Her Hips Don't Lie
Andy Sachs did not like her Boss. Not like that at least. She did not think she was gorgeous, or sexy. Not at all.
It just happened that one morning, during James Holt's preview, she saw Miranda pursing her lips, and she was momentarily speechless, staring at her. It was at that moment that she started overthinking how she really felt about her. No, no, this is not happening, I just didn't get enough sleep last night, she told herself.
Once the preview was over (with catastrophic results, mind you) the assistant waited for Miranda to finish speaking to Nigel, and the moment she was reaching her limousine, Andy asked him, "Why does she have to purse her lips in that sexy way? Who does she think she is?"
Nigel did not know what Andy was expecting him to reply, "What do you mean? That's just the way she expresses her disappointment. Anyway, what did you mean with 'sexy'?"
The brunette panicked, "Oh, I… I meant it as in 'she purses her lips in an annoyingly sexy way' when she could simply just roll her eyes."
Nigel simply shook his head, "Whatever."
A few hours later, at Runway's office, Nigel walked through the hall outside Miranda's office, carrying a folder with the pictures from the latest photoshoot she had asked him for. The Editor-in-Chief was not still back from her latest meeting, but it should not take her much longer, so he decided to come to Andy's desk talk to his friend while waiting, "So, Six, how are you feeling?"
"Uhm… I'm alright? Why do you ask?"
"Oh, nothing, it's just this morning you referred to Miranda as 'sexy' so I thought you may have a fever or maybe there is something you're not telling me."
"No, I said the way she pursed her lips was sexy." Ugh, not this again! "ANNOYINGLY sexy, emphasis on 'annoying', alright? It's not the same at all."
"Sure." he replied, not believing a word.
"Nigel, I don't know what you're implying." she absolutely did, though, and started typing furiously an email she needed to send.
"Whatever did those keys do to you? You're gonna break the keyboard if you continue smashing them."
"There's an urgent email I need to send, so I'm typing quickly, I'm not smashing anything. Nigel, what is the deal with you today?" she was starting to feel upset.
"Alright, alright, I'll stop right now."
"Thank you."
"It's not my business whom you wanna smash after all, if you know what I mean." he added a wink at the end to make sure Andy knew she was not fooling him.
That statement made her hit one of the keys longer than usual, so now the last part of the email said "Sincerelyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy".
"NIGEL, WHAT THE FUCK?"
"What? Come on, try to deny it." He knew he was right and would make his friend confess it. Did she think he was a fool? Bitch, please, he knew most things that happened behind Runway's offices. He would never forget the old days, when both Miranda and he started working there, and during some breaks (not that they had a lot of those) they gossiped every now and then about certain coworkers who had some business going on, and not in the professional way.
"Nigel," she forced a smile, "with all respect, you need to stop making shit up in your mind. You have a lot of imagination, have you ever thought of putting it to good use by writing a novel?" she said, and then started mumbling "Me? Having a crush on Miranda? That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard."
Nigel was obviously hearing everything she was saying under her breath, "And all this nonsense you're telling to yourself is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. But hey, you actually gave me a good idea: I will write a romantic novel based on this crush of yours. Let's see, chapter one will be about your current phase of denial. Chapter two: you may accidentally declare your feelings to the Dragon Lady."
"Oh, fuck off!"
"Have you been possessed by Emily's spirit? I've never seen you this upset before. Where is she anyway?"
"She went to the bathroom now that Miranda is at that meeting."
"Well, she better be back in one second, because she's already here."
"What?" Andy asked before seeing that indeed, her Boss was walking in front of her desk.
"Andrea, I better hear back from Patrick in 15 minutes." she ordered, and then walked towards her office swinging her hips in a more exaggerated way than usual (which did definitely not call Andy's attention).
"Have you seen that, Nigel? Who does she think she is? Shakira?" she scoffed.
Nigel rolled his eyes, "Okay, this is enough. Six, is there anything you wanna tell me?" he deadpanned.
What is going on? I'm going insane today, I don't even know why I'm thinking what I'm thinking or why I'm noticing things I haven't noticed before. Although, I think I may have accidentally stared at her ass longer than usual a couple of times before, but it must be because my eyes are tired and they decided to fix at a point that's lower in sight. Right? But then why did I gawk at her good graces last month when I left the manuscript on her table? Oh, God, she must have noticed! She knows EVERYTHING! No, she can't have possibly noticed, or she would've fired me then, wouldn't she?
"Six, I can hear your mind screaming and I'm starting to worry. I will only ask you this one more time, but I promise I won't bother you anymore if you're still not ready to talk about it: is there anything you wanna tell me?"
She tried to keep her voice down, "No. But uhh… is she single?" To Hell with pretending. My God, this is really bad. But I know I can count on him to keep my secret, and it may be better for my mental health to speak about it with him. He obviously realized my feelings before I did!
Before Nigel could reply with a 'Told you', a deep, silky voice behind them said, "Andrea, I'm still here. FYI: I am single, and my hips don't lie either," she decided to make a pun based on what her assistant had said before to ease her nerves, "You better have the guts to ask me out. That's all." That should do it.
Andy was dumbstruck. Had she heard her correctly? Judging by the way Nigel was looking at her, yes, she had definitely told her she wanted to be pursued, "Yes, Miranda!" she exclaimed. OH MY GOD!
After the silver-haired woman had come into her office, Nigel looked at Andy with a devious smile, "This is fantastic. Now I have something new to tease Emily with. Nice job, Six!" he winked an eye at her.
"Nigel, Nigel, Nigel, I must be dreaming, what are the odds? Somebody pinch me!" she gaped in utter shock. Of course her friend took it literally, "Ouch! Hey, I didn't mean it in the literally sense!"
"Nigel, whenever you deem it appropriate, could you stop bothering my assistant and finally bring me the pictures I requested?" Miranda said in her usual stern but low voice.
"Oopsie!" he chuckled, walking fast towards her office.
Later that day, when Miranda said her usual "Bag, coat," Andy took the chance to inform her she had made a reservation at her Boss' favorite restaurant on Saturday at 13:00 sharp, which earned her a small smile and a brief nod. Pheww. That went well.
Emily frowned at them, but said nothing.
Once her Boss had left, Nigel, who had pretended to be checking some documents, suppressed a smile.
"What was that about?" Emily asked.
"Wouldn't you like to know?" the man replied, trying to sound interesting.
"Wait, you know?"
"Of course I know, dear. But I don't think you're ready for the truth. I don't think you'll ever be, to be honest."
"Whatever. I have more important things to do." she muttered haughtily.
"You mean Serena."
"What?! I am not doing… Look, I don't have time for this. I'm gonna gather my things and leave. It's time. Goodnight."
"Alright. See you on Monday." Nigel chuckled and left the first assistant alone.
N/A: there will be 2 chapters in total, so you know what that means: the next one is the date with Miranda ;)
