It was hot. The summertime had usually brought about such weather. The warm breeze flowed throughout the trees, rustling their leaves and creating a peaceful crackling sound.
"Damn it."
Throwing his notebook to the side, Spencer decided he needed a break from his work. It wasn't that he didn't know the answer, it was just that he couldn't focus. He hadn't remembered the last time he had a peaceful nights sleep.
Falling onto his back, Spencer let out a deep sigh. He could use the relaxation. He felt the need to close his eyes and drift into a deep sleep. His breathing started to slow before he inhaled deeply.
Daisies?
Spencer quickly fluttered his eyes open only to find another young man his age looking down at him.
"Aren't they pretty?" He chuckled.
"Ethan?" Spencer questioned as he brushed the sleep out of his eyes.
"I mean, I guess I am too." The young man flashed Reid a grin before he let out a laugh.
"Shut up." Reid softly punched him in the arm. He enjoyed Ethan's presence.
"You need to stop overworking yourself man. Appreciate the little things in life." Ethan remarked as he placed the small flower in Spencer's palm.
"It is pretty." Spencer smiled. It was the little things that Ethan did, he always knew how to let him relax. It made sense to Spencer, Ethan was his only friend at the academy. Really his only friend in general.
"I knew you would like it." Ethan smiled softly. "Got any wild facts about daisies?"
"Daisies often symbolize innocence and purity." Spencer twiddled with the flower in his thumbs.
"How cute." Spencer felt Ethan's eyes locked onto him. "They're also the prettiest flower in the world."
"You think so?"
"I know so."
They weren't talking about daisies anymore.
Years later, Spencer and Ethan were nearly ready to graduate. They were excited for the time the moment they stepped foot into the school.
Until Ethan no longer felt that same excitement.
The night was cold. Blistering cold. It wasn't summer anymore.
Spencer's brain felt mushy, the sting of alcohol burning his senses. He found himself still rubbing Ethan's bare back, even though he knew he was asleep. The boy placed a tender kiss against his partner's back, still sore from their earlier activities.
He watched the other man's sides slowly move up and down, his soft snores echoing into their apartment room.
Before he drifted off to sleep, he wrapped his arms around Ethan, hoping to never let go.
"I love you." He whispered into the cold night.
That next morning, Spencer awoke to empty sheets.
Figuring that he had gone off somewhere in the city, Spencer hoped in the shower to help ease his hangover and the smell of alcohol along with it. After he grabbed a towel to wrap around his waist, he decided to run to the kitchen to grab breakfast.
As he walked to the fridge he noticed the little flower settled atop a sticky note taped to the counter.
It was a daisy.
It hadn't taken long for Spencer to read it, he could read 20,000 words a minute.
That didn't stop the inability to understand it. He read it a thousand and one more times, yet, still felt his brain twisting and turning the gears inside.
As the tears fled to his eyes and his throat started to close, Spencer put down the note and sat down in the chair, letting out the pain he felt inside of his heart.
The daisy fell onto the floor, leaving the past behind and starting afresh.
"I love you too." Ethan whispered, boarding his next flight.
