Heya! So... new writer here! Just finished watching Godzilla vs Kong, and I loved it so much, it inspired me to finally write fanfiction on Legendary's Monsterverse. And of course it had to be about the King and Queen of the Monsters!
Just to clarify, this fic does take place after KOTM but before GvK. Oh, and the end of this fic will explain why- super minor spoiler for GvK- Mothra isn't in the new movie.
This fic will also be a mini prequel series to a main series I have planned for the future. So, stay tuned, I guess!
Anyway, hope you all enjoy. See ya!
Ch1: Reunited
"...Mosura."
The King's voice was quiet, even gentle to some degree, as surprising as that was. But he had to be, taking every precaution not to move too quickly nor too harshly within the confines of the cave he slept within. Many thoughts fluttered within his mind: joy yet sadness, excitement yet guilt. He cursed his inner turmoil for heightening his worry rather than keeping him at peace- something she had always advised and reminded him to be more of whenever they were together. But there was one unshakeable feeling within the cluster of emotions that he could not ignore:
He was simply lonely.
His battle with The Golden One had left him to roam the earth alone and empty- and after waiting for so long to spend a moment with her again, only to lose her because of his own weaknesses. Though his new home, while decently spacious given the King's size, was a luxury, there wasn't much else point to it if he had no-one to share it with like in the past. He missed the times they would spend together. They weren't frequent, nor would they last long, but it was those simple factors that allowed them to cherish each others company even more. To strengthen their bonds together- a bond that had resisted the test of time, only growing more and more powerful as millions of years had quickly gone by.
The King huffed and shook his great head, clearing him of his thoughts and snapped back into the present. There was no use relieving the past. What was important was the now. And now, he had to stay strong until he could see her again. Of course the loneliness, the sadness and the guilt were eating away at him, but he was the King. He had to maintain the symbol of strength and power he so desperately had fought for. Not one weakness- physical, emotional- not one weakness could be associated with him as to keep his position. He was the King of the Monsters, how could he let his own emotional turmoil better him? Though he may feel it, it should be just that. Kept to himself, never showing any signs of this weakness to the outside world. But suddenly, the King allowed himself a chuckle and granted the world the tiniest of smiles- one of genuine happiness and content.
"Of course, if you were here, I could never hide anything from you". His voice broke ever so slightly as he spoke. An action no one would ever catch him doing in their wildest dreams. "...even if I wanted to".
Finally, allowing his heavy heart to rest, the King once again moved as slowly and as gently as he could, preparing for some much needed rest. And though the memories still hurt, there presence, much like hers, had given him comfort and warmth. His joy soon won over his sadness and his excitement triumphed over his guilt. Even his loneliness was put aside- even for just a moment. Content, his body wrapped around the shining object tightly, pressing it against his impenetrable scales ensuring it was well protected within his grasp. And as the wave of tiredness swept over him, he gave the egg- his Mosura's egg- one final nuzzle before collapsing his head beside it. As the King slept beside the egg, the clashing waves from the ocean surrounding the island became settled and quiet, the only noise accompanying the night were the pin-drops of water falling from the walls of the cave. And for a moment, the egg shone brighter, it's luminosity even brighter than the moon within the darkness.
It had happened so suddenly the Monarch scientists could barely even comprehend what was happening. In all their years they would have never guessed that Godzilla would come to storm one of their bases they had set up on a secluded island far away from any populated area that could disturb them. A place like this, they thought, wouldn't even interest the King in any way, they were so sure of it.
Dead wrong
This was the place he had been searching for; this place was more important to him than anything else right now. He had come for one thing and one thing only, no humans would come before him and his goal. Luckily for him (or luckily for the scientists scrambling around the base), he hadn't any need for drastic measures (he was sure he would be scolded at by her if had done so, although) as the multitudes of tiny humans quickly ushered back into what he could only assume as their main part of their base given how they all took shelter in an albeit smaller-than-usual metallic housing. Surprisingly, it seemed that no weapons were pointed at him (for once), but upon closer inspection Godzilla found there to be absolutely no type of weaponry guarding the base.
Must have learned their lesson, he thought to himself, leaving them be.
He then took this time to scout the area and surroundings to find what he was looking for, his massive form being surprisingly calm and gently as he made landfall on the island, his massive foot digging deep into the warm sand. He surveyed the area quickly, though, as to ensure no valuable time was lost and found that the majority of the island hadn't been touched by the humans creations, which he was (silently) thankful about. That, coupled with the base's smaller size as well as less occupants of humans running it, the King figured the base formed was most likely temporary. However, his mood was swiftly turned unpleasant as he noticed many platforms as well as what he could assume as massive transportation vehicles surrounding and entering the cave in which he had sensed her presence. He simply put two and two together before irritation started to well up within him.
Giving an audible growl of annoyance, as well as slight anger, Godzilla pushed away anything that stood before him and carried on towards the cave (despite their inconvenience, it'd only slow him down should the humans start to perceive him as a threat). He bent down allowing more of his weight to sink into the sand and moved forward, the upper half of his body soon disappearing within the cave, the rest of his body awkwardly too large to fit inside. The Monarch scientists could only watch in pure shock and confusion as Godzilla emerged from the cave with Mothra's egg clamped firmly in his mouth, pulsating a gentle light as it was carried swiftly but carefully away. Some found the site quite bewildering, others found themselves slightly laughing at the peculiar out-of-character display, while most were sent scrambling around the inside of their base to record and document such a strange action the intimidating King of the Monsters was putting on. Almost too quickly, the sense of dread and panic had almost lifted from the workplace (almost, for it was safer to always be on guard when it came to Titans).
Showing a surprising amount of gentleness, Godzilla had finally started to depart from the base, submerging himself into the water with the egg firmly clasped in between his jaw. He knew the limitations of the egg and so was sure not to go too deep into the water. His heart had started to increase in speed, he came for what he was looking for, all that was left was to take her to a place he would guard her, and wait for her arrival.
As quickly and as suddenly as he arrived, Godzilla disappeared across the ocean leaving the humans unsure of what to do. It was a rare instance to feel at ease whenever the King's presence was realised. And yet, to see such a human emotion of care come him, the Monarch scientists were left still and quiet; unsure yet strangely at ease upon seeing what had just transpired. Obviously they had contacted Headquarters of his sudden appearance as well as his taking of the egg they had been working so hard to remove from the cave. But not one person could look away at Godzilla's form gradually decreasing in size as he moved further away, daring not to follow.
She felt the sudden burst of energy flourish through every part of her body. Surrounded by darkness, she clawed away with her many limbs, desperately trying to break free from her confines and see the light of the outside world. She had been through this process several times, the cycle of life and death becoming a blur the longer she had lived. But this cycle had been the quickest one yet, much to her surprise, so it was obvious she wouldn't waste this precious opportunity the world had given her and hatch as quickly as possible, all so she could see him. She had never felt much sadness whenever she died. Pain and guilt maybe, but never much sadness, for she always knew she would return again. But her latest death at the claws of The Golden One had left her despairing over the fact that she couldn't have spent much time with her King. After thousands of years spent apart, she had finally the chance to reunite with him, only for her to end up saying her goodbye's before she could properly even say her greetings.
It hurt her. So she had promised that, in her next life, she would go straight to him. She couldn't afford to waste anymore time.
Finally, she was able to break free, the shell of her egg opening up as she pried away with her claws and beak, and held her small head high. Despite her urgency, she still took her chance to enjoy the feeling of being able to stretch out of her egg and take in her surroundings. Not a moment too soon, she breathed her first breath of the open air.
She had been reborn, and she needed to be with him.
But a quick scan of the area had her confused and made her a little bit anxious. This wasn't where she had laid her egg. Had the humans not learnt their lesson? Had they still wanted to dwell past her personal boundaries in an attempt to capture her in one of their facilities again? Though she had taken quite a liking to humanity, and vowed to protect all forms of life, it couldn't be helped that she had felt a twinge of disappointment at certain groups of humanity given their attempts to use the power of the Titan's for their own need and shift the balance in nature- a balance the King always tried so hard to maintain. But the quiet night sky, calm waters and lack of much life, beside from her, calmed her nerves as she realised that the island was seemingly free of humans.
But this calmness wouldn't last, as a familiar gruff breath from behind her sparked her heart to beat faster, realising who it may be. She finally allowed her long body to exit her egg fully, giving her enough space to turn around and see who had been silently watching her from behind. It couldn't be…
"Heya, Mosu."
Mothra turned around to see the King slumped over on his side, the gentle raising and lowering of his chest signalling the sign of life as well as heightened excitement and emotion. And though his eye's were one of tiredness, she could clearly see the sparks of joy and relief shining within the gold.
Slowly she made her way to his head, unsure if the world had actually granted good fortune in favour of her, or if this was something she was dreaming up inside her egg, still waiting to hatch. (Heaven knows she had before).
"...Goji?"
Her quite voice was like a soft song to him. One that he hadn't heard in so long, yet cherished for all eternity. Truly the voice of a Goddess, and one with thousand of years of emotion bottled up inside. Slowly, he lent closer to her, blueish tints shining from both of them, enlightening the darkness of the cave.
"Guess I beat you to it", the King chuckled, staring deep into her wide, sapphire eye's.
Almost instantly, Mothra touched her head upon his, and nuzzled against the snout of her king, his scales rubbing against her small head as he returned her gesture. A combined laughter and sighs of relief filling the cave they embraced in. At last, they were together again.
"Although I wanted nothing more to see you as soon as possible", Mothra spoke, her head still resting on his and her voice smooth and quiet, "a part of me wished you could have seen me after I had emerged from a cocoon rather than an egg".
Seeing her clear, embarrassed smile on her face, the King could only smile even wider. He curled around his precious friend, his mighty tail surrounding her, keeping his head against hers at all times, occasionally nuzzling the small larvae.
"How come? You look cute." Godzilla replied simply, his tiredness replaced with a rare occurrence of playfulness.
The King got the reaction he was looking for, witnessing how the calm blue light emitting from her, spike a small pink and retaining the slight change in colour. Her face soon moulded into that of surprise and furthered embarrassment.
"I don't think cute would be the word choice best associated with this form", Mothra hastily replied, slowly backing away from Godzilla's head and staring him face-to-face, trying to stop the pink glow from emitting any further as the King chuckled softly.
Despite her embarrassment (and slight annoyance), she could only help but smile back at her King. Nothing had changed between them, no matter how long they had spent apart from each other and she was extremely grateful for that. But, as the initial excitement died down, she noticed how the smile Godzilla had shown had started to die down with it. And, within his eyes, she could see pain and worry.
"What's bothering you, my King?", she said softly making sure his eyes were staring right back into hers.
Godzilla hesitated to say anything, at first, but lost to those commanding and caring eye's of hers. He gave in.
"How long do you think you will be here with me, this time?", Godzilla replied quietly. It was pointless to try and hold anything back from her, a millennia spent together taught him that.
She could instantly tell what he had meant. Unfortunately, try as she might, she couldn't control when she could birth from her egg. All she knew was that, the world would choose when. And when it did, it would be for a reason- one that would usually end with her death. So, why had she been chosen to be birthed now? Surely the world couldn't be thrown into disarray so soon. After all, it had only been half a year since The Golden One had threatened to destroy the natural order.
"There's always a reason why you must hatch", Godzilla said, a growing anger swelling up inside of him, "and no matter how strong I am, I always end up losing you. I can't let that happen again!"
His voice was growing louder and louder, the pain within it becoming more and more noticeable. But Mothra did not sway, even she was starting to feel the pain of not being able to devote more time to peacefully stay with him at his side.
"It won't." She said firmly, she wouldn't falter even when confronted with his anger. For she could tell that this anger wasn't devoted to her, or even the world, but rather himself. So all she was focused on, was to comfort his aching heart.
"I may not know what the future entails for me- for us", she stated, "but I do know that I could never be lost from you."
She didn't need to say much else, by the way the King's breathing steadied and his eye's calmed down, she knew she had gotten her point across. Each word she said was with truth and meaning. Question her would be blasphemous.
"And", she began, a warm smile growing on her face, "perhaps I rebirthed so soon because, now, I can spend more time at your side. And we can finally be a peace with the world. You trust my judgement, do you not?"
The King, sighing a content and tired breath, responded by wrapping his arms around her small figure, and rested her head against the crook of his neck. Purring gently, Mothra closed her eye's as she basked against his warmth, allowing the wave of sleep to take over, staying firmly by his side. And as she got comfortable within his body, the King finally was at peace- the loneliness disappearing with every second he cradled her against him as he rested his head atop hers, the blue lights emitted from both of them blending with each other, a display of true partnership and comfort.
"Always."
