Gotham City, Night, Unidentified Earth
Driving in her Jaguar Convertible, which she managed to get back from that crazy bitch, Harley Quinn, Dinah Lance aka the Black Canary headed down to her assigned destination. According to Renee, there was some weird light, that looked like a tear, that kept popping up in Chinatown. Arriving in the scene, Dinah got out of her Jag and strutted down the alley looking for ... whatever the hell she was supposed to look for. Almost immediately, Dinah saw the giant tear appear right in front of her but almost immediately it flickered out.
"What the hell?" Dinah uttered.
Hearing a sound again, the same sound as the hole, Dinah turned around and saw that it appeared again. Stepping closer, Dinah eventually startled back when something came out of the hole: a person. Looking at the woman, Dinah saw she was dressed in a black leather jacket and pants with yellow lining and some fishnet meshing woven into the suit; she looked like biker check except, bikers don't usually wear domino masks. She had long blonde hair with a stunning face with noticeable cheekbones, full lips, and although the lighting in the alley was poor, green eyes.
"What the hell?" Laurel Lance said as she looked around at her surroundings and at the woman in front of her. She had very light brown skin, dyed blonde hair which was parted to her left side with dreadlocks. She also had a nose ring, full lips with a lovely face was dressed in dark blue colors and looked like a chick from the 70s.
"Huh, I should be saying that don't you think?" Dinah suggested to the mystery woman.
"Right, sorry. A woman just pops out of nowhere in the middle of ... huh, where are we exactly?" Laurel asked after looking around wondering if she would recognize something in the landscape.
"Gotham City, Chinatown district," Dinah answered tilting her head as she was still in confusion.
"Gotham? Great, just when my situation couldn't get any worse. Unless your Gotham isn't as bad on your Earth as it is on mine." Laurel retorted.
"What do you mean, your Earth?" Dinah questioned.
"Trust me you do not wanna know," Laurel replied. "Anyway, who are you?"
"They call me the Black Canary," Dinah answered even though she was still confused out of her mind. What's crazier, is that the woman in front of her had the same bewildered look that Dinah did.
"What wait? You're the Black Canary?" Laurel said confused as hell.
"Yeah."
"Your Dinah Laurel Lance?" Laurel further inquired.
"How did you know?" Dinah said intensely as she was provoked that a stranger knew her full name.
Removing her mask, Laurel decided to come clean as she figured she wouldn't be on this Earth much longer. "Cause, my name's Dinah Laurel Lance. I'm the Black Canary too."
Pausing for a moment, Dinah could only utter one word in disbelief. "Bullshit."
Nearby Chinese Restaurant
Laurel eventually managed to prove that she wasn't lying or crazy to Dinah, by showing her a Canary Cry which she used on a nearby dumpster. Somehow, the two agreed to go get a bite to eat. Although they looked nothing alike it turns out they had another thing in common, food preferences. They both order the shrimp lo mein with egg rolls and enjoyed using the hot dipping sauce. Laurel also gave her doppelganger a brief tutorial about the multiverse and other dimensional counterparts.
"Mmm, you know it's nice to know you can the same types of food no matter what Earth you're visiting," Laurel commented after taking a bite to eat.
"Okay, I guess I'm gonna address the elephant in the room ... why do we look so different?" Dinah questioned hilariously. "How come your a skinny white girl instead of a biracial bombshell like me?"
"I got no idea, I've met a Superman that looks like my friend Ray and another that resembled my prom date," Laurel answered. "And I'm not that skinny, this is lean muscle." She shot back.
"Whatever," Dinah replied and finished her egg roll. "Now that I think about it you kinda resemble my mom," She added.
"So I gotta ask why do you go by Dinah instead of Laurel?" Laurel asked.
"I could ask you the same question and I'd probably get the same answer," Dinah said knowing it was a personal preference probably.
"Are you close with your mom?" Laurel asked taking a sip of her water.
"I was," Dinah replied after a moment's pause. "What about you and your mom ... is she?"
"She's alive ... but ah, we don't exactly have the closest relationship," Laurel admitted.
"Why not?"
"Let's just say it all started when she made some very questionable choices towards me after my sister "went away" for a while," Laurel answered.
"Sister. You have a sister?" Dinah said surprised.
"Yeah. You don't? Laurel asked.
"Nah, can't say I haven't wondered what having one would've been like," Dinah revealed.
"Well, it hasn't always been a picnic between me and Sara. Her name's Sara by the way. And while I love her, there have been times she's been a real bitch to me. Then again I've probably been the same to her more than once." Laurel acknowledged. "What about your dad? I take it that he's the one whose-"
"Black and yeah he is ... was. Died when I was 2, don't really remember him at all." Dinah filled her doppelganger in.
"Sorry to hear that. For what it's worth, if he was anything like my dad, you woulda loved him." Laurel assured her and Dinah gave her a sad smile.
The two continued talking for some time for the past hour, they were loaded with questions for one another. Finding similarities and differences between the both fascinating and confusing, with Dinah being surprised that Laurel was a lawyer in her day job. While Laurel kinda impressed that Dinah was a club singer. Comparing notes, this discovered their different tastes in music, with James Brown being a personal favorite for Dinah; while Laurel liked listening to the Megadeth. Eventually, it was getting late and Laurel knew that she needed to leave to get back to her Earth.
"Okay, okay. One more question, before I leave." Laurel said enthusiastically.
"Shoot."
"Oliver. What does your Oliver look like?" Laurel asked as she wondered if he looked different in this universe too.
"Whose Oliver?" Dinah asked her.
"Oliver. Oliver Queen." Laurel repeated and Dinah just shook her head in confusion. "Huh, well you'll probably meet him eventually. When you do, good luck.
"Why he an asshole or something?" Dinah guessed.
"He can be. In fact, he can real dick sometimes. But he'll get under your skin and hurt you in the worst ways possible ... but make you feel alive more than anyone else and you'll never find a man more passionate or driven than him. A man who would do just about anything for you because he loves you. That's who he is." Laurel explained and Dinah found herself to be curious when it came to her love life in recent years any man she brought to her bed would either leave or she'd kick 'em out before they got too close.
Eventually, the two paid for their meal and left the restaurant. "Well, this was the most bizarre night of my life," Dinah commented as they exited the building. "But it was enjoyable."
"Same, take care of yourself, Dinah," Laurel told her counterpart and then left for the alley to return to the reality fissure and get back to S.T.A.R. Labs.
"Back at you, Laurel," Dinah said as she departed, and outta curiosity, Dinah pulled out her phone and googled Oliver Queen and she saw several photos of the man. "Hmm, hot. Yeah, yeah I would totally hit that." She said with a smile.
Author's Notes: I liked Harley Quinn & the Birds of Prey, it wasn't a perfect movie by far but I did enjoy it; kinda reminded me of Quentin Tarantino's films, which I'm a huge fan of. But I really liked their version of Black Canary, it was very different from other versions I've seen from the character and there was something unique about her interpretation that I really liked. I really felt and understood Dinah's jadedness and reluctance to be a hero considering what happened to her mother while also at the same time being the hero we see in the comics
Lately, there has been talking on social media about fans talking for a Black Canary TV show on HBO. While a part of me would love to see that especially considering the questionable if not sometimes flat-out abusive treatment to the women who've held the mantle in the Arrowverse, I would much rather see a Black Canary solo film. This is because I don't think it's possible for Jurnee Smollet to do 2 TV shows at once considering her current role on Lovecraft County unless the suggested series would be limited. But I'd still prefer a film, to a TV Show.
Either way, I'd love to see more of Jurnee as Black Canary, and I would also like to suggest that Katheryn Winnick from Vikings play her mother. I think she'd make a great Dinah Drake and has expressed interest in playing Black Canary too.
Fun Fact, Tyler Hoechlin was Katie Cassidy's prom date apparently.
