BORDERLINES
Chapter 1
The two figures were shielded by the thick moonless night. They flew fast, staying at low height and zigzagging abruptly to confuse their pursuer. Regardless, his aura kept getting closer.
"Let's land," the female eventually decided.
Ahead of her, the little boy slowed down and gave a questioning glance over his shoulder. She ignored him and touched the ground between the trees, letting him no choice but to follow her.
When he joined her, he found her panting and sweating with the small package still carefully stuck in her arms. "We won't get rid of him," she gasped.
"Don't say that! We can do it!" the kid objected.
She shook her head though. She was obviously concerned. "You don't know him. Trust me we won't make it. Now, listen to me, Goten. You're much faster than me and most of all, he can't spot you."
"Videl! What are you talking about? Let's go now, we're wasting time!" Goten hissed in impatience.
Videl cautiously lifted the cloth wrapping the bundle she had been carrying all along. A calm baby's face with eyes half-closed appeared. "At least, she's not crying. It's our luck," she said in a low voice, "Take her and bring her back as planned. I'll take care of him."
"How? He'll catch you! You can't fly fast enough! We mustn't slip up, that's the rule. You are the one who taught it to me," Goten pleaded again. "I can beat him if I really have to!" he added cockily.
Videl had a weak smile, but she handed the baby to him all the same. "Don't worry about me, I've seen worse. Do as I say and we'll see each other for breakfast tomorrow morning."
"I tell you I can fight him," Goten insisted with a pout as he grabbed the baby awkwardly.
"One day, you surely will Goten. But not today. Now, hurry," she whispered. Then, without waiting for his answer, she took off again in the opposite direction of the one they were following so far.
Goten called her angrily, but she was already far away. The infant started to moan as Videl's warmth was gone. Cursing between his teeth, the boy adjusted his grip over the little being as to embrace it fully. He realized in great annoyance that, being stuck with the baby, he had no option but to do as he was told.
Videl used all the energy she still had to get away from Goten as far as possible.
Their expedition had been long and tiring. Eighteen had forbidden such a rash operation and Videl had to admit that her plans had been utterly reckless, leaving aside the fact that she had dragged Goten in her wake, but she had eventually made it. Regardless of the danger looming over her now, she was glad she had overlooked her companions' disapproval to go through with her idea.
He was getting closer though.
She was exhausted and running out of ideas. In other circumstances, darkness and forest were perfect to hide but she was aware that he wasn't only using his eyes. Ultimately, as she was getting breathless, she decided to halt on the wide branch of a bushy oak tree.
She leaned against the thick trunk and she strived to lower her ki as much as possible. If only she hadn't lost her bracelet, he wouldn't have been able to detect her aura and she would have stood a fair chance to escape.
She observed warily the dome-shaped foliage above her while doing her best to calm her whistling breathing.
Suddenly, her pursuer's ki disappeared.
She closed her eyes to focus on the energies around her but she couldn't feel him anywhere. A foreboding grew in her guts and her heart sped up insanely as panic overwhelmed her.
The night breeze shook the branches and she lost any chance to hear anything. The coolness just made her shiver.
She stood still for a moment, hoping somehow that he was gone, and yet unable to believe it. It took her a while to realize that the tree was slowly tilting in a worrying way. She only understood what was going on when the crack of the relentlessly uprooted trunk resounded. She was flung forward and she couldn't help a scream as she lost her balance.
She tried to ascent in the air to avoid being dragged down by the falling tree but the branches and leaves prevented her from doing so and her body was eventually shoved to the ground.
She was still able to somehow soften the shock as she landed flat on her stomach. Regardless of the pain, she immediately struggled to her feet. She fought frantically her way out of the dense foliage and as soon as she could she sprinted away.
His voice boomed at once behind her. "Running is of no use! Stay here!"
She ignored the threatening command and kept running, but in a split second, a hand grabbed the back of her head and pushed her forward to the ground. Her face was forcefully pressed into the mud. She flailed to loosen the relentless grip on her skull, but she could feel his fury and she knew she wasn't up to his strength.
As she was getting less and less air, fear eventually took hold of her. She became aware that she was going to die out of suffocation if he kept going on for too long.
Eighteen often told her that her fearlessness would cause her downfall one day and at that minute the words sounded awfully real in Videl's mind.
He let go though. He just allowed her to lift her head to spit mud and inhale a deep breath.
"Where's the baby?" he growled.
"What baby?" she stammered in a murmur.
Fingers tightened around her head and she was sure that he was now hellbent on having her skull blow up.
"Stop! I don't have any baby!" she yelled.
He seemed to calm down. Releasing her head, he caught her by the neck to hoist her up to her feet. She was trembling and as she was wiping the mud smearing her face, she turned to him to give him a look. She had guessed well when she had felt his aura chasing them. She had dealt with him before and she knew a bit about him. Eighteen often reminded how important it was to know their enemies.
This one was the eldest son of Son Goku and therefore, quite dreadful. She had done well to separate from Goten.
"Tonight, you did the most stupid thing in your entire pathetic life," he claimed, glaring daggers at her.
She flinched when she felt his energy flare up until he turned super. A lump formed in her throat at the sight.
"Where's the baby?" he asked again in a threatening tone.
She raised her hands in an innocent stance. "I don't know what you're talking about!" she shrieked. "Can't you see I don't have any baby?"
He scanned the area with a worried frown.
"You know she won't survive if you hid her in the woods. Tell me where she is," he grunted.
"I don't know," Videl mumbled sheepishly.
He took a deep annoyed sigh and the next thing Videl felt was an excruciating pain before she was knocked out.
When she woke up, her muscles were in agony, especially her swollen neck. Wary of the pain, she slowly sat up with caution. She figured that one of her wrists was clasped in a handcuff connected to a wall by a chain. She instinctively pulled it to gauge the freedom she had been granted.
Then, glancing around, she caught sight of Gohan a few steps away from her. He was standing and towering over her with crossed arms. As she met his disapproving glare, she instantly backed away, expecting him to hit her again but he remained still. Beside him, a woman was sitting in a chair. Videl immediately recognized Bulma Brief. She had never met her in flesh but she had seen many pictures of her.
Videl's stomach twitched and she frowned.
"I am-" Bulma began in a soft voice.
"I know who you are," Videl cut off dryly.
"Where's my baby?" Bulma asked, all kindness in her voice gone.
"I don't know. You're the one to rule this planet."
Bulma sighed. Videl could say that she had been crying a lot. Her hollow cheeks, her ringed bloodshot eyes, and what Videl and Goten had done left no doubt about it.
"Why are you doing this? She's just a baby," Bulma resumed.
"She would be just a baby if her father and you hadn't done everything you've done," Videl spat.
Gohan cringed in anger but Bulma put her hand on his arm to calm him down. Videl bit her lips and cursed herself for her hot temper. She was talking too much.
"It's okay, Gohan" Bulma hissed.
Videl sensed the Saiyan's rage and she couldn't help but pull back again and press her back against the wall.
"Why do you take our children?" Bulma asked.
Videl lowered her head. She had to stop staring at the tearful mother for Bulma Briefs had obviously decided to play it emotional.
"She's just a month old. She needs her mother, don't you think?" Bulma tried again, "You certainly will be a mother of your own one day-"
"I don't know!" Videl yelled in frustration. "I don't know where your brat is! I know nothing!"
Bulma frowned and concluded in a suddenly cold voice. "Well, maybe her father will find a better way to have you talk."
Videl swallowed hard and looked up in disbelief. Bulma was already standing up with a knowing glance at Gohan.
