Prologue

Ocean-blue eyes looked out to the setting sun in the distance. The orange glow spread across the horizon like a watercolor canvas, letting the warm hues spread out across the treeline. She was quiet as she watched the burning light slowly fade away. Long raven hair, nearly reaching the back of her knees in length, swayed delicately behind her in the evening breeze, carrying her scent of rain and gardenia along with it.

After having this habit for nearly five hundred years now, one would figure she would've grown out of it by now, but no. Just like every other evening before, she continued to resume this ritual. She did it purely out of instinct, out of reflex. Even if she had other things to do, she'd stop everything if only to enjoy a few minutes out at the cusp of darkness just to savor the sun dipping down and the stars coming out to paint the darkened sky with their softer light.

A loving, cool air of lunar light slowly followed the fading amber glows of the sun as the moon took its perch in the sky at last.

Finally, with a quiet sigh, she lowered her head and let her eyes slip closed at last. She felt a familiar aura approaching from behind, and she turned without hesitation.

"Come on in before it gets too cold out here, Kagome." Her mother's caring voice carried over the sounds of nighttime, and Kagome was helpless to keep her smile from appearing on her face.

Her lips curled in a delicate smile as she finally let her eyes open again. When she did, her blue met the warm brown of her mother's. "... Right," Kagome whispered softly before she fell into step behind the older woman. Together, they walked into the shrine.

After so long, it felt odd to her. She slowly went through her bedroom, refreshing herself with the contents present. Nothing had been altered from her memory, right down to the books still resting on the surface of her desk.

She felt silly for expecting some sort of difference. It'd only been a few weeks to her family, despite the five hundred years that had gone by for her. She knew she'd taken her mother by surprise when she suddenly showed back up by coming up the shrine steps and dressed in clothing completely different than what she'd left in- let alone what she owned.

She'd been understanding as she explained everything that had happened, including her condition she had no escape from. There were parts she left untold, but she knew, one day, that she'd eventually tell her mother.

As that thought ran through her mind, Kagome turned to eye her bedside table. A single photo recently fixed into a frame previously empty brought a smile to her face.

Kagome changed into her sleepwear before flicking her main light off. She walked over to her bed and pulled the pink blankets back as she reached to pull the string of her lamp on the bedside table. A small source of light filled the corner of her room, and she let her hand drift down to move the framed photo a bit so it faced her.

Memories like a movie danced to life behind her eyes, and her heart both burned with sadness and soared with joy.

Bucky…

It was aged, and time had started to do it in, but she didn't let that disparage her any. So, with a small smile on her face, she gave the photo one last look before she reached for the book she kept beside it.

She leaned back against the headboard of her bed, her pillows braced behind her, as she opened it to the page she'd left off on.

What was she supposed to do now? The well was sealed, and she had no other way to get home besides…

A shiver of unease raced down her spine at the thought of having to endure five hundred years of history just to be reunited with her rightful time. How was she supposed to handle this?

She knew that Naraku's wish on the jewel wasn't the worst thing to happen, but to her, it was still awful all the same. Being immortal sounded so horrible, and she didn't want to think of what these next centuries would have in store for her.

"You're strong, Kagome, you can get through this." Sango's encouraging voice brought a smile to her face, and the ravenette slowly nodded her head as she turned to face the brunette.

"I… Right," Kagome said after a moment's pause. "I just… It's not gonna be easy…"

"No, it won't," Sango responded, confirming Kagome's statement. "But you'll be okay. You adapted to hunting demons, and you can adapt to anything that's ahead of you."

Kagome felt her smile fade some, and she looked away. "I guess I'll see about that one…"

000

Despite knowing it'd happen someday, that did nothing to ease the pain she felt away. Her two human companions had succumbed to death's embrace, and, despite knowing their lives had been long and happy, it still hurt so much.

"I don't think there's a reason to stay here, anymore," Kagome said as she slowly rose from her knees. At her statement, Inuyasha felt his ears twitch as he looked towards her.

"You sure?" he asked, his tone soft. "We can stay as long as you need, Kagome."

She smiled at his comforting tone, and she nodded as she looked up at him. "Yes," she said softly. "I'm ready."

Sango and Miroku had been buried beside the Goshinboku tree. One day, she'd find her way back to their resting place, and she knew that was only a matter of time now.

Shippo jumped into her arms and pressed his face against her chest as he worked on drying his tears, and Kirara leaped up onto her shoulder, nuzzling into her neck with a low mew.

"Right…" Inuyasha nodded, a smile slowly appearing on his face. It was small, yet comforting all the same. "We'll come back here one day."

Kagome returned his smile with her own, and she reached to take his hand in one of her own. She left with her demon companions, not looking back.

The sun peeking in through her curtains slowly pulled her from her sleep. Kagome sat up and rubbed the sleep from her eyes as she glanced around her room. The moments of her dreams came racing back, and a soft sigh fell from her lips.

"Kagome! You have a visitor!"

Her mother's voice coming from the staircase stole her attention, and Kagome was able to recognize who had shown up by aura alone. "Sesshoumaru…?" With a confused whisper, Kagome pushed herself out of bed and hurried to change out of her pajamas.

As she tried to figure out what brought him to the shrine, she finally pieced it together upon glancing at her wall calendar. The date was marked, but she had forgotten still. She shook her head and chided herself as she made sure she had everything already packed and ready to do.

"I can't believe I forgot about going to New York today…" Kagome hissed at herself, shaking her head again and scolding herself.

At least she'd remembered to pack ahead of time...

C.R: Short, I know, but the next chapters will get longer.

There will be flashbacks to the Feudal Era, and to Kagome's life throughout the five centuries she's gone through. Though, most important, flashbacks that show her and Bucky together.

Kagome has a sibling-like relationship with Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru in this.

That's it for now! Thank you all for reading, and I hope you enjoyed! Hopefully I caught all the errors before posting, but if not sorry.
