Jordan was walking home from school. He had unfortunately missed the bus, all because he had been wating for his brother. But it turned out that Jonathan was going to hang out with some friends after school anyways, so that was all for nothing.
He kicked the gravel on the road. There was no battery left on his phone. 'atleast the sun is out.' He thought, feeling the familiar tingle on his skin.
He kicked a bigger rock this time. It flew suprisingly far, but no one was there to see him, so no harm done.
He could run home and it would only take a few minutes. But there was no reason for that. What was there to do at home anyways? He knew his mom would only tell him to 'stay outside on such a sunny day.'
Besides, he wasn't all too excitet to go home for another reason aswell; his grandpa was visiting. He had never had a problem with the man before. But after his last visit, Jordan wasn't really looking forward to this one.
He had always known that Samuel wasn't a big fan of his father for some reason. But he had never understood why. Until he found out who his father really was, and all the pieces fell right into place.
His grandpa didn't like that their dad spent time with his kids. Because Jordan and Jonathans' father was superman. Not your usual family drama, but here we are.
Jordan also couldn't the deny the feeling that there was more to his grandpas' dislike. Jordan sometimes found himself thinking back to something he had once told him;
"Jordan, I know that you're showing signs of being...special"
The way he had said that word.
'Special'
And that look, you could almost say it was a look of disgust. Had he just imagined it? He wasn't sure.
After that, Jordan had started looking back at how Samuel had always been uncomfortable around Jordans' father.
How he always prefered to visit when dad was gone. How they pretended to be close, but always started fighting whenever Jordan and Jonathan had left the room.
And that look he gave dad.
The same way he now also looked at Jordan.
"Asshole." Jordan said, while kicking another rock that flew of the bridge he was now on. Jordan stopped to look at the ripples in the water.
He knew that his grandpa also kept folders of extraterrestrial beings on earth. Jordan was pretty sure his dad was on that list.
Was his name in that folder too? And in that case, did it say 'Jordan Kent' or his other name... 'Jor-el'?
How could he write his own grandchildrens' names' on that piece of paper? Jordan shuddered, he didn't want to think about it.
He felt something wet hit his forehead, was that rain? He looked up to the sky that had suddenly turned dark gray, and as if on que thunder rumbled somewhere in the distance.
'great' He thought.
Rain started pouring down as he continued his walk, but he didn't get far before he heard a loud screech. Jordans head snapped back towards the direction of the sound. Just in time to see a car plummet towards the river.
'Shit...
was that... grandpas' car!?'
He searched his pockets for the E.L.T.
"Fuck!" He swore to himself. He had forgotten it at home.
Jordan sprinted back to the bridge, the car was now slowly sinking in the water. Without pausing he dove into the river. Hitting the water at a force that would've seriously injured any other person, but Jordan was left untouched. Taking a deep breath, he swam towards the veichle that was now completely under water. Was he able to breathe under water? He didn't know, and he also didn't feel like taking the chance.
His grandpa was tugging at the door handle, and slamming his fists against the windows, but nothing seemed to work. Jordan grabbed the roof of the car. Samuel finally seemed noticed the boy, the old man had a look of suprise on his face.
Jordan tried bending the metal, it shifted under his fingers, but not enough for a person to fit through. He instead tried to open the doors.
The handle was ripped off.
"Shit" he swore to himself.
He signaled to his grandpa to 'back away'. The man listened and moved to the other side of the car. Jordan charged, hitting the window.
'What?' The impact had resulted in several cracks, but the window was still intact. He hit it again, and again but to no avail.
He looked to his grandpa, he seemed to be slowly fading out of consciousness.
"Bulletproof" The old man mouthed.
'Stupid military shit, that's why the metal was so hard to bend' he thought.
Jordan was strong, but nowhere near as strong as his dad. 'He will never be like you Kal-el' The words echoed in his head.
He knew the military had to create ridicoulusly strong gear now, with superpowered people popping up everywhere. But why his car?
'Paranoid idiot' He thought as he slammed his fist against the glass one last time.
Jordan was starting to panic, he needed air. His body was growing weaker by the minute.
The car had hit the bottom of the river now, and Samuel was almost unconscious. He looked around franticly, there must be something.
An idea popped up in his head. But was it possible?
He had to try.
He placed himself above the car, staring determinedly at the roof. He had only ever managed to do this on command once before.
He thought back to the memory of Jonathan laying on the ground, coughing up blood while being beaten up. And it was all Jordans' fault. He kissed Sarah, it was his fault, he should be the one coughing up blood, not Jon.
He could feel his eyes heat up. And suddenly there was a red glow in the water. Jordans' heat vision burned through the roof of the car, creating a big enough hole for him to swim through.
Samuel stared at him in shock, as he ripped the seatbelt apart and picked him up. He swam faster than ever, his legs kicking at an impossible speed. His grandpa was now completely unconscious.
'Don't die on me now'
They hit the surface, Jordan took a deep breath and placed the man on the ground.
He wasn't breathing.
Jordan thought back to what the man infront of him had once taught him:
"Think of the song 'staying alive', follow that beat and push as hard as you can, remember that a broken ribcage is always better than death."
Maybe that was a bit to much for the six year old brothers at the time, considering the fact that they had started crying. But now Jordan was thankful for that lesson.
But he couldn't push as hard as possible, that would crush the man.
Jordan exhaled a long breath and placed his hands on the mans' chest.
'You can do this.'
He starting pushing, not too hard, but still hard enough to potentially breake a bone or two, while quietly humming 'staying alive' to himself.
He could feel tears running down his cheeks.
"Come on grandpa! Come on!"
Jordan started giving up. He wanted to hit something, he wanted to scream.
"I take it back! I take back everything I thought about you! Just please don't die-" His voice broke. He balled his hands into fists.
"Why?" He sniffed.
But then there was a cough. Jordans head snapped back, his eyes were bloodshot and shiny.
"Grandpa!?"
There was another cough and Sams' eyes snapped open. "Oh my god I thought I would loose you!" The boy flung himself around the man.
"Oh calm down there boy, that's a little tight."
Jordan quickly backed away, panic in his eyes.
"Oh my god I'm sorry! Did I hurt you!?"
"Oh god no Jordan" The man said while sitting up. "Come here with ya." He streched his arms out for an embrace. Jordan once again hugged his grandpa.
"Thank you Jordan, thank you."
"I don't wanna loose you."
"Oh you won't, not with you around."
Samuel grabbed his grandsons' face and stared into his eyes.
"I know I've been an absolute asshole Jordan, but I just want you to know that I love you, kryptonian or not, you are my grandson."
Jordan felt like a huge weight just lifted from his shoulders.
"I love you too, grandpa."
