Chapter 1: Thoughts

"Who was it this time?"
Eight-year-old Wander didn't have to stand on heels like the other Star Nomad boys his age, he was one of the tallest Star Nomad children that was eight at the orphanage, so he didn't have to worry having any problems about seeing over the rows of the children that stood in front of them. Sometimes, he was mistaken as a 10-year-old, but then the orphanage employees who have been here just as long as Wander has would know that Wander was a 2303 kid, not a 2301 kid.
"Marsha and Quinton King, this rich couple came in and they're adopting them." Wander whispered so none of the adults heard. Wander was taught for three years now since he learned to read at five to not talk about other kids being adopted, they save that for recess, shower time, T.V time, or even bedtime.
Wander had been adopted a couple of times, not a lot, but a couple of times. Three times before he was five and two times after he turned five. The last one was a year ago and only lasted nine months up to Christmas of 2310 and ever since then, he's never been adopted. Marsha and Quinton came out with big smiles while holding hands with their new parents. And as quick as they left Ms. Gill's office, they were out of New Connections Orphan Home, possibly forever.
"Why can that be me?" The boy who asked Wander what was happening, Gunnar Pace pouted. "It's not fair!"
One of the adults came to take Gunnar back to the bedroom for the boys who were five through seven-years-old. New Connections Oprhan Home had five floors and on each floor, they had seperate bedrooms for both boys and girls of age groups. Floor one had two bedrooms for newborns to one-year-olds, floor two had two bedrooms for two-years to four-years-old, floor three had five-years to seven-years-old, floor four had eight-years to 10-years-old, and on the last floor had two bedrooms for 11-years to 18-years-old. Wander was sure that Ms. Gill didn't know what to do with the extra space that came with the fifth floor bedrooms, so they were for the boys and girls for the last seven years of their childhood. Gunnar's cries had turned more heartbreaking, Gunnar was a new kid, only being here for a week after his mom passed away, and he just wanted his mom to come back, Gunnar couldn't understand why he had to come to a orphange.
Wander moved up to the fourth floor boy's bedroom and sat down on his bed and grabbed his hat. His hat from what Mr. Lutz had always told him, Wander had been left on the orphanage back doorstep when he was a week old with the hat nearby. And ever since then, the hat was Wander's, and it would always would be. Wander started to think about Gunnar had said, Wander had thought and said that too, multiple times, and right now, he was thinking about it.
Wander knew he was crying halfway into his thoughts. He was thinking once again why he was left on the doorstep after being born only a week ago all those eight years ago. He always wondered what his parents looked like since he didn't know what they actually looked like, but he was sure he got his orange fur from one of them. He wondered if they were nice, he wondered if they had enough money, maybe they didn't and that was why he was left on the doorstep. Either way, Wander couldn't stop the thoughts of his birth parents. He didn't even realize that Mr. Lutz was standing at the doorway.
"Leonard, Jeremiah, Fletcher, Wander, recess boys." Mr. Lutz spoke gently towards the four boys.
Leonard, Jeremiah, and Fletcher stood and walked out while Wander stayed behind. Just one more second, just one more second of crying. Wander told himself. And he took one more second to cry and then came the wiping away the tears. And all through this, Mr. Lutz stayed put, still waiting on the boy.
"Are you comin' Wander?" Mr. Lutz kept the gentleness in his voice from earlier as he spoke to Wander. After one more wipe to his eyes, Wander nodded and stood up to leave.
"Yeah, I'm comin' Mr. Lutz."
