" asked Franco.
"No, not this time." said Michael. "After the last Gumball, Optimus Prime and Megatron remembered they hated each other and went back to fighting. No, we're going to be racing with normal cars, more or less."
"And you still think you can take me on as well as Mr. Bright's entrant." said Franco.
"Yes, and I have good reason for that." said Michael. "While I was going over the plans, I ran into a guy who's made quite a name for himself in the underground racing scene. When I mentioned the Gumball, we got to talking more and we agreed he would become my new partner for the race."
"Are you gonna call your partner?" asked Mr. Bright.
"Might as well." said Michael. He picked up the phone and dialed.
In Los Angeles, a Caucasian blonde-haired man named Brian O'Conner was at his house reading a "Car And Driver". His cell phone went off and he picked it up. "O'Conner." he said.
"Gumball." said Michael.
"How's that again?" asked Brian as he put down the magazine.
"Gum-ball." repeated Michael.
Brian hung up the phone and ran for the door.
A dark-haired woman stopped him. "Brian, where are you going?" she asked.
"It's the Gumball Rally, Mia." said Brian. "Last time I was in Japan, I spoke with the organizer, Michael Bannon. He said he was planning to return to the U.S. and put on another race here. I just have to pick up the car and meet him at the airport."
"Wait, Brian." said Mia. "Dom and Letty are taking part in the race as well. If you run across them, be careful. There's still a few things they won't look past."
"Alright." said Brian. "I'll be careful."
"Oh, one more thing." said Mia. She kissed him and said "Good luck."
Minutes later, Brian had driven to a storage yard and the attendant showed him to Michael's unit.
"According to Mr. Bannon, this key goes to the storage locker." said Brian.
"And the other?" asked the attendant.
"That goes to what's in it." said Brian.
"Here it is." said the attendant as he stopped at a unit large enough to store a car.
Brian unlocked the locker and slid open the door. Inside was a blue 2017 Dodge Viper GTS with white stripes. The hood had a pair of deep vents, the headlights had been tinted, and the front had been fitted with canards and a carbon fiber splitter. Carbon fiber skirts had been installed, ducts had been cut into the rear fenders, a lip spoiler had been affixed to the rear, a carbon fiber diffuser had been mounted on the rear bumper, and the rear panel had been painted blue. Fifteen spoke rims had been mounted on the wheels.
"Whoa." said Brian.
"Yeah, she's a beaut." said the attendant. "You're taking her out of here?"
"Sure am." said Brian.
Brian took out his cell phone and dialed. He waited for someone to pick up, then said "Yeah, I've got a friend coming in on a charter flight. His name's Mike Bannon. When is he expected to land?" He waited for an answer, then said "Okay, thanks."
He ran over to the Viper and told the attendant "Hey, how does this sound? I'll start renting this today with the contents being the car I came here in. I'll give you something extra if you park the car in here for me."
"I can do that." said the attendant.
"Thanks." said Brian as he handed over a wad of money, then climbed into the Viper. "Okay, let's get some Mopar going." he said. He fastened his seat belt, then brought the V-10 to life.
He put the car into gear as the opening theme started, then peeled out. He drove out of the storage yard at a leisurely pace, then floored it on the street.

Michael and his group disembarked the plane.
"Should we wait for your driver?" asked Mr. Bright.
The Viper raced onto the runway.
"Don't bother. He's here." said Michael as Brian raced up to the group.
Brian stopped next to them and Michael got into the passenger seat.
"Mr. Bannon." said Brian.
"Hello, Bullet." said Michael.
Brian then raced away, executing a U-turn in the process.
"So, how'd you like the Highway Star?" asked Michael.
"The what?" asked Brian.
"The car." said Michael. "We assigned the code name Highway Star to her, like the song."
"Oh, it's a nice car." said Brian.
"Glad you like it." Michael grinned. "So, before we make tracks down to Miami, were you able to get any intel on that guy I suggested could give us a challenge?"
"Yep. According to what I was able to find out, he's been laying low for a while." said Brian. "No doubt, he's planning his next job."
Michael's phone chimed as he got a text alert from Mr. Bright.
"We'll soon find out whether he's interested or not." Michael confirmed.
In Hastings, Nebraska, a brown-haired man named Alex Tully looked over a set of plans with his men.
"Okay, here's how we're going to do this." he said. "Kevin, this patch over here could use some new rosebushes."
"I'm on it." said Kevin.
"Dylan, the client requested spruce trees." said Alex. "Can you take care of that?"
"I'll get to it now." said Dylan.
"Riley, I'm not sure if this drainage channel is going to hold." said Alex. "I want you to take a look at it and fix it if possible."
"I'll see what I can do." said Riley.
"Okay, that's all." said Alex. "Let's go out there and get to work."
Alex and his men left the table and went back to landscaping the yard. Another man ran up to Alex and said "Hey, boss? There's a guy here to see you."
Alex walked over to a small tent and found Mr. Bright waiting for him.
"Mr. Tully." said Mr. Bright. "We meet again."
Alex grabbed him and threw him up against the nearest wall. "What do you want?" he asked. "Haven't you screwed with me enough?"
"Is that really necessary?" asked Mr. Bright. "I just came with a proposal for you."
"Proposal?" asked Alex. "Proposal for what?"
"I thought you'd like to pit your driving skills against a new group of opponents." said Mr. Bright.
Alex released him. "Talk." he said.
"Last year in Japan," said Mr. Bright "a man named Michael Bannon assembled a group of racers to take part in a race across the country."
"Michael Bannon?" asked Alex. "Are you talking about the Gumball Rally?"
"Indeed." said Mr. Bright. "This year, Bannon has moved the race back to the U.S. In fact, he just flew in yesterday. I helped him to make the arrangements and I told him that I could hook him up with a worthy competitor."
"What's in it for me?" asked Alex.
"Do this race and you'll be out of my hair for good." said Mr. Bright. "If you win, I'll let you hold onto the Gumball trophy."
"No mind screws?" asked Alex. "No very illicit tasks? No win-at-all-costs opponents?"
"Mr. Tully, this is the gentlemen's sport." said Mr. Bright. "Mr. Bannon assures me we'll keep it friendly."
"Well...okay." said Alex. "I'll get my hands on the Challenger and..."
"Wait." said Mr. Bright. "The Challenger is a beast, I know that. But I think that you deserve a car fit for a professional." He walked over to the tent and said "You need this."
He pulled the canvas off of the tent. Alex stared in shock. In front of him was a black 2005 Ford GT with blue racing stripes and side stripes. Slats had been fitted into the hood vents, a carbon fiber splitter and canards had been mounted on the front, vents had been mounted on the fenders, and aerodynamic mirrors had been installed. New side skirts had been fitted, a higher spoiler had been mounted, a carbon fiber diffuser had been installed under the rear bumper, the rear deck sported vents, and a carbon fiber panel had been laid over the rear window. The car sported ten pairs of parallel spokes.
"This is mine?" he asked.
"The keys are in the car." said Mr. Bright. "We call it the Hawkmoon 269. The race starts next week. Good luck."
So, as the Gumball Rally was all set to make its return to the United States, the invitations were sent out. The only question was who would be the team fortunate enough to walk away with both the Gumball trophy and the glory.
