Prologue

Pink haze surrounded her as she laid still, body slack. She could've sworn she felt a ghostly hand combing through her hair, gently pushing her messy locks from her closed eyes. Slowly, she let her lashes flutter as she opened her eyes. Though she tried, she found herself glued to where she was. Kagome tightened her hands into fists when her wrists refused to budge. No matter how hard she fought, she couldn't lift her arms, not even an inch. Her legs were in the same state. It was as if she was bound by invisible chains. She didn't like it.

Without warning, she felt that hand course back through her bangs, and blue eyes automatically sought out the owner of the hand. Her eyes widened as all words died on her tongue.

In all her glory, Lady Midoriko sat at her side. One of her hands gently combed through her hair while the other kept her grip on a shining, sharp sword.

"Do not fear when you wake again, Kagome." Midoriko's voice was calm and composed as she spoke. Midoriko's words confused her, but the ghostly-sheer priestess didn't offer any explanation as she turned to look down at her. Deep indigo eyes met bright blue, and a soft, sympathetic smile appeared on her lips. "They can do no real harm to you. Remember, you're much stronger than them. Stronger, smarter, and far braver." Midoriko closed her eyes, her smile growing a fraction. "I will be with you every step of the way, my child."

She had no idea who Midoriko was speaking of, but all words she tried to form died instantly the moment they reached her tongue. Without warning, that pink haze began to fade. Along with it went the deceased priestess at her side. She looked back down at her wrists, and she watched, horrified as gray straps slowly became visible. She was no longer floating in the haze. No, not anymore.

She was tied and bound on an operation table.

A strange numbness pulsed through her veins, yet she was still acutely aware of everything around her. Her senses were still active and painted her a picture through her still-closed eyes. She wasn't alone here. She could feel an unfamiliar aura just to the right of her. They were close enough to touch her, she realized. A second later, she felt as cold fingers trailed down her right arm, and she nearly cringed away at the touch alone. This aura… it didn't feel good.

There were beeps and hums of all sorts of different machinery from all around her. It served as background noise, and it reminded her of a hospital. She knew she wasn't in a hospital, however. The auras around her… they were so grimy and gross and so unlike the pristine cleanliness of any hospital she recognized.

A sickly sweet and slightly metallic taste washed over her tongue as something sharp pricked the middle of her right arm. She flinched out of reflex, and she heard a faint hum come from her right side. She quickly realized it had been a needle jammed into the crook of her arm, and not even a second later, a scratchy cloth gently dabbed at the spot around the needle before it was ultimately removed. She heard as it clattered noisily onto a metal table- rattling other tools resting atop it upon hitting them.

As she laid there, Kagome began to place the stagnant stench of the room. The air was stale and crisp, and a metallic odor practically dominated the entire area. It was impossible to ignore the longer she laid there. How come it'd taken her so long to recognize the stench alone?

It was blood.

The overpowering odor of metallic crimson practically oozed from the walls of this room.

Kagome kept her eyes closed tight, even as that hand from before slowly danced down her arm. Rough fingers grazed her wrist, carefully maneuvering the binds strapping her down in order to reach the inner part of her wrist. They felt for her pulse, and a second later another hum came from this stranger.

"You can stop pretending to be asleep, Miss Higurashi," he said. He spoke with a thick accent. As he said those words, a harsh pain ricocheted through her head, and she fought to will it away. Nothing worked, and soon nausea came to join. Her skin felt hot as her discomfort mounted. "You're not very good at it, after all."

She slowly opened her eyes, narrowing icy blue at the figure towering over her. She wanted to speak, to say anything, but nothing formed. Her pain doubled, and she felt like she might blackout from the pain alone.

"Oh, you look so angry…" he trailed off with a low hum. "Don't worry. I had no luck in finding that magical little jewel within you, and believe me- I looked," he said, his tone growing quieter as he leaned down closer to her. He got close enough that she could feel his breath caressing her cheek, and she wanted nothing more than to cringe away as far away as she possibly could. No matter how hard she tried, the binds holding her in place kept her captive.

She slowly caught onto the words he said as she laid there, and she turned blue eyes back to meet his gaze. "W-What do you mean?" He couldn't possibly retrieve the jewel from her- not like how Mistress Centipede so easily tore it from her body. It had returned to her body upon its completion, yes, but it'd merged into her soul. It could never leave her body again.

He stood back up and chuckled lowly. "You're healing is certainly impressive."

That comment made her heart plummet into her stomach. A second later, she swapped her focus to the metal table on her right side. It was just low enough for her to see the multitude of tools scattered about it. The silver metal was tarnished by a sickening amount of dried blood, puddles of it pooling, and some still drying as they rested uncleaned upon the table. Beside the table was a basket of bloodied rags, and she realized then why the scent of blood was so smothering.

"Regardless, whether I have the jewel or not, well, you still have momentous potential," he said as he rose back up to his full height. "I should let you know," he said as he turned towards her again. "I did my best to improve you whilst you were still under."

Kagome narrowed her eyes at that comment. "Improve?"

"Yes, yes," he said before sighing. "None of that seemed to work, unfortunately. Seems you'll have to remain as you are. So sorry about that."

The pain she felt began to ebb away, and Kagome tightened her hands into fists once more. With a low growl, she tried to yank her hands free, to no avail. She could feel the straps digging into her skin, but she didn't let that hinder her fight. He'd turned his back to her, walking away as if to retrieve something from the counter along the wall.

"Every single one I attempted to inject you with melted away from your bloodstream as if by magic. I wonder if that jewel had anything to do with it, by chance?" he hummed curiously. "Or I wonder… perhaps it was you?"

"Shut up!" Kagome snapped at him as she fought to free herself. " Shut up! Shut up! Shut up! Let me go!"

He didn't seem phased by her ire any. Instead, he turned slowly, a different syringe held in his hand as he once again approached her. His brows arched at seeing her fight so fervently. "Once again, you've exceeded every expectation I had for you, Miss Higurashi. You seem back to your full strength already. How magnificent that is! You, my dear, certainly are quite the scientific marvel."

She glared, halting for only a second as he paused beside her.

"Alas, there is no point in fighting anymore," he said, his tone going soft as if he spoke to a toddler. "You've fought for so long, as it is. Rest, and feel at home in your new place." He rose the syringe and gripped her still-bound arm, and fear pricked in her soul. Her vision blurred as tears welled up, a few falling free to caress her cheeks. "This should be an effective enough dose to put you to sleep for a few hours so that I may have you safely transferred to your room. Just a precaution to make sure you don't leave too soon or harm anyone."

"Don't you dare touch me with that!" Kagome screamed, ignoring the scratchy pain that followed the moment she let her voice rise a bit too loud. She began to struggle harder than before against her binds, but nothing she did seemed to help her any. "H-Help! Somebody, please! Help me!"

"Shh…" he shushed her gently, "everything will be fine." He cleaned her arm off before unceremoniously sticking the needle of the syringe into her arm. "This is enough to kill a normal individual, but you are far from normal. You'll be asleep very soon. Just calm down." He pressed the plunger on the other end of the syringe, and a clear liquid was injected into her bloodstream.

She ignored him and kept fighting to free herself. However, after a few seconds passed, Kagome felt as her eyelids began to droop. Exhaustion washed over her like a heavy blanket and her body soon became motionless as what remained of her consciousness slipped away from her.

C.R: I've been waiting for JustPenguin to post her notices before I uploaded this. I will be adopting Lost In Paradise and Shattered Diamonds. She still has a few stories on her account up for adoption, so if you're interested then definitely get in contact with her.

So I've been given the creative freedom to change a bit here and there to the plot of this story. One of those things might be the pairing. I'm also changing the point of Kagome being experimented on. Instead, for the most part, she was captured for the sake of obtaining the Shikon no Tama.

I remember reading some of this story around the time it initially got posted onto this site. I know the initial pairing was going to be Pietro/Kagome. I don't know if I'm going to keep it as that pairing, or have him develop more of an older brother relationship with her. Honestly, I like either option so I'm torn. On one hand, I love Pietro so much. On the other, protective big brother bond makes my heart go doki doki.

I'm going to ask you all what you think. Keep the pairing as is, or change it? And if so, pairing ideas?

Anyway, thank you guys for reading, and I hope you all enjoyed! Hopefully I caught all the errors before posting, but if not sorry.

Please remember to Review&Favorite&Follow, thank you!

Bye for now~
