CHAPTER ONE: How to Irritate a Tom on Your 1st Try (While Simultaneously Peeking His Curiosity)
-.-.-.-
He felt the awakening once more as strong magic brushed against his own and he breathed it into his space, his eyes flashing open briefly with a crimson light before fading back to the black and white of his surroundings.
Then there was the wait, the wait made him wish he had the energy to hurl a couple of curses but he hadn't been awakened in many years.
At last it came, the vibration in the air as words started to carve themselves out in golden light above his head. They weren't written in English but instead his magic thrummed in excitement as he saw the elegant swirls of Parselscript even as his brows furrowed at the strange words.
~Life with the name Buttercup Humperdink is tiring. On the brightside I like to imagine that the original owner of this diary, with a strong name that's not too strange but just the right amount of mysterious, was super duper hot.~
Tom stared at the name in befuddlement. It was true that many witches and wizards had strange names but never had he heard of one quite like hers. It had to be a fake name. Then there was the question why she would write a fake name in the diary, unless she already had suspicions about it.
He glanced back up to find the writing had disappeared to accommodate more.
~I fear my family is wholly unprepared for my sorting. I have tried to warn them that I won't be Gryffindor, in fact I'm quite positive I'll be a Slytherin. I've tried to ease them into this idea for years, but I fear it will still come as a shock. I suppose I could be placed in the other houses…~
A fellow Slytherin-to-be who wrote in Parselscript that lived in a home of Gryffindors, how strange.
~Hufflepuff, I am indeed loyal. However, I might scare others in that house. I can be a bit...intense sometimes.~
His curiosity peaked further.
~Ravenclaw is nice but I think I would be too tempted to make them into my own horde of mad scientists. I could even see Ravenclaw tower exploding in the process. Gryffindor is not even an option; no matter if some of my family are there or not. I fear I would create riots, incite all sort of chaos within the ranks...no its safer for everyone if I'm sorted into Slytherin.~
It was at this point that Tom at last found he had enough energy to reply back. ~~ How is it that you can write in Parselscript?~~
{Perspective Shift}
A shiver went down a spine. Lips quirked. Hands shook and fingers quivered.
Ginerva (fondly called Ginny or Gin by her older brothers) Weasley looked at Tom Marvolo Riddle's diary in anticipation as at last her commentary prompted a response.
A rumbling growl came from her lap and she absently stroked her familiar's scaled neck. Her eyes not straying from the journal. A long ridged nose nudged her stomach and so she sighed and scratched along the creature's flared ridge. A pleased trill came from the beast and a giggle came from the girl in turn.
She picked up her quill once more.
~Hello! You must be Tom.~
She paused once more knowing her unanswered question would test the entity's patience, but she smiled as she leaned to the side and got some of the jerky snacks she'd gotten for her familiar.
Careful of the hundreds of needle sharp teeth she hung the snack above the creature's head, "Tyron, here's your treat."
His narrow jaws opened. His teeth made a sharp clacking sound as his jaw shut as soon as the meat was dropped. He lept from her lap, soaring slightly down to the ground from her perch on her alcove platform bed.
Ginny winced and rubbed her thighs where he'd dug in a little too deep when he was launching off. Through their bond she felt him perk up and give a little worried emotion back.
"Just be more careful next time. Not all of us are covered in scales and feathers, Tyron."
He preened from his spot on the ground his sunset orange fringe on his nose flaring.
Feeling lighter and more assured the girl brought her attention back to the task at hand, irritating a fifty year old horcrux.
~~You didn't answer my question.~~
With a smirk she took up her quill and wrote back, ~No I suppose I didn't. It's a bit of a secret only known by a select few, however I am a polyglot.~
She could feel his confusion even without the words that followed.
~~That is not how being a polyglot works.~~
The top of her quill tickled her lips as she bent over the diary to write once more. ~The only ones who are aware of the talent are my two older brothers, and now I suppose you. They believe I have some sort of early onset magical inheritance.~
There was a pause and she knew he was considering the possibilities. The diary's magic thrummed beneath her but she didn't allow its magic to reach her own. She wouldn't give him an inch, she would only give him clues to a puzzle she wished him to solve.
~~What other languages have you been able to communicate in?~~
She smiled. He'd failed in searching out her power, he was not strong enough.
~I'm not sure the number. I know I have some sort of Beast-speech abilities.~
She had also tried speaking Egyptian with her brother Bill. He was excited to find she wasn't just fluent in the modern Egyptian but the ancient versions as well and she could read hieroglyphs. In fact that was what spurred on her last minute trip to Egypt before the school year began with her two eldest brothers.
She had just finished the bulk of her other school shopping, the canon events happened according to schedule with Lord Malfoy slipping the diary in her caldron. Ginny had to heavily restrain herself from cackling maniacally when it happened, she had been so tempted to mention about the wondrous diary she found and how she planned to write about all her girlish feelings in it. However, she decided last minute being silent would be best but that didn't stop her from grinning rather foolishly which did lead the twins to looking at her suspiciously especially when their shopping trip was cut short and their mother had told her they would have to come back later for her wand.
However that night Charlie and Bill swept her away to Egypt stating they had promised her one big adventure before going to Hogwarts. Their mother was wary of her getting a wand from anywhere else but Ollivanders but Bill promised that he wouldn't put his littlest sibling in any danger.
Bill was excited because he had been telling Ginny about a recent discovery in his letters but how he was unable to decode the curse due to several inscriptions written in Archaic Egyptian. Curious Ginny asked what they were and he gave them to her on separate scraps of paper to ensure the curse couldn't be put upon her. Oddly though when she was looking at them it was as if they were pieces to a puzzle she had never seen before but yet knew how to solve immediately. She wrote back the translations and her brother was ecstatic.
Of course she felt as if she were cheating. Her brothers thought it was some sort of creature inheritance, but she knew it wasn't. Well...not really. But how do you tell your brothers that your alien 'case worker' gave you the option of a 'gift' when you decided to be born into this dimension and you chose to be a polyglot.
