This is the offering to Kadam Week 2015 prompt 7: Truth or Dare
When Kurt accepted to join the Adam's Apples he had no real idea of what he signed up for, not about how the group was like...
If Kurt thought New Directions was a weird group of people to hang out with, he had a wonderful surprise.
Once he was officially one of the Apples, he discovered that one thing everyone has in common was quirks.
Behind Mei's cute lolita dresses were hidden the sharpest tongue Kurt had ever met, including his own.
Paul was eerily reminding Kurt of Brittany, not in the same living in his own world way, but the same kind of innocence able to throw the best of shades. Delivering them in a way that no one could actually take offence, always with a kind smile on his face.
And Adam, Adam too was one of the most deceptive people among the whole group. Always calm, always willing to see the best in everyone, and give everyone a chance. While at the same time able to deliver reprimands and dressing down without ever raising his voice or lose his impeccable manners. He was strong in such a gentle and cool way that it took people by surprise.
All in all the whole group had that same appearance will tell you one thing, but the reality was a different thing and people should be afraid, very afraid... vibe... Which as far as everyone else in the group was ready to point out made Kurt fit as one of them to a T.
Knowing all that, Kurt should have known that a party with this group would result in something spectacular... Whether in a disastrous or wonderful way was yet to be determined...
Point was Kurt had managed to invite Adam for a date soon after joining the Apples.
And they had been tentatively dating for a couple of weeks now.
Valentine's day was quickly approaching, and they had not yet solidified anything...
So all in all he should have expected something to happen. If nothing else, the Apples were a close knitted group, a fact Kurt was learning to enjoy.
When everyone grouped at Adam's place because he was the only one without flatmates, Kurt thought nothing of it.
When Adam suggested innocently to just make their way there after class, so they could spend some time together before the other arrived.
And Kurt was all for it, they actually had a great time, he was even allowed to help despite being a guest...
When JJ and Matt arrived with what looked like a bona fida bar, Kurt was a little more on guard and shared that he was not too fond of drinking but didn't elaborate.
On the brighter side, no one pressured him to drink, even if he was regularly offered alternatively a drink, a beer, or even just a shot to perk up his mock-tail, or his diet coke.
It was about a couple of hours into the evening that Gwen came up with a brilliant idea... "How about we play truth or dare? That way our favourite freshie has a chance to learn something about us and vice versa."
The glints in her eyes should have been scary, even more, when Paul came up with an even more innocent and inconspicuous "In that case I propose to make it our version of truth or dare..."
The round of nods had the misleading effect of actually relaxing Kurt into thinking that it wouldn't be that bad… Which all in all at the very end it really wasn't.
They all sat in a circle, and after everyone raising their bottles it was Maya who finished her beer and spun it in the middle of their circle.
Kurt raised an eyebrow but kept quiet, he was sure he heard correctly and that they were doing a game of truth or dare and not spin the bottle.
But it was also mentioned the fact it was going to be the group's own spin on it so maybe that was it.
As they watched, the bottle stopped and landed on JJ who looked like he won the lottery and grinned like a madman before he turned to Kurt "Well well well mine are the honours, here's the question, Kurt, my man we'll start you easy and work our way up… Tell me the two most embarrassing stories you have about drinking one about what you did and one about what you saw that put you enough off alcohol that you now won't take anything that could be considered drinking even while you're in a safe place with friends..."
Kurt looked taken aback "I thought it was truth or dare don't I get the choice?"
Maya grinned up "Of course but the rules are meant to be fair, so first we state what would be the round's question, then the one who received the question first says whether they want to answer with the truth, or if they want to take a dare instead."
Mei continued "and there can't be a dare asking to answer the same question."
Matt quipped the next rule "Once a question has been asked variation of the same are not accepted."
Leon continued the list "Once everyone answered the first who got to answer will spin the bottle and get who's the one who will have to answer first and pose their question on the next turn."
Adam the ever kind one finished the explanation "If someone really in a tight spot and neither the question or the dare is palatable they can buy their way out three times fine for doing so one buck the first buyout, two the second and three for the third, if anyone reaches the third buyout the game stops. All the money collect will get to the group's emergency jar."
Paule spoke then "So Kurt what will it be truth or dare?"
Kurt looked around and shrugged "I'll take truth it's not really a matter of big things but many smaller ones, those though I guess are the first two that happened and that left me with my current disposition"
Kurt noticed everyone was curiously waiting for him to continue "The one time I got introduced to alcohol it was in high school, in my sophomore year, we had this high school dropout who was returning to get her diploma and to help our glee club compete. She had to win us over when we weren't convinced to have a thirty something woman be on stage with us for competitions. I remember she offered me this stack of really vintage health magazines with bodybuilders before they started to become all super pumped ken dolls.."
Mei whistle in appreciation "Oh please tell me that you weren't so young and naive that you disposed of such gold..."
Kurt chuckled blushing furiously "To be perfectly honest I'm not sure what happened to those, we moved to a different house almost a year after I got them. I did put them in a box but I don't know if I even have opened by the time I left to come here in New York. Anyway getting back to the story I was quite the recurring target of a group of bullies at school at it was wearing me down, so she offered me what she called liquid courage... Long story short I thew up on our germophobic ocd counsellor's shoes calling her Bambi"
Matt chuckled softly "Oh boy how did the parents react?"
Kurt looked on the floor and shrugged "She never told my dad about it, she took me to the ER and made me promise of not drinking until at least I was out of high school in exchange for her silence."
Gwen nodded and offered a smile, "Well that explains tonight, okkie no pressure, but seriously if you want to try it again I can promise you no one in this room would let you go that far or allow you to be in danger in any way, you'll be safe with us.."
Kurt smiled gratefully truly believing her words "I'll remember that"
JJ pouted and said playfully "Damn man you are killing my buzz I was open for fun kind of embarrassment… Please tell me you saw good funny shit happen to your friends back home please "
Kurt slumped and shook his head "Sorry I haven't, not really. The most hilarious story I have, which didn't felt that way at the time, is about my ex, in a time before we got together but after I told him I had feelings for him. And who I do want to precise is as queer as a three dollars bill, and who had been basically the only other out gay I met back home."
Kurt used his fingers and hands to make his point, growing more confident and comfortable with all the people in the room, enough to bring back habits that had been smothered back in Lima.
"He got drunk sang with Rachel and ended their duet kissing her, next thing we all know he's claiming he maybe was confused and no longer gay but bi. Because they were so compatible together, and while hammered it felt good to kiss her. Experience that upon sobering up didn't stand the doubts and he did confirm he was actually gay..."
Kurt was the first one snorting, but it was a rather collective thing shared by others. Mathias who usually looked so aloof sniped "Gosh man that sucks and not even in a good way, I'm all for questioning but doing so while hammered it's the most stupid thing ever..."
Leon pondered aloud almost lost into his head "Woah that explain so much…" Then he turned to Kurt with a brilliant smile "Bright side you're here with us, the ex Is just the ex and we are all pretty secure in who we are by now "
Everyone giggled at Leon's words then Erika asked softly "Please tell me the guy got his act together, because if he comes around I won't be able to hold back and bitch slap him until I straighten him up myself"
Kurt offered a tight smile and shrugged, "Let's just say I don't have a single fond memory in which he was around drinks... He has a tendency of making bad decisions when drunk... And let's leave it at that, he's back in Lima and we're here so that's how things are"
Adam had kept his eye trained on Kurt, he noticed how he had stiffened and didn't look anywhere.
When the circle of answers reached Adam he grinned still amused by the tales told "Well truth time, the first time me and my pals went to the pub we had just hit eighteen, which is the age of drinking back home, and we were so hyper about the whole experience, that we took a meter of beer each, not realising we would have to take it to our table on our own... I didn't even manage to reach halfway there, let's just say my clothes got more of that beer than I could drink"
That provoked another round of laughters, and Adam continued "While the dumbest thing I saw was a friend of mine getting so pissed that he thought it was a bright idea go bother the cows in his family farm, because milk solved everything. And what was better than getting fresh milk directly from the source? It turned out that he had not a clue how to get milk from them even from sober, but in his drunken stupor thought how difficult it could be? He ended up bitch slapped by the cow's tail, we all laughed so hard we woke up the whole household and got the scolding of a lifetime like naughty toddlers"
Kurt chuckled as well. Despite the rocky start the rest of the game was continued a lot better, Kurt had taken some dare on questions he really really didn't want to even think about let alone dare to answer like "would you rather drink until you lose your mind or sleep through all the stage combat majors in a single night?"
Another equally disturbing question Kurt happily skipped was "If you couldn't get away from getting a couch call would you rather it be Madam T or Mrs Hemmirton for you fab gays, or between Dean Keller and Mr Hopper for our lovely lesbians and threesome between the Madam T and Dean K vs Mr and Mrs H for those of us who do not swing either way or simply don't mind any?"
When Adam called out the last round of the game, since it was getting well into the night.
For the last question Adam was the one chosen to go first, the question was a tame one compared to all the others that had escalated into disturbingly weirder and weirder as the night progressed…
But it was the one question that, had Kurt been drinking, it would have sobered him up instantly… Because he was rather invested in hearing the answer himself, hoping that Adam would choose to go with truth...
Probably unsurprisingly Paul was the one asking "So for Valentine day, will you ask out the person you're interested in or are you going to mope and bake all day long?"
Adam shot a warning look to their smirking friends and answered looking at Kurt "Taking the last truth of the game, I don't plan to do any asking. I hope the one I'm interested in knows I don't want to pressure him into anything he's not ready for. Me asking him out for Valentine day could put him on the spot, and worse it might send the wrong message that I'm not happy to take our time and to go at our own pace."
Kurt felt all the eyes on him, his heart swelled when Adam threw the rest of the group unimpressed glares, his lips pressed tightly from refrain to tell the guys off, allowing Kurt to deal with their friends however he pleases.
But Kurt didn't really feel like answering under such scrutiny, so he shook his head and instead said with a cheeky grin "Call your dare, my plans are not up for public discussion nor part of your entertainment tonight."
Paul pouted like did some of the others, and called in reply "Fiiine party popper I dare you to stay after we've all left and discuss your plans privately then…"
Kurt grin widened and sent a quick glance at Adam noticing the tension easing at his words "I'll gladly do that." Which provoked pleased smiles all around and probably unsurprisingly it became the quickest round so far.
Before one could have reasonably thought, everyone was leaving sending kisses and saying their goodbyes, leaving Kurt and Adam alone once more.
Kurt started helping cleaning up any traces of the party. As they worked humming softly to the radio that had been playing as very low background noise the whole evening Kurt said softly "I have been invited back to Lima for my high school glee club's director's wedding"
Adam smiled but his eyes had become sad as he nodded "I see, you must be happy for a chance to go back home"
Kurt bit his lips and stopped looking at Adam "I'm not sure about going, Lima is not home I never belonged there, my family is my home… And yes there're days I miss my dad, Carole and Finn. But I am not sure I could give up New York and the life I am building here…"
Adam stopped his moving around and looked at Kurt waiting calmly, not pressuring Kurt to add more than what he felt like sharing.
Kurt took a deep breath and continued "Sometimes thoughts or mentions of Blaine still hurt and take me by surprise. But I like you very much, I like how you are with me and how that doesn't change depending on who we have around us. I am not sure if I am ready to have a boyfriend, but I'd love the chance to see where we could go…"
Adam stood in front of Kurt, holding his own hand out in silent offer "We can go wherever you want, at whatever pace you feel comfortable with, and if ever or when our wishes and hopes match, then we can work out together where to go from that point on."
Kurt took the offered hand with his and came closer, standing right inside Adam's personal space "What I wanted to say, ask really, was… Is there any chance I might have a better offer than going back to the place I escaped?"
Adam looked into Kurt's eyes and said with a mischievous smile and a gleam in his eyes "We could hide in here, our phone off and bake all weekend. And on monday let our friends believe that all that happened during the weekend was baking and moping…"
Kurt giggled amused "Sounds like we'll have a fun date."
