Nick had woken up this morning feeling like he had the flu. He was sweating, felt jittery, and was nauseous. Also, did he mention that he was super tired? Like, really really tired...
Nick pulled back the covers and stood up, only to find that as soon as he did, he felt lightheaded and thought he was going to faint. Thinking quickly, Nick sat back down on the side of his bed and took deep breaths.
Once, he felt steady enough, he slowly stood until he almost reached full height. He unconsciously had been slouching. Nick didn't think he was going to faint this time.
As soon as he got to the ZPD, Nick walked over to the front desk to greet Clawhauser. His slow and unsteady pace obviously showed to the cheetah.
"Hey, Nick? Are you feeling alright?" Clawhauser asked with concern on his face.
"Yeah, just a little off today." Nick replied trying to soothe his worries.
It was clear that the cheetah didn't believe him, as he still looked wary about his friend's well-being. Clawhauser eyed Nick carefully as he watched him stumble off.
"Oh, Nick! You're here!" called a familiar voice.
Nick shifted his gaze to look up at the bunny, who had apparently been waiting for him. He tried his best to give Judy a small smile. She smiled back at him, but it soon dropped.
"What took so long?"
Judy was quick to notice Nick's body language. He looked extra tired this morning and his normal and confident height had been decreased to a slouch. Judy saw him blink rapidly a few times and then he rubbed his eyes.
"Ah, just running a little behind."
Even though not quite believing him, Judy gave a small. She turned and started making her way over to the door of the bullpen, assuming Nick would follow. And, he really did try...
"What do you think we'll have today, Slick? Kidnappings, robberies?" Judy asked full of excitement.
When it was quiet, she turned around to see Nick, who had climbed up to the side of a large trashcan and was hoisting himself up with his arms. He looked to be vomiting. Judy immediately ran over to her friend to comfort him.
"Nick!"
Once Nick was done vomiting, he climbed down the side of the trashcan and sat against the wall. His arms were shaking as he placed them on his legs. Judy crouched beside Nick and put her paw on his shoulder.
"Nick, what's going on?"
Nick felt like his heart was racing in his chest for no apparent reason. Everything on him felt heavy, but at the same time, his stomach felt empty and hungry.
"If I'm gonna to be honest, Carrots, I don't know."
Their chat was cut short as they heard a yell coming from the bullpen.
"HOPPS! WILDE!"
Judy looked sad as she looked to Nick. They both knew that there was no way he could work today. Judy stood up and held out her paw to help Nick up. He thankfully took it, but after he was standing, he stumbled a bit.
"I'll tell Bogo, okay? Do you think you can get home?"
"Y-Yeah, I-I can figure something-"
"BOTH OF YOU GET IN HERE!"
They both looked at each other.
"NOW!"
When Nick and Judy entered the bullpen, they were met with Bogo's hard stare. The two of them went up to the chief to explain the circumstance of what was going on. But, the buffalo refused to listen to their excuses.
"Bogo, we-"
"Shush!"
"But, Sir-"
"Sit down, Hopps! I won't listen to your petty excuses as to why you two are not in here on time."
Nick held his paw up and opened his mouth to start talking, but-
"Don't you dare protest, Wilde."
-he didn't get the chance to.
Judy crossed her arms as she went to her chair, Nick stumbling behind her. As Judy hopped in her chair, she could see in the corner of her eye that Nick scrambled just to get in his own.
As the chief began handing out case files and assignments to everyone, Nick was spaced out. He couldn't seem to focus on anything other than trying to fight from passing out.
Finally, after an eternity, Bogo had reached them. He gave them a case file for a stolen car. The chief didn't even give time for either Judy or Nick to say anything, because he was already walking to the door. So, Judy took matters into her own paws. She jumped out of her chair and marched over to Bogo.
"Chief, if you would let me-"
"Hopps, I already told you, I don't want excuses about it. One of the main rules that we discussed is that you are in this room on time. That goes for you too, Wilde."
"Sir, if you had a care in the world for what actually happened, we wouldn't have to try to chase you down just totellyou."
The chief glared at Nick.
"Say something like that again, Wilde, and you are out of here." Bogo huffed.
Since, Bogo was finally quiet, Judy thought she could attempt to tell him what happened this morning. She put on a brave face and put her paws on her hips.
"Sir, Nick isn't feeling well,"
She paused.
"-he got sick this morning, and I've taken it into consideration that you probably wouldn't want a sick officer on your hands."
Chief Bogo took her words into consideration. He, in fact, could tell that the officer was different today. When the fox first walked in today, he had a feeling that something was bothering him.
But alas...
"If he's well enough to make those witty remarks, he's well enough to do his job." Bogo snapped and walked out of the room.
Judy looked to Nick, who stood behind her. She walked over to him with her droopy ears and sighed. Judy was frustrated with the chief. Why didn't he believe that Nick was actually sick? Was it because he was a fox?
"Well, I guess since we're hitting the road soon, do you mind if I get some food from the lounge? I'm starving." Nick said.
"Didn't you eat this morning?" Judy asked.
"I tried, but, at the time I didn't really have an appetite."
Hey guys. First chapter. How it doesn't suck.
