Hello again, everybody!
Me and my big mouth should keep quiet, hahaha, because of that, I accepted the Prompt 83' from SuitsPrompts on twitter and well, this is the result. Sorry, sorry for the late post, school and work are driving me crazy. Please don't be so mean to me, I apologize for any grammatical errors I know this may have, my first language is not English, but I promise I'm working hard on it.
This is for Cami ( cammilu_ on twitter), thank you so much for cheering me up to post, Honey. ¡Te abrazo fuerte!
D: Unfortunately, 'Suits' doesn't belong to me, it belongs to USA Networks, but Darvey Love and everything that comes from it does.
Oh, God. I really have to shut up.
Enjoy.
FOR EVER
There comes a scream across the sky, but now there is nothing to compare it to.
No. This whole thing wasn't even being fair. Dammit, the nights with Harvey never feel sad, the days should never end like this, especially if you've just had some good news. Forty-five minutes ago Harvey called her to be ready to go celebrate how they finally got their asses kicked by that bastard Andrew Malik.
30 minutes ago she got the call, it rings twice. Even though the screen was dialing his name, it wasn't the younger Specter who was answering lovingly on the other side of the line.
"Hello, my sweetest and boldest Specter" Donna waited for the answer that Marcus always gave her with an extended smile, but there was a cold silence.
"Donna..." uttered the voice almost in a whisper.
"Katie! Darling, is everything...?"
"Marcus died."
She closed her eyes and felt a shiver run through her body settling in the pit of her stomach.
'Hello, my venal, fierce redhead, what do your deep eyes reflect today?'
Pain.
Donna's heart was thundering. She fixed her gaze on the huge high-rises of New York City, thinking of a way to let the man who was her everything know that he had lost his beloved younger brother in the most unexpected way.
"Honey, I'm home!" a running joke and Harvey tossed the keys onto the kitchen island. He found Donna's shape a few feet away "You should have seen him, Donna!" said Harvey with a glowing smile, he almost felt like hell for having to wipe that joy away. "I don't know which face was better, Forstman's or Malik's, seriously-"
"Harvey, I have to tell you something," she said interrupting him. Her eyes became crystalline, Harvey raised his eyebrows in surprise.
"What's wrong, Donna?" something was definitely wrong, since they got together, she was never sad, but her broken look and flushed face reflected that she had recently cried. "What's wrong?"
He sees her hold back a sigh.
"Come with me, my love. Sit next to me" she held out her hands for him to hold.
"Donna..." Harvey took her hands without moving from his place "Please, what's wrong?"
She let out the air in her lungs and looked into his eyes. "Kate called. Marcus had a heart attack... And died."
He stopped breathing.
"No. It's not possible..." his voice cracked and he prayed to God this was a fucking nightmare.
How?
When?
Why?
In that instant she closed the space between them and they melted into an embrace. Automatically he placed his strong hands on her waist; Donna felt Harvey's body slide between hers, heavy as a stone.
She felt him holding his breath, and she knew perfectly well that he was still unblinking, she put her arms around his neck and pulled him much closer to her body without leaving a single space, she felt the tears run over the exposed skin of his shoulders.
"Let it out, baby..." said Donna gently stroking the back of his hair, "don't feel embarrassed to cry for your brother. I'm here."
It was then that Harvey broke down.
A loud cry of pain came from his throat, the uncontrollable tears were still rolling from his chocolate orbs, he was still hugging Donna but his legs shaking "It's okay, love. I'm not going anywhere."
Then gravity won and they both collapsed to the floor, Harvey buried himself in the neck of the woman he loves and wept inconsolably at the loss of his brother.
Of all the damn bad people to walk the face of the earth, it had to be him.
God, Why?
He, who was such a devoted and loving father, a wonderful son - so much better than he was himself and could forgive things that in no other life could he - and even for all his faults, had been an attentive and loving husband, always concerned for the welfare of his home, and was even a better brother, always finding the right words to handle family tensions.
His mind was still in a loop of questions: How was this possible, what happened, why him, why now that everything was going so well and things were starting to make sense?
"It's not true. Tell me it's not true..." he said in a voice almost imperceptible to human ears. But Donna never lies, she couldn't play such a sad and cruel joke on him. "Donna doesn't lie... This can't be true, but Donna never lies."
Harvey wasn't even aware that he was repeating the words that only Donna could hear, she pressed him with all her might to her chest and allowed herself to cry beside him, why now that he was happy with the love of his life and she was about to be officially part of the family, why was life hitting him with this?
He was immensely happy, just last Thursday when he got home, he heard Marcus' voice burst into laughter, his eyes scanned the place for his brother, but he saw Donna sitting on the couch laughing towards the monitor. It was a video call.
"Did he really do that?" he asked wiping the corners of his eyes "Please tell me you recorded that!"
"He really did!" she said giggling, "unfortunately I couldn't record it, because I didn't have a camera or something to hand, otherwise, rest assured, you would have been the first person to see it."
"I did what?" said Harvey sitting down next to her and placed a kiss on her temple.
"Oh honey, you're home" she kissed him back and they intertwined their fingers "I didn't hear you come in."
"No, of course not. I was being completely ignored by you two. Am I interrupting a date or something?" he pretended to be hurt and rolled his eyes feigning disdain.
"Oh loser. Hell yeah, get the hell out of here. This beautiful woman here has my attention tonight."
The three of them chatted for a couple more hours. Harvey smiled at the image, seeing the most important woman in his life with Marcus getting along so well, with a complicity similar to that of two brothers made his heart full of happiness. He had to put his hands on her knee to contain the feeling of completeness. He knew Marcus loved Donna, after him of course, he was her 'no. 2 fan' and wished for years that the older Specter would stop the one night stands and look at the beautiful brave redhead who worked beside him, she was the first person to support him in them being together, long before Kate, he would tell her, 'you need to get your head out of that tight ass of yours and tell her how you feel, because if you don't, I'll be the one making her Mrs. Specter.'
Today was Thursday. He swallowed bitterly and gave a disconsolate cry.
Why now that he'd made up with his mother and...?
Mum. And the little ones...
He looked up and found Donna's sad, warm eyes. "She's stable." She read his mind, as always.
"She didn't get the news in the best way either, but she is at home, has been seen by a doctor and is under the care of a nurse. The boys are at Katie's sister's house, they will stay there until we arrive in the morning. I've already booked the transportation tickets, she's waiting for us so she can make all the funeral preparations, she can't do it on her own."
No, he definitely couldn't either.
"Will you come with me?" Harvey asked, his body still shaking and his hands were cold. "Because I won't-"
"Harvey, of course I'll go with you. We're family, we're in this together." With her soft hands, she wiped away the tears that were falling down her cheeks, but they were determined to keep flowing, Harvey himself noticed them when he looked at much of Donna's wet blouse, he didn't know at what point he had removed his tie and suit jacket, surely with prior help.
Oh, God.
He didn't know where he found the strength to get to his feet. He looked down at Donna's feet, which were bruised from being in the same position for so long with his weight on her, and reached out to her, wanting to hug her again and say something more, but again a wave of anger and helplessness swept through his body.
What could he have done to stop it, did he know he was sick, did he know this could have happened, why didn't he tell him anyway? if only he had hugged him a little tighter the last time he saw him...
Tonight no one would sleep. The whole thing was a wasteland of grief.
"Damn it!" she said again with tears streaming down her face, bringing the hands to his head, pulling at his hair "Why did it have to be him if I've been the bloody bastard all this time?"
"Harvey..." Just at this moment the redhead felt her super powers simply fade away. The words were stuck in her throat as she felt ignorant on how to handle the situation.
"Why my little brother?" The lawyer sat up only to return to Donna's arms. She managed with all the strength her body had, to carry Harvey to the couch, where they once again flopped down.
His mind flew back a few years ago, when a young Harvey bared his soul to her and told her about an emotional talk he had with his mother about death before Marcus was on the map.
"Mom: where are they taking the dead to?" asked the little blond boy with big, curious eyes.
"My little darling, you're going too slow with your snack. Hurry up, we'll be late with your Aunt Eve" Harvey frowned at that answer, Lily pretending not to have listened in the hope that his son wouldn't repeat the question again.
"Mumaaaaaaaaa, I asked you something." Little Harvey raised his spoon demanding attention and Lily turned her head slightly to look at him.
"I mean...I know where the body goes or what happens to it if you don't want it to be down and all that, but...you, where are you really going, if I die am I going to forget about you or are you going to forget about me?"
Harvey's words struck a chord in his mother's heart. She found it fascinating that someone so small could have such a level of understanding and maturity.
"Oh, my little boy, why do you think that, I'm never going to forget you, not in this life or any other life, because I'm going to go before you." She kissed her son's head and hugged him. "Let me tell you something, Harvey. I love to think that even though our physical body left the earth, something of us stays with the people you love, in every part of nature, in the sun, the rain, the wind that kisses your face. When someone loves you, my dear Harvey, when you love someone and that person dies; there remains the love, the learning, the memories and the joys that have stayed with us, always in our memories, in our hearts.
"Yes?" said Harvey, looking at his mother with big, curious eyes.
"Yes" she said nodding with tears about to come, she was so moved. " Also, every time someone important to your heart dies, you get a star in the sky, one that guides you every step of the way and is with you every moment."
"Yes?" The boy was incredulous, but full of interest in the subject.
"Of course they do, my love. The people we love always remain close, no matter how far away they are."
"I love you, Harvey. I'm here for you." Donna said gently stroking his hair and holding him tight. "I hate to say that... I can't find the words to express to you how I feel."
He shook his head a little and settled into her chest "A simple thank you isn't enough. And I love you. Being here for me means the world, Donna. I know this is hard for you too. You loved him too."
"I do. Just...remember that talk little five-year-old Harvey had with Mom, will you?"
He sighed regretfully and closed his eyes. "Yes, I do."
"We'll be in this together, I'm never letting go of your hand."
She lowered her head to meet Harvey's lips in a gentle kiss that managed to put all the pieces of her wounded heart back together. They stayed cuddled on the couch for what seemed like all night. After all, nothing could be that good. After a few months. After a second of a happy and peaceful life, the damned fate suddenly cut it short by a black hole that pierces your chest and throws us into a way of life we don't know how to lead.
To a life where she will no longer be able to pick up the phone to call her brother, ask his advice on how not to be a dick to Donna, talk shit and plan a weekend together.
To a life where his children will grow up without their father by their side, where they will be just as successful as he was, following his example and he, from heaven, will be proud.
To a life where his mother had to see one of her children depart, taking a piece of her heart and soul with him.
To a life filled with his absence.
'I love you, brother. And I always will.'
They would all get through this together. The joy and love Marcus left among them all was immense, and just as his mother had told him when he was a boy: Harvey now had a star, and it was the brightest of them all.
The day you don't see me, don't think I'm gone. You will feel that I am with you, today and always by your side. They never go away completely, because what they have given us is ours... Forever.
