Draco closed the study door behind him and I watched him expectantly. Why did he want to talk to the two of us alone? I glanced over at my wife, she seemed just as puzzled by the sudden need for a confession as I was.
"I don't want to marry Astoria," he said suddenly as he turned around to face us.
"Why not?" Narcissa asked softly. "She is a lovely, respectable Pureblood lady, and this will be good for us. The Greengrass family is very suitable."
"I don't love her, I've, well, fallen in love with someone else."
"Parkinson, perhaps? I saw the two of you became close over the years," I asked, trying to not sound angry at the thought of losing my alliances with the Greengrass family because of something as trivial as a boy with a crush.
He shook his head, reluctant to speak more.
"Speak up then, boy," I hissed at him. This conversation was frustrating me to no end.
"It's Potter," he almost whispered at me. I had to ask him to repeat it twice before I comprehended the depth of this confession.
"You're a queer?" I glared over at Draco, I never raised my son to be anything but a respectable man, and now this. I have never been more horrified in my entire life. I looked over to my wife, I fully expected her to back me up on this, the thought of her letting this go didn't even occur to me.
"I wouldn't say that," Draco said softly, almost inaudibly.
"You wouldn't say that?" I repeated, the blood was pumping through my body at such a rush I felt lightheaded. I sat down in a large armchair I was leaning against. "Then what would you call it?"
"Father, this took me great courage to speak to you about, Harry and I, we…"
"Get out," I said through gritted teeth, cutting off the words that stung like daggers in my heart.
"What?" Draco asked, his face more ashen than I have ever seen it. "You wouldn't kick me out, I am your only son…" It was as if he was daring me to say it. I was used to keeping my temper in check, but this insolence just wouldn't do.
"I no longer have a son," I said loudly, it felt like my voice was ringing in my ears.
I heard Narcissa gasp. "Close your mouth," I snarled at her. "You are not a goldfish, and we didn't raise an heir to be left with this," I added, spitting at the ground by Draco's feet. Draco hadn't moved, and I could feel that I was slowly losing the battle with my temper.
"I said take your things and get out of my house before I throw you out!" My hand was gripping the armchair, and I saw the veins appearing on my hands with the strain.
"Mother, please." Draco turned to Narcissa, but she just shook her head. She didn't have a choice but to, and so did Draco. After a few seconds of silence in which I could only hear my elevated breathing, he left the study, the door closing with a thud behind him.
Narcissa started to cry softly, but I was still trying to calm down enough to try to comfort her.
"Surely you can't be okay with this?" I asked, trying to control my features despite the disappointment pooling inside my stomach. I left a bitter taste in my mouth, somewhat similar to acid reflux; I had never felt this emotion before.
"Nissa," I said, getting up from the chair slowly. "I know this is tough on you, but you know we cannot allow this, our family name…"
"I thought you had grown up after the war," Narcissa said coldly.
Her words felt like a red-hot fist that slammed into my stomach, leaving me breathless. "How dare you!" I exclaimed. "You are supposed to support me."
"And I do, I let you chase out our only son from our home, it doesn't mean I have to like it."
I didn't say or do anything as she, too, turned around on the spot, walked through the room, and left me on my own.
She was most likely joining Draco; Draco who had had so much potential and a bright future. And all he could do with it was throw it away.
All because of Potter.
